Monday Night Football: Jaguars Stun Ravens, 12-7

The Jacksonville Jaguars showed up on Monday Night Football with everyone expecting a bloodbath against the Baltimore Ravens. A bloodbath is what everyone in the country got, but of the Ravens variety. The Jaguars defense completely shutdown and stifled the Ravens offense, allowing only 146 yards on offense. Total. Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco was harassed all game long, being sacked three times and hit a total of six times. For much of the night, Flacco either couldn't hit the broadside of a barn or the Ravens receivers couldn't find a way to get open against the Jaguars secondary.

At half time, the Ravens didn't have a single first down and had just 14 net yards on offense.

Star-divide

Rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert picked up his first victory, but struggled to do much in the passing game against the leagues third ranked pass defense. It was a combination of poor protection at times, dropped balls (including back to back touchdown passes), and the rookie just flat out missing guys. Thankfully for the Jaguars, running back Maurice Jones-Drew was able to grind out 105 yards on 30 carries.

Jaguars kicker Josh Scobee led the way with four field goals, including three from 50+ yards. New punter Nick Harris helped out as well in a game that was all about field position. Harris pinned the Ravens deep multiple times in the game.

Much the target of fan criticism, Rashean Mathis played his best game of the season completely blanketing both Anquan Boldin and rookie Torrey Smith. Early in the game Mathis smothered Boldin and broke up some big plays. Linebackers Daryl Smith and Paul Posluszny flew all over the field and Clint Session made an impact in his limited snaps. Defensive end Jeremy Mincey got to Joe Flacco and harassed him all night, sacking him once.

The defensive line controlled the line of scrimmage, limiting the Ravens rushing attack to just 34 rushing yards. Running back Ray Rice had just 8 carries for 28 yards as the Ravens offense was just completely smothered.

This play right here, pretty much sums up the Ravens offense on Monday Night:

everyone in my office told me “the Jags have no chance” and “we are going to get killed”. nothing like a win you are not supposed to get. :)

MJD's gotta cure those fumbles

There’s a whole week of dissection, but I’m going to enjoy this one for a couple of days

How great was it.....

To have a competent punt returner back there.

No way we win this game if Turk was still punting the way he was.

but I think we can all agree that a WR will be our first pick in the draft. Lets keep drafting defense too so we can improve our depth and see that every week!!!! Woohoo!

WOW!!! I lost my voice in the third quarter. What a display of man to man coverage. Where has this been? Hats off to Cox and Mathis. The Tackling! Have not seen the Jags tackling like that in a long time. Our passing offense struggled, but the o-line and Drew put up a tough 100+.

horrible? not really.

He didn’t have a great game by no means, but horrible? If he had thrown interceptions and or fumbled that would have made it horrible. He didn’t make any huge mistakes and connected with his receivers when we needed it. Gabbert still has a ways to go, but horrible? no.

According to the a-holes at ESPN

Jacksonville didn’t win, Baltimore lost. And of course, what you witnessed wasn’t smothering Jaguars defense imposing their will on a hapless Ravens team, but actually sloppy offensive play. If someone that didn’t know anything about football was to listen to ESPN’s post-game analysis, Ray Rice CHOSE to allow those pesky Jacksonville defensemen to tackle him. They even went so far as to show post-game news conference clips only from Harbaugh and Flacco. Nothing from the winning team. ESPN can kiss my…

(whew) Ok, that’s off my chest. I will never speak of it again.

No - no, you're right.

I asked this last night. Will [the proverbial] “they” say that the Jags defense played great, or did the Ravens play lousy? Obviously, Flacco was awful, but that defense gave him no chance.

I'd rather be golfing.

by iodrew on Oct 25, 2011 8:46 AM EDT up reply actions

On NFL radio this morning

All they could talk about was how the LOCKOUT had caused the Ravens offense to play sloppy and inconsistent. I listened for 25mins on the way to work and not one ounce of credit to the Jags in any way.

At this point I just have to laugh. It’s gotten to the point where I’m no longer offended. The lockout is the reason we blanketed the Raven’s recievers, harassed Flacco, and domintated the point of attack in the running game!

Bwahahaha!!!

