Source: Jaguars Bring In 13 For Workout

The Jacksonville Jaguars have a big division match up with the Houston Texans today, but the personnel department is still at work. The Jaguars will be bringing in a baker's dozen of guys for workouts today.

The players coming in are: Dan LeFevour (QB), Isaiah Stanback (WR/KR), Manuel Johnson (WR), John Chiles (WR), Chris Campbell (OT), Joel Reinders (OL), Corey Woods (OT), Colby Whitlock (DL), Marcus Brown (CB), Talmadge Jackson (CB), Robert McClain (CB), Thomas Nelson (CB), and Mike Newton (CB).

I'm not sure if any of these players will be signed to the active roster, but I believe all are still practice squad eligible. Most teams like to keep a third quarterback on the practice squad, so that could be the reason for Dan LeFevour. Or simply to have LeFevour throw to the receivers being brought in for a look. It's no surprise the team is taking a peek at offensive lineman, given Eben Britton has missed the last two games.

I wonder...

if any of these players could come in and have a Chick type impact. Unlikely but not entirely out of the realm of possibilites.

Also, if any of those receivers are signed. Who’s place does he take? We already have six with Sim-Walker, M80, Hill, Dillard, Shorts and Osgood. I don’t see room for another one unless he’s going the practice squad.

At least that’s what I’m thinking… If he doesn’t step up by preseason next year I would say he gone.

So what’s up with us bringing in all these guys? Is this a behind the scenes move setting us up for a coaching change in the next two weeks?

I can't think of a team

But for a 4th round pick who had a pretty good preseason and is playing with a struggling rookie QB…..I think a team with a need for WR and a veteran QB could take a flier on him

What ability?

He’s had zero catches. Dillard is deactivated on and off and has more catches. Hell Chastin West and MSW have more catches. He can’t return any punts. Cecil is garbage. No speed, can’t run a route to save his life, not quick, no hands. What ability?

Are you in a NFL FO? Are you a scout? Are you evaluating him in limited snaps, or have you seen him practice? I hate people who think they know better than NFL coaches, GM’s, etc

Here why dont you explain this one: Why is Karim ran up the middle between the tackles. Why is Brock Bolen a 3rd String FB lined up wide as a receiver? Is that suppose to scare somebody?

we have a GM who over reaches for 1AA players all the time

so the 4th round draft position is meaningless in this specific situation. Gene Smith is an awesome sponsor of the make a wish foundation for 1AA – Div III – NAIA players the world over - as GM, I find him very suspect.

Shorts has ZERO business on an NFL field in any capacity.

A rookie season and another preseason to prove his worth? Is that all he gets? I’d hate to play on a team if you were the GM. And I’m with tiquan here, a team would surely sign him if he went to the practice squad.

As far as shorts goes I thought we had a chance to counter any offers by another team before they just take shorts from us…. And I am pretty confident no one would want him based on his play so far this year. I’m just throwing out the coaching thing… I don’t remember us bringing in 13 guys mid season last year for workouts.

I just throwing it out there. We aren’t going to change GM mid season. Maybe behind closed doors smith and weaver went to koetter and said “what would u do different?” and he said “bring some guys in”. Is this outside the realm of possibilities? Im just throwing stuff out there.

Ok well I’m just looking at the timing of the whole thing and it’s suspect. Today’s loss will make a shot at the playoffs very tough. Alfie did we bring in this many guys mid season last year I can’t remember.

No, it’s not suspect. Teams bring in players prior to the bye week all the team.

Bringing in players has absolutely nothing to do with a coaching change.

It's the beginning of a bye week. I imagine many teams do the same thing with the same time of year

it’d be arrogant and in our case irresponsible not to kick the tires on some players. I would not be surprised if we look at Choice and Bodden as well.

As a 4th round draft pick, isn’t there a chance someone would pick up Shorts based on a pre-draft grade alone? He is from a DIII player, and is not out of the question that he still needs a little time to develop. Yes, I realize that you never know if other teams had him rated, but I would at least think it would be a risky move.

I think that his performance is being magnified due to the lack of production in the passing game, and as a draft pick, I think people were hoping for a spark. Hopefully, it just takes time.
