Buccaneers Vs. Jaguars Final: Everything finally goes right for Jaguars in 41-14 win

Today might've been the first time since the Monday Night Football game against the Ravens that I didn't hate football. After falling behind early 14-0 in the first quarter with ugly displays by both the offense and defense, absolutely everything went the Jaguars way from then on. Prior to today's game against Tampa Bay, the Jaguars had never scored 21 points or more, yet doubled that with 41.

The Jaguars forced seven turnovers including a pair of fumble recoveries by Colin Cloherty and Nate Collins that both resulted in touchdowns. Offensively, the Jaguars were led as always by Maurice Jones-Drew.

He's really good, guys.

Star-divide

His four touchdowns (two rushing, two receiving) made him the all-time leader in Jaguars franchise history with 73 in his, still young, career. For a bit of perspective, he has 73 touchdowns in 90 games with the Jaguars while Jimmy Smith finished with 69 in 171 games and Fred Taylor had 70 in 138. He is tied for 39th all-time for NFL career rushing touchdowns with O.J. Simpson and Herschel Walker.

Also encouraging today was the improvement showed by Blaine Gabbert. While he made some errors, most notably two interceptions, they were mostly mental errors typical of a rookie. He was strong fundamentally, didn't fall away from pressure and made some very strong throws including one to Marcedes Lewis down the middle of the field that resulted in a 62 yard gain.

While the game means little for the Jaguars in 2011, it was an incredibly encouraging game for the future of the Jaguars and exactly what Gabbert and even the Jaguars fans needed.

On the downside, Russell Allen's kicking career may have ended today. Dreams crushed.

not be a super pessimistic,

but do realize that a lot of these points came from turnovers and plays made by the defense. I still see MUCH to be desired offensively

but the key is we took advantage of those turnovers

We got TDs vice field goals.

Some people

Are never happy. Our highest paid receiver was out most of the game, btw. It would have been 48-14 if not for a bad pass, and Gabbert broke 200 yards.

no shit, a win's a win

I could give a rats ass about style points. The kid had some moments today where he was dealing, and a lot of moments where the drives were stalled due to offensive line holds.

Also, bear in mind this is the first full week he’s worked with Koetter exclusively. There was a lot less skittishness today and he he extended a drive by staying in there and taking a helmet to the chops.

I am ecstatic

but I am also a realistic individual who is not going get super excited when I see aspects of this team that are still greatly lacking.

I recall feeling similalry after week 1, when I was very unimpressed with McCown. I shared my thoughts and got similar feedback, but lo and behold I was right in reserving my great amounts of joy and happiness, becuase in fact McCown went out and looked awful the next week.

This team has a short week and a matchup with Atlanta to look at this coming Thursday. An offense still as stagnant as this one, and there will be a lot of anger come friday morning on this site.

by Jagsrok9008 on Dec 11, 2011 6:13 PM EST up reply actions

if you want to go back and look at my comments after week 1

you would see I was far from impressed and was worried about him as the starting QB going forth.

by Jagsrok9008 on Dec 11, 2011 7:12 PM EST up reply actions

I hear you about not getting crazy abouyt 1 win, BUUUUUT...

-McCown is not a starting caliber NFL QB. The Browns knew it, the Buccaneers knew it, and people who watch football knew it. He was a 3rd round pick who never panned out as a starter. To compare him to a #10 pick overall who excelled at Mizzou is crazy. Gabbert has physical skills and an arm that McCown doesn’t possess. Thedre is good reason to get excited about Gabbert improving – becasue sky’s the limit with a young man of his talents.
- We shouldnt be angry if we lose Thursday night. The Falcons were picked by some (Peter King) to win the Super Bowl, and we have 4 wins. Its a short week, its a home game for the Falcons, we have 22 guys on IR and an interim HC. They should kill us. I hope we win, but I won’t be angry if we lose…we should lose.

this game shows that Gabbert is improving

to all of you that doubted him in the past, you guys didnt know much about football. something i saw from him today is he hung in the pocket even after it collapsed. he didnt fall backward. along with that, he had pretty good footwork. i had a feeling that he would spark sometime this season, just had to wait!!!

by jabrieck15 on Dec 11, 2011 6:20 PM EST up reply actions

dude come on..

