Loosen Up Gene
I'm not here to write another thread and complain about Gene taking guys from small schools in the draft. Would I prefer taking proven talent from BCS programs?...of course. I think the majority of us would. The bigger problem with Gene is his insistence on taking guys with perfect conduct and integrity. I am a believer of a mix of personalities. This is what makes leaders and causes the team to bond together. I'm not insinuating we should go out and get TO or Randy Moss. TO and Moss have more than character issues. TO is a locker room cancer and Randy only plays when he feels like it. That's way beyond conduct and integrity. My point is that this is football, not a monastery. We could use some guys that cause a stir here and there. It keeps the players on their toes.
We all know that the Jags WR's are probably the worst WR unit in the NFL today. This is no secret. Everyone except the Jags FO sees this. Who has the power to do something about it...only Gene. To fix the main problem we first need to identify what are the WR's weaknesses and what strengths they possess. The Jags have Mike Thomas as the number 1. Mike Thomas should be in the slot. He is not a number one or two guy. To prove it, his biggest play was when last week against the Saints...in the slot on a slant/screen play. He is very poor on deep routes and does not adjust to the ball in the air very well. He shows no leaping ability. I think a big reason David failed in the vertical passing game was simply because he was trying to throw to Thomas. Thomas is lost on the deep pass plays. Jason Hill is actually pretty good on vertical routes. He gets open deep. He should be running many more verticals instead of curls and short posts. The other Wr's on our squad possess combinations of those guys, too. Cecil Shorts proved last week on 4th down he's not the best at going up and getting the ball. In fact, none of the Jags Wr's possess that talent. It's been obvious to me that we do not have anyone that adjusts to the ball in the air on deep routes or attacks the ball on outs and over the middle. Translation, we need a big body, aggressive, possession WR.
Right now there is some talent out on the market at bigger WR's that are better options that what we are dealing with now. Again, forget about TO or Randy Moss. How about a young WR with all the upside in the world in Dwayne Jarret? However, Gene would never look at him because of his past arrests ie conduct issues. He has a couple DUI's but he wasn't a locker room cancer. He actually gained a starting job last season before he was arrested on the 2nd DUI. Jarret is a big body WR that the Jags are lacking. He could be a great possession guy to move the chains. Koetter himself just mentioned this week that the Jags offense's biggest problem is converting on 3rd down. Well here ya go! It sure would have been nice last week to throw that 4th down pass on the Jags 1st drive to a big body like Jarrett. Instead we watched Jason Hill get shielded out of the way from grabbing the ball and it's a turnover on downs.
Who are some other big big body WR's still available? Limas Sweed and Patrick Turner are out there. These guys were all world in high school and very productive college players on the big stage at Texas and USC. Turner looked very good in the Jets preseason games. Sweed was cut from the Steelers but they have Hines Ward and Mike Wallace. Hines Ward is there possession guy and Mike Wallace is the deep threat. Limas didn't fit in there. Call these guys in for tryouts already.
Back to Gene. It's now painfully obvious his talent evaluation of the Jag's WR's was way off this season. We had the opportunity to get proven WR talent in Free Agency. Except we ended up with nothing. Why, because the majority of the guys we could've gotten have conduct issues. Again, not big character flaws or cancerous attitudes but conduct issues. Let see here, Braylon Edwards was signed for LESS than we are paying Mike Thomas. He would immediately be our number one guy. Except Edwards has had some run-ins with the law. Edwards is a really good WR no matter what any Jets fan claims. Plaxico Burress was a free agent. He's one of the best possession WR's in NFL history, except he was in prison. Santonio Holmes was a free agent. We likely never had a chance but Gene still would never touch a guy known for smoking a lil marijuana now and then. How about Brandon Tate? He would be the biggest threat on our offense right now. At the very least he would be a HUGE upgrade returning punts over Cecil Shorts. Nope, he's not a Gene guy because he's been involved in an NCAA scandal. To top it off , there are the no problem guys that we still did not pursue... Malcolm Floyd, Sidney Rice, James Jones, Steve Breaston, Steve Smith, and even Laurent Robinson who I used to surf with in Melbourne, FL. Yes, I said surf. This season is a catastrophic whiff in which should change our slogan to "In Gene We Question."

