Gene Smith Looking at a New Tight End in the Draft?
Blaine Gabbert and Marcedes Lewis has not been connecting in 2011 season with just 15 reception's 174 yards and no touchdowns.
Lewis is ranked number 27 compared to Jimmy Graham at number 1 with 49 receptions for 713 yards and 5 touchdowns.
David Garrard with Lewis in 2010 was a different story Lewis was ranked number 9 in the NFL with 58 receptions for 700 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Hopefully they will fix the problem with this bye week and have a big game over IND. But, I also think that Gene Smith is looking into another tight end for the 2012 draft.
Dwayne Allen mite be a great pick as one of the top TE prospects at 6-4, 225 pounds, and 37 receptions for 464 and 5 touchdowns. Maybe, Ladarius Green at 6-6, 236 pounds, and 22 receptions, for 236 and 5 touchdowns.
Both are great choices in the 2012 draft.

I don't understand your rationale.
Marcedes Lewis is still good, has experience, and is comfortable in the Jags’ system. A TE wouldn’t hurt, but saying that Lewis and Gabbert won’t work is a little presumptuous. Gabbert’s played SIX games. Give it time. Dwayne Allen is a beast, though.

ok
I’ll give the time of after the bye week and if they dont connect more often we need to draft one
we could just draft a new QB instead..i dont get your reasoning either. Lewis has performed very well at the NFL level. BG hasnt as of yet. The kid needs time obviously. Saying we need to draft a TE because of the current situation between BG and Lewis is very premature. Not to mention doesnt make much sense.
we
shoulndnt get a new QB he just started but he not accurate down he field i just think that we should have 2 great treats in the TE position
his point was
Why get rid of someone who has proven themself, because they aren’t compatiable with the player who hasn’t.
I agree with the sentiment, but still a TE might be helpful. Just not top 3 rounds.

call me crazy
but i don’t see the need for a new #1 TE. Improve the WR group, and then you will see Marcedes as more of a weapon. Basically, a safety net is worthless when he is understood to be the biggest threat even over the wideouts. I do thin though a #2 Te could be in ordr. maybe bring Gabberts TE from Missou in
New England has Brady,
which makes their TEs work, Carolina has a pretty good receiving corp too.
I’m not against Egnew in the draft either, it was a legit connection in college, but he still needs to work on his run blocking.

ok
i think even thoogh we dont have a number 1 WR the 2 tight ends would work for us because blaine is not very accurate going deep so he like short fast passes and i think it would be great if we had 2 reliable TE
Please don't tell me
You think he can’t pass accurately deep because of his stats in Madden. The guy hasn’t thrown but like 6 deep passes, and 2 of them were for touchdowns and to two different receivers. The interceptions he threw deep came during what looked to be a monsoon and in the last game which happened to be a day that he really didn’t have any accuracy short either.
We have a project TE, his name is Zach Miller. If we’re gonna draft to replace somebody, it’s gonna be him because he can’t stay on the field. If Miller ever breaks out of his shell and gives us what he showed against the Browns in 2009, we will have that 2-TE threat.
Speaking of which, Gene Smith is a self-proclaimed BAP theorist. Whether he actually is or not is debatable, but assuming he is what he says, he’s not going to draft a TE for the sake of a 2-TE philosophy, he’s going to draft who he thinks is the best guy at the best value based on position. TE’s aren’t elite positions. Also, it would be viewed by most as a questionable personnel move to try and replace a guy you just resigned for 5 years and 23 million guaranteed.
It’s okay to be frustrated when a pro-bowl caliber guy who just had a breakout season in a contract year isn’t producing. A lot of people would call me crazy if I said the Titans should start thinking about replacing Chris Johnson; and Lewis is still doing a good job of covering Guy Whimper’s flaws in protection…and he isn’t pointing the finger at everyone else even though he isn’t producing.
Just relax…Mercedes isn’t the reason Gabbert’s struggling.
Zach Miller
Gabbert to Miller had some chemistry going until he was out for the year. If we can find a TE like Zach Miller in the later rounds, I could see the Jags picking up a TE in the draft while letting Zach Miller walk as a free agent. His contract is almost up, right? Why keep paying a fragile TE?

So you want to get a TE,
to help Gabbert… but you want him to be a fullback?
Thats interesting perspective.

Not sure who you think Lewis is, but
he’s still a beast physically and definitely not afraid to get hit.

