After Wayne Weaver stripped Del Rio of defensive play calling to get a chance to coach up the overall team, you can tell there isn't much coaching going on. The head coach should have at least one goal line play stored away in his bag of tricks or have the ability to draw up a play based on how the defense is playing. Not just leave it up to the offensive coordinator to call the right play. Del Rio is no longer calling the defense and its like his job has been reduced to throwing bad challenge flags. I am just saying if Del Rio doesn't know anything about offense and play calling, what is he doing?
It seems to me that the defense is blossoming under Mel Tucker granted the free agent signees. Coincidence? The Jaguar's defense that helped lead the team to a playoff run in 2007 was coached under current Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith. It was led to believe Mike Smith left because he and Del Rio got into it on the sidelines during the Jags vs Pats 2007 playoff game. Mike Smith wanted to blitz Brady, but Del Rio wanted to play off and keep everything underneath. That didn't work out so well, Jags lost. Mike Smith has gone on to Atlanta and has been successful so far in his career.
The next year, Gregg Williams comes in as the titled defensive coordinator, but this year Del Rio was more involved in the playcalling. 2007-2008 Jaguars record was 5-11. Gregg Williams went to New Orleans next year and wins a super bowl. Coincidence? Think not.
We need an X and O coach, one that can make in game adjustments on offense and defense. Not just a motivator.