Sorry dude...
but I don’t agree with most of what you are saying here. First, we all know this is football and not a monestary, but what player has Gene drafted that any of us would not consider a football player? I don’t know where people are getting this whole Gene only drafts choir boys stuff. He drafts players that he believes will do their best to be the best that they can be on and off of the field, not choir boys. He’s looking for leaders that can come in and make this team their own, which is why being a team captain in college is important to him. As Gene has said before, being mentally tough is an important part of this game and I think that is the deciding factor a lot of times in the players he pursues to bring to this team. If Gene doesn’t believe that a player can endure the rough patches with his teammates, then he doesn’t want them to be a Jaguar. I think that mental fortitude was one of the reasons we overachieved last year with our 8-8 season.
And seriously, this we need a wide receiver banter is tired. We all know that we need a receiver that fits the mold of a typical number one, but no one out their is going to come in and make our receiving corps that much better. And is it really reasonable to believe that guys who can’t make rosters on the other 31 teams in the league are going to come in and be better than what we have? It’s hard to believe that Gene didn’t at least show interest in some of the free agent wideouts that was available in this past free agency pool, but as I said, there are 31 other teams out their so it’s next to impossible for us to know who was interested in who. Just let it go. I’m sure come next off-season, every area of concern on this team that Gene can address, he will. If he’s still our GM next year.
And one more thing. David wasn’t good on deep passes because he wasn’t accurate enough to connect on them on a consistent basis. It wasn’t always the receivers fault and besides, M80 was only here for 2 of the five years David was the starter, so he isn’t to blame.
gene smith gets that reputation cuz he only drafts senior captains. look at last years draft. other than blaine they were all senior captains on their football team

Not so fast
Gene and JDR said publicly before free agency that they were not going to look for free agent help at WR. They said they were happy with the guys on the roster and wanted to develop them. Gene gave the impression he expected Jarrett Dillard to be a major contributor this season. They said they’d be agressive at LB and Safety. Which they did.
Actually, DG hit Jason Hill deep just fine last season. Despite the fact that Hill dropped two of three the passes. DG is not a premier deep passer. He was average and he lacked deep weapons. Remember Nate Hughes dropping bombs? When did Reggie Williams ever get open deep?..never. Matt Jones, once in a blue moon. M80 has never caught a deep pass in the NFL. Not even in preseason. DG tried to hit him deep on a 4th down play last year but m80 did not even jump for the ball. It wasn’t the best pass but M80 has no vertical leap or body control. You can get away with that if you’re 6’3 but not at 5’8. M80 is no Steve Smith is all I’m saying. An average #1 or #2 WR might come down with that ball or at least got a hand on it.

Edwards? Burress? Holmes?
No, no, and no. Rice? No. The only guy I feel there could be a case for is Malcolm Floyd.

you guys seem to have peices in place
Had some of the des you drafted actually panned out you would have a very very good dline. And you seem to be pretty good at adding people in free agency. How long has you’re gm been there?

Really?
You honestly believe the next coach is either go to re-sign Gene Smith rather than hire his own guy to be GM.
If Gene was going to be here past JDR, why does his contract end this year.
Also Gene was high on Harvey and scouted everyone in the Shack Error as well. He’s not flawless
True
but most coaches like to have people they can get along with in place. ESPECIALLY if you are going to hire a “name” coach
Dude... do you know how an NFL team works?
More often than not, the GM and coach are at the same level, or the GM is higher than the coach on the totem pole. And if you honestly think Jacksonville is going to hire a “name” coach, you’re confused.
Even if both Gene and Jack are gone next year, look at the patterns in those situations. Who is hired first? GM. Why? Because the GM, not the coach, needs someone who they can get along with and who will work within the GM’s parameters.

I'd rather look for a guy like Suh
Obviously that’s a special player, but I want a guy that is a great guy off the field, but dangerously violent on it. That guy just does the most outrageously violent stuff ever on the field.

gene is a bust
im sorry but he is. the lions went 0-16 and got a new gm after the season was over THE SAME YEAR gene smith was appointed as new Gm. look at the lions and look at us now. thats how a good gm rebuilds a team. gene is average other than knighton no pick hes had has been a slam dunk. i just hope the jags find a new gm to right the ship with smart picks instead of reaches and the jags will be back to the glory days!
Cold Blooded
Bad comparison.
This team hasn’t had the luxury of having top 5 picks year in and year out. It’s only a matter of time before a team turns it around after having high round drafts picks like that.
thats not true
detroit before their new gm had top 5 picks almost every year and they were bust after bust. he hit on his draft picks and they were homeruns. pretty much everybody knew suh was a homerun so i wont give him credit for that but not everybody was onboard with stafford and he has panned out as a potential top 10 quarterback. the point i was trying to make was he made it work with what he had but gene hasnt. theres no reason we should be basically the same team as the 08 squad

But we're not...
basically the same team as the 08 squad. Now we have a potential franchise QB and a respectable defense, which we couldn’t say in ’08. Your point is taken, but truth be told, it would require a more in-depth analysis to see what both teams have done since then to decide whether or not Gene has been doing his job up to standard.