The National Media hates us

They hated the fact we got a team. They hate the fact the team is still here. Thanks the guys like Tony kornholer and his waffle house comments we continue to get no respect. Thats ok. Last night was a big “OH YEAH?” moment and they know it. We made them look stupid.

the amount of Raven’s awesomeness we heard about this week. Their fans were soooooo confident. It makes it that much sweeter.

Can I get a “That’s so Ravens”?!

by Jagtastic on Oct 25, 2011 9:50 AM EDT up reply actions

The guys doing the game

were giving Pot Roast and the defense credit but that’s because they actually do some pre-game research on the team. The guys doing the highlight shows only see 4-1 vs 1-5 so of course it was the Raven’s fault.

Let’s win this week, come back from the BYE and win @CLE & @IND and see how they talk about us on MNF on 12/5 when we’ve won 4 straight and are 5-5.

by pksiv on Oct 25, 2011 9:11 AM EDT up reply actions

If the s ore had been 12-7 Ravens

And the Jags hadn’t scored until 3 minutes left, alll the media would be talking about how stifling the Ranens defense was. That’s because the have that reputation. Because the Jags don’t (yet) have the same reputation, the “experts” aren’t yet willing to credit them for controlling that aspect of the game. Easier to just explain it with “Ravens had an off night.” Jags are going to have to play like that consistently (AND put together a few wins) to start getting some credit. Pretty impressive turnaround from last year’s defense — with a lot people deserving credit.

So hard to choose! For me it would either be Daryll Smith (yet again) or Cox and Mathis as a Duo.

Defense was great

but Gabbert looked terrible on his accuracy and he continues to take bad sacks. He did make two decent throws in the end zone that Jones and Lewis should have caught. I am hoping it is only rookie mistakes but his accuracy is what really concerns me…

To me,

when Gabbert steps into his throws properly, he’s deadly accurate with a lightning release. We’ve seen many QB’s (rookies and vets) in the situations he’s been in, turning the ball over with bad throws, or fumbling when he’s on the run or getting sacked. He’s simply not doing anything that makes you go: “What the heck was that?” He wants to be good and I think he will be.

Blaine Gabbert than everyone else is.

He has physical ability, no question. But he isn’t showing a whole lot of poise just yet.

by pksiv on Oct 25, 2011 9:12 AM EDT up reply actions

It seems to me.

Like he made adjustments pretty well, early on he looked to shy away from pressure but as the game developed he got some more.
Also being handcuffed in the first half with fumble problems seems like it really had a negative effect on him.

I'm not buying that Gabbert is "soft"

or consistently shies away from contact, but he really has poor mechanics at times. He was throwing off his back foot far too often last night.

Gabbert

Is struggling but hes not turning it over. Its hard to ask for more then that from a rook. Especially considering the lockout. I think the d is dominant. Every pick up made an impact. Lowery, landry, poz, roth, coleman and even sessions. And cox and mathis dominated.

A win is a win!

The defense was simply AWESOME. Now if the offense could improve that much as well this team would have playoff potential. Gabbert had no time once again, and critical passes were dropped or missed. I hate to be critical of MJD, but he needs some sticky stuff on his hands. That fumble on the 1 was really bad!
This was an enjoyable game to watch, and kept you engaged all the way through.
Great going team!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by agurusguru on Oct 25, 2011 9:13 AM EDT reply actions

I didn't think we had a chance

I knew the defense had to start fast, but holy shit that was incredible. It’s been awhile since I’ve heard “The Smothering Jaguars secondary”, in fact I can’t remember ever hearing that. I was proud of how MoJo bounced back from his fumbles and put the offense on his shoulders.

Gabbert was bad to awful though. It looks like the Marcedes we all knew outside of last season is back, why can’t he hold onto the ball?!?!

I thought the linebackers played their best game ever.

by Jagtastic on Oct 25, 2011 9:14 AM EDT reply actions

Which brings me to a few more points.

I have a new respect for Mel Tucker and what they’ve done. I also have a new respect for MJD and his helpers getting 100+ yds. against the Ravens defense. And, another thing I mentioned last night, with just half the drops removed this season, JDR and the Jags are viewed in a whole different light.

