Jaguars OL Eben Britton placed on IR

ORCHARD PARK, NY - OCTOBER 10: Eben Britton #73 of the Jacksonville Jaguars prepares to block Chris Kelsay #90 of the Buffalo Bills at Ralph Wilson Stadium on October 10, 2010 in Orchard Park, New York. (Photo by Rick Stewart/Getty Images)

The Jaguars announced via Twitter today that offensive lineman Eben Britton will be placed on injured reserve with a back injury.

Britton sustained a back injury during training camp and had a minor surgery to repair it. He eventually returned to the lineup in time to contribute in week two against the Jets and start in week three against the Panthers. However, he reaggravated the injury and was a surprise inactive against the Steelers.

During the course of the season, Britton played at both his usual right tackle spot and saw his first time at the left guard position. Whether or not he will return to the Jaguars next year as a left guard or a right tackle has not been determined at this point and likely wont be until training camp of 2012.

Britton has been replaced in the lineup in the games he was inactive by Guy Whimper and Cameron Bradfield and that will likely remain the case in coming weeks. Jack Del Rio said in his press conference today that he doesn't believe Britton's back will require a second surgery to repair.

Haha

Dude....this sucks. Mathis, Britton, and Jennings....on the shelf.

The year already sucked but at least I felt we had a chance. Without Mathis specifically (to keep the D where it’s playing) and Britton to help the offensive line’s weaknesses improve this season is done (if it already wasn’t).

I thought Bradfield replaced Monroe against the Steelers

he also played right tackle?

So who do we pick up

to fill the empty roster spots? Obviously no ‘name’ players, which is fine with me

@ProFootballTalk
Jags could be signing Ashton Youboty to replace Rasean Mathis, along with a couple of other veteran players.

Shot in the dark

we have 3 wins, why bother signing vets for probably no gain.

by Ewdtrey on Nov 14, 2011 3:27 PM EST up reply actions

At the very least

I think you want to make sure you have bodies for practice and special teams.

by pksiv on Nov 14, 2011 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

I guess young vets

are fine, especially if they play good special teams. Don’t think it’s because we are trying to replace Mathis.

by Ewdtrey on Nov 14, 2011 7:30 PM EST up reply actions

Well

there’s certainly not going to be anyone of his caliber sitting at home right now. But as you move DB’s up the depth chart I’d think you’d want to back fill them on special teams.

ARRRRRRRGH

this kinda blows. This guy is consistently hurt it seems and has not been overly impressive in what action he has seen over years. Purely for the sake of continuity on this line, I find it kind of hard to just replug him in next year to this O-Line.

by Jagsrok9008 on Nov 14, 2011 3:25 PM EST reply actions

You mean cut him?

He has been unlucky. If he ends up on IR next year then maybe he he can take the “brittle” tag…

by Hektik on Nov 14, 2011 5:27 PM EST up reply actions

So, it takes 3 years of IR before you get the injury prone label?

News flash: Back injuries, especially disk issues, don’t go away.

by Alfie Crow on Nov 14, 2011 6:12 PM EST up reply actions

He’s in a pretty good place for recovery. And news flash, most disc injuries do go away. Especially with access to the level of physiotherapy and medecine available to an NFL player.

by Hektik on Nov 14, 2011 6:39 PM EST up reply actions

Very rarely, do they go away. He’s not in a good spot. He’s a 24 year old with disc issues in his back.

by Alfie Crow on Nov 14, 2011 6:47 PM EST up reply actions

ie. young enough to recover.

by Hektik on Nov 14, 2011 8:49 PM EST up reply actions

Guess you don’t know anyone with disc issues?

Youth has nothing to do with it.

by Alfie Crow on Nov 15, 2011 11:02 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Disc issues also don't mean you should

take a guy out to pasture. He can still be a productive and even consistently healthy. Lots of players have productive careers after injuring a disc. Kyle Vanden Bosch? Gerald Alexander? Jon Kitna?

by Ewdtrey on Nov 14, 2011 7:34 PM EST up reply actions

Where did I say anything about out to pasture?

Britton is far from a lock on next years roster.

by Alfie Crow on Nov 15, 2011 11:01 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Please tell me your kidding?!

The guy is the definition of useless

by Section242 on Nov 14, 2011 6:33 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Look at the Positive Side

We won yesterday without Britton. When he returns next year, we will be stronger on the OL.

by three finger on Nov 14, 2011 3:56 PM EST reply actions

That’s assuming Britton is a good offensive lineman, which is still an unknown.

by Alfie Crow on Nov 14, 2011 6:12 PM EST up reply actions

Its about time to cut him

he is injury prone, I guess they could try keeping for depth if he takes a pay cut but outside of that I don’t see a future for him on the roster.