I wouldnt be shocked if Gene used Lewis as trade bait for more picks.

This
Is the only way I see us getting a TE with a high pick. I’d be surprised to see Gene do it in a contract year, though…and again especially after we just gave him a Franchise-sized contract.
A couple of seasons ago the following were used as great receiving tight ends: Brent Celek, Visante Shaincoe, Jeremichael Finley, Dallas Clark, Zach Miller (seahawks). Some of these guys have been injured, gotten a new QB, had their QB start looking to other targets, or have started to get old. All but the last 2 are great blocking TEs and Clark/Miller are still adequate. Celek has shown he’s still good, but doesn’t get much opportunity. There are so many targets in Green Bay that when Finley is healthy its hard to center an offense around him. Shaincoe/Clark were both put on IR, and now have issues with a reliable QB. Miller has been a victim of poor QBs since he came into the league, and some years he’s great, others it’s a stretch for him to make any plays. Players have to adjust to new situations….but they aren’t guys that get traded around a lot and they aren’t guys that adapt to new situations very fast, IMO.
They certainly aren’t guys that can carry a team on their back.
Considering Lewis was the anchor to our running and passing offense last year, and that this year he’s still covering up a bad offensive line, I just don’t think it’ll benefit us to trade him away. If we go heavy offensive line in the draft this year and neglect receiver again, maybe it’ll give him a chance to continue to make plays as a receiver. If we go heavy receiver….leave him doing his thing blocking. Lewis gives us options, even if he’s dropping a bunch of catchable passes right now from a guy that seems to make everyone on the team drop more passes then usual.
Lewis has diminished his value
so far this year. We wouldn’t trade him unless we could get what we is worth in a god year.
draft is over five months away. i’d rather wait til the college football season is over before giving into the mania

I agree,
there is no reason to say, we should draft so and so because it is way too early this year.
but,
I do think evaluating a teams needs is an entirely different beast.

I don't get your perspective here.
Lewis is a NFL starting tight end who is a great blocker and he is very physical sure he has had some drops but he is still a great tight end. And also Gabbert didn’t have any offseason to develop he has all the tools and mental toughness to be a starting QB in this league for a very long time.
This article doesn't make sense
Lewis is a pro bowl tight end but we could use another tight end and Gabbert was actually once thought of being the first pick
Would love to have the Dual TE threat like New England has
If we got Michael Egnew I would be thrilled
If we got Tom Brady
the TE’s we have on the roster now would probably be a dual threat.
I see your point.
Lewis just needs to quit being a diva. He has had some very good passes thrown to him and he drops them.

I dont see how dropping passes = being a diva
He just needs to get his head and his hands right

No offense
but this headline makes no sense. You’re not providing any info or evidence to show that Gene ACTUALLY is looking at a new tight end in the draft.
Seriously not trying to be a dick at all but I think it’s misleading and a little off-based to assume that Gene is going to spend picks on very early round TE’s (most analysts have them high) just because Marcedes has struggled some in the pass game
To be fair,
he uses a question mark, which usually indicates a question rather than a statement.
Which means that your post makes about as much sense.
nice try though?
"...I'm not trying to act giddy but the guy is a stud.'' - Terry McDonough, Director of Player Personnel, Jacksonville Jaguars
thats not what i was pointing out as not making sense....
if you were able to read and correctly understand what i was questioning then you would realize what i said was valid…
the headline (and the paragraphs that follow it) insinuates that there’s some reason to believe that gene smith is looking at taking a 1st round tight end in the draft….yet there’s nothing to support it, such as a quote from gene where he says that he would consider taking either 1 of these 2 guys in the first round.
appreciate your effort though?
I would agree tho that Gene could end up using a late rounder on another Zach Miller kind of TE...
I think most of us would agree that Miller represents great receiving potential and mismatches for defense but he has been hindered, almost his entire career, by injuries. That being said, I’m not sure that Gene wouldnt try to find another kind of raw, hybrid/ new-age, Dallas Clark kind of TE in the back end of the draft.
This is Insane
Lewis is an accomplished TE that is just another casualty of an offense that has not been performing togerther very long. Lets not forget his blocking ability and what numbers MJD has this year so far. They need time to develop. Blaine has gone against the top 3 defenses the last 3 games. The QB that have played these teams have struggled also I would imagine. Patience…
Premature.
Don’t worry, it happens to everybody some time or another
