What about picking up a receiver in free agency?

Everyone talks about us drafting a receiver high in the draft next year, like Alshon Jeffery or Justin Blackmon, but what about free agency.  We made a big defensive splash in free agency this year, picking up Paul Posluszny, Clint Session, Dawan Landry, Matt Roth, and grabbing Dwight Lowery in a trade.  Well maybe next season, we make an offensive splash, and pick up a quality receiver.  Who is set to be a free agent next season at wide receiver?

Star-divide

2012 Wide Receiver Free Agents

Mike Wallace(Restricted)

DeSean Jackson

Wes Welker

Dwayne Bowe

Vincent Jackson

Stevie Johnson

Marques Colston

Reggie Wayne

Brandon Lloyd

Pierre Garcon

Out of these receivers, I would target these, in this order:

  1. Stevie Johnson
  2. Dwane Bowe
  3. DeSean Jackson
  4. Marques Colston
I wouldn't go after the other ones, because of age, Wallace being restricted, and I believe Garcon can't compete with the top notch receivers, although he has taken a big step forward this year.  I like Johnson first, because he's young, and is an all around good receiver.  Bowe is a great possesion receiver, who has speed too.  He would help Gabbert a lot.  Although Desean Jackson is probably the most talented player on this list, he wouldn't fit too well on the Jaguars.  We need a true #1 receiver, and Jackson is a #1, but he isn't a guy your quarterback can know will be there to make the catch every play.  He only makes 2-3 catches a game, but he puts up big yards.  Gabbert needs a guy who he can look at every play.  Marques Colston is a big possesion receiver, that I like a lot.  I feel that the Jaguars should sign a receiver in free agency, and draft a lineman in the first round, like Matt Kalil or Jonathan Martin.  Or, if the Jaguars turn their season around, Brandon Washington, or Riley Reiff.

I agree with the list, but I would LOVE to steal Wayne from Indy.

I would stay clear of D-JAX, just does not seem to be a team player. I really like Colston, just wonder if it is Brees, and the system or if he is that good.

My bet would be Bowe. Yet, the problem with all WR’s is that it is easy to bust.

I would like to see 2nd and 3rd round picks on WR if BAP – with the idea that you have a wr at that level.

I really, really like Kalil and dream of having him play RT with Monroe LT Britton LG and Rackley C for the next 10 years. Fans can dream right?!

Question – and fanpost idea, What WR’s are safe on the Jags roster? Only Thomas? or is Shorts safe too even with NO I mean NO production? Hill, , Robiskie, Dillard, West, and Shorts should feel like this is the time to be competing for their professional careers.

Dream WR group of next year. Just hypothetical madden style.

Wayne FA, Bowe FA, TOON (3rd), Sanu(2nd), Thomas, Shorts Dillard Osgood. Thats 8 I think so SHORTS and Dillard maybe out. To make it 6.

Another Idea for FA. STEAL FROM THE DIVISION!

Jeff Fisher HC

Mario Williams DE
Cortland Finnegan DB
Reggie Wayne WR

Get Blackmon in the Draft. SUPERBOWL!

OK. I maybe getting a little... slightly hyper on this topic.

I still think it would be awesome to steal one FA from the division, at least make the price go up. I like Bowe, and Johnson the most and hope that the Jags can land a good FA.

My signing would be

Brandon Lloyd. Those other guys either wont be going anywhere, or wont fit in here with what we want; either their talent or their mental makeup.
Wayne is too slow and old and drops more passes every year.
Wallace isn’t going anywhere.
DeSean Jackson not what we want, too expensive, probably wont be let go, mental makeup
Wes Welker- Isn’t going anywher.
Bowe- Has motivation issues, problems with drops, more expensive than worth
Jackson-Expensive, hurt, mental makeup, doesn’t really fit this system
Steve Johnson-Not going anywhere
Colston- Not going anywhere, hurt, dropsies
Garcon-Wont fix our problems, not consistent enough to be a number 1.

FA WR's are a tricky business.

There is no name that jumps out at me as a no brainer.

by Jewasaurus on Nov 20, 2011 5:27 AM EST up reply actions

This is what I'd like to happen.

Jaguars sign:
Marques Colston

Jaguars release:
Cecil Shorts III
Jason Hill

Jaguars draft:
1. Jonathan Martin
2. Dwight Jones
3. Brewster

O-Line next year:
LT: Monroe
LG: Britton
C: Meester
RG: Nwaneri
RT: Martin

WR next year:
1. Marques Colston
2. Dwight Jones
3. Mike Thomas
4. Jarret Dillard
5. Chastin West

Colston ain't leaving NO

Shorts has had all of half a year under his belt so releasing him is a stupid move. I also doubt Brewster is there in the third round

we'll never sign those guys

if you are a wideout why would you leave a place you are already the number one receiver at to get the ball thrown to you by plain gabbert? honestly?

should be looking at the second tier guys more then the bowes and jacksons

we have the second most cap room in the league

it is very feasible that we offer higher than other teams to some receivers.

highly doubt it

cuz youre talking 50, 60 mil for some of those guys and i dont think genes gonna spend that on a postion he doesnt think is valuable

I would love to sign Mario, but I dont know if Houston would let him get away

Although they have been playing great without him. Sign Mario to a big contract and sign Bowe or Colston. Then I would draft either Claiborne or an OT. Then in the second draft Sanu. In the third I would draft a CB or a guy like Stephen Hill out of GT. He drops some simple passes, but he is a huge target who is a great deep threat. Just watch some Youtube videos of him. He’s very similar to Calvin if he could get coached up.

say i am a houston fan.

and ths is one of things i am worried about. I would hate to lose mario to a rival, Now with that said i think Mario might have played his last game for houston, unless our FO thinks they want to sign him long term coming off yet another injury. I cannot see us using Franchise tag on him cause we will be looking at paying him 21 mil for one year.

Desean Jackson is an idiot

He is good don’t get me wrong, but also a full blown immature idiot. Last nights negated 50+ yard play due to him taunting showed that.

Harry Douglas

He wont be resigned by ATL since they have hardly any cap money and too many pending free agents on defense. He’s an under the radar guy with good speed and hands. I hope Gene picks up a free agent like Douglas and uses a draft pick in the 1st 3 rounds on another receiver.

what if

we signed reggie and meachem? the saints will only be able to keep meachem or colston and we all know who they will chose. and I think indy says bye to reggie and looks to the future and signs pierre garcon. so we take meachem as a good number two and get reggie to help blain for a year or two.

JAG NATION RULES IN 2012

We resign lowery , Roth , cj mosley, mathis , chick …… Sign Mincey to a good contract….. Pick up " super " Mario Williams in free agency and pick up CB Claiborne in the draft with our top pick. ……. That’s a nasty D that will dominate fools left and right ……. On offense we pick up Bowe in free agency and Mcnutt in the draft , we let hill walk and that would give us Bowe / Mcnutt / M80 / Lewis / MJD and a seasoned Gabbert ……. That gives us balance , something we desperately need !!! now we got something rolling here in jax-town baby !!! JAG NATION WILL DOMINATE IN 2012 ……… BOTTOM LINE SON !!!