I'd rather be golfing.

by iodrew on Oct 25, 2011 9:24 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't get it with Marcedes

I really don’t. How did he regress like this? If he holds onto that one in the endzone and MJD gets a TD instead of fumbling on the 1 and the offense looks leaps and bounds better.

by Jagtastic on Oct 25, 2011 9:28 AM EDT up reply actions

What makes me laugh about all this

is that Mel Tucker is going to get all the credit for the Defense, and I’m not arguing that fact, but had they laid an egg, Jack Del Rio would’ve gotten all the blame.

I see a team that is really playing hard for their head coach and I really think this team is closer to being very good than many of us thought yesterday morning.

MJD needs to hold onto the ball. And Blaine Gabbert needs to get comfortable in the pocket. Once that happens, this team can at least contend for a playoff spot.

Sure, they still need a true #1 WR and some depth/consistency along the O-Line. But they really are close.

BTW: BAL is 5-2 and everyone over at Baltimore Beatdown is calling for Cam Cameron to be fired. Fans are a funny bunch.

Yep, the arrow for the Jags is point straight upwards right now.

This offense must catch up to the quality of defense next year before the defense comes down a notch. When that happens, this will be a complete, dangerous team. I would like to see enough this year for JDR to get one more chance. Aside from some of his decisions that drive me nuts, I like him.

That’s too funny about the Ravens’ fans though.

I'd rather be golfing.

Cox and Mathis are excellent last time

Mathis broke up a few passes and Cox had a better chance at catching the deep ball than the receivers he was covering a few times. The line looked energized and played great as well. Session had his best game by far. Gabbert and the recievers still aren’t on the same page, although he and hill seem to developing some chemistry. I don’t wanna call lewis a contact year player but he definitely looks like he has lost fire, not going to get the balls he was last year.

by Sylvester.The.Jaguar.fan on Oct 25, 2011 9:27 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

Why don't you want to call Lewis a contract year player?

He’s been awful this year, a liability in the red zone and a reason the Jags are 2 and 5.

Gene Smith did a great job this year picking the right free agents. Poz is a beast and the Jets have to miss Coleman and Landry. They have played at a high level all year.

It’ll have to be like the 2000 Ravens and let the defense lead us while the offense musters just enough points, but then again we have played the top defenses in the NFL so maybe its smoother treading after the bye.

Every single player on defense did their job and i noticed them..they all made plays, alualu had a tough game being double teamed obviously

Poz,Session, Saryl Smith all played unreal games

Cox,Mathis,Lowery,Landry all played unreal games

Mincey is a man out there.

He really bring an all effort and I’m still impressed that he is effect from the DT position. It must suck for opposing linemen to have to guard him because he manhandles them most of the time. His bull rush and swim move is nasty, now if he could add a little finesse to his game without taking away the power, he’d easily a 10+ sack a season defensive lineman for us.

And now I see why Alualu isn’t getting home as much now. He’s getting doubled more than anyone on the line right now. It’s been that way all season, so there he is officially considered a threat by the opposing team.

I think...

last night’s defensive effort paved the way for a new style of play for this defense. Forget the zone and play straight man to man. We seen that we have the front to handle the line of scrimmage and linebackers that are good at blitzing, so that should be the way to go now. They didn’t score until we used the zone, which is a very telling sign.

It was also good to see Chick almost get his third sack in three back to back games. He didn’t get there but his explosion off of the snap is obvious and I think he has secured DPR spot. He refines his game and he is going to be a terror week in and week out. I’m interested to see how the d-line plays out next year with the return of Austen Lane and Aaron Morgan, our other designated pass rusher. I’m thinking one of them might be the odd man out should D’Anthony be able to return. But at the same time maybe not with Mincey and Roth being able to play the defensive tackle spots. It’s crazy how one of the weaknesses of the team has become a strength, much like the entire defense has this year.

by Keenan J on Oct 25, 2011 11:04 AM EDT reply actions

They can only do that

when D. Cox is in the line up. He’s been out the past 3 games…

Awesome win

My son is a huge Jaguars fan and was simply ecstatic about last night’s win. Plus, it was televised nationally so he could watch at school. The best part was watching the ESPN crew stutter and choke on their pre-game predictions as the game wore on and the ending became inevitable. Again, awesome.

One other note is that you gotta respect the no-quit aspect of this team. If their records weren’t known, nobody could tell which team was 4-1 and which was 1-5. Unlike the quitting Colts, the Jags showed up and played like they wanted it.

Keep the faith!