…he played one of the worst defenses in the league. All QB’s looked fantastic against us last season.

by moufpuncha on Dec 11, 2011 7:30 PM EST up reply actions

I think a lot has to do

with the fact that he’s actually been coached these past two weeks. After looking scared, I bet he got told to nut-up or shut-up.

by jagzfan4life on Dec 11, 2011 7:51 PM EST up reply actions

I think we could all agree

that a more balanced offensive attack is in need if we want to beat the mid-tier teams on a consistant basis. Run MJD right, run MJD left, then screen to MJD on 3rd down seems to be the offensive pattern we are on right now. More disciplined defenses will eat our lunch if those are our only go-to plays.

I was soooo pissed off after the

first quarter then all of a sudden, the ball bounced our way. That pass to Marcedes was a thing of beauty. I am getting excited for next year’s team. If we can get play like that from Dillard, West, Lewis, MJD and getting Jennings and Miller back next year. We may not be so far away. The defense played great in places as well. 41 points???? The only negative is that Scobee may be hurt. IR anyone?

Fickle Fans get schooled

Gabbert has been steadily improving each week. You don’t need a highlight reel to see it. Today he made good throws, good decisions, and the line and receiver caught the damn ball.

by Slvrgun on Dec 11, 2011 4:55 PM EST reply actions

Get off your high horse

He hasn’t been improving week to week. In fact, he looked to be regressing over the past two weeks.

He played well today and for that I’m thankful.

by Jagtastic on Dec 11, 2011 4:58 PM EST up reply actions

No

Against Houston (twice), Baltimore and Pitt he regressed. Those are 3 top defenses, one of the 4 games he actually won.

In the last four games (including one of those against houston, he has gained 758 yards with 4 TDs and 4 picks.

In the four before that, he got 417 yards with 3 tds and 3 picks.

In the four before that, he got 608 with 3 tds and 2 pics.

If he’s guilty of any regression, it was in the middle of the season against the top defense twice, and the number 2 and number 3 defense.

What were YOU using to make your judgement?

by Mr.Awesome on Dec 11, 2011 5:34 PM EST up reply actions

Not just stats, that’s for sure.

by Alfie Crow on Dec 11, 2011 7:47 PM EST up reply actions

A fine argument

He looked like crap against San Diego, sans 2nd quarter. He looked awful against Houston.

I used my eyes and saw a quarterback cringing before he got hit throughout most of those games. I saw a quarterback who’s mechanics was falling to pieces. I think you saw that too, but you looked up some stats to feel intelligent. Thanks for the stats though.

by Jagtastic on Dec 11, 2011 8:17 PM EST up reply actions

I saw a QB cringing because he was stepping up into a pocket and no one was coming open

In that Texans game. I also saw where before he could even step into a throw he was getting killed. The difference today is that the line was blocking well and the WR/TE caught balls. Gabbert was also throwing better.

by Slvrgun on Dec 11, 2011 8:43 PM EST up reply actions

Gabbert played well today and the players around him finally helped him on a consistent basis. He needed a game like this and it was good to see.

I just hope it translates to Thursday;)

by Jagtastic on Dec 11, 2011 9:36 PM EST up reply actions

Did you see

That big-boy TD pass to Shorts (the guy everyone credits as mr. invisible). Did you see the hit he took right before he came out of the home Houston game? He got right back up and limped off. Did you see that crisp pass to Marcedes today? What about the dropped TD pass in the browns game to Jason Hill, among drops in the Cleveland game?

Coincidentally, in every game that you mentioned he found MJD for multiple receptions. He has also since the first Houston game been doing a better job of finding the check-downs. Both were things that coming out of the Houston game were big question marks around here.

He has also since been getting into a rhythm with mercedes. Mercedes still drops things. Gabberts still gaffes things.

His ability to stand in the face of the rush and deliver the ball is the talk of the town today, so it appears as though he’s starting to make strides there, as well.

If his mechanics has to wait until the offseason to see a big improvement, I’d call that fair.

Too many people are using the “eye-test” that don’t really know what to look for. Anyone can see a guy throw an inaccurate pass and be like “that was bad.”

by Mr.Awesome on Dec 11, 2011 8:43 PM EST up reply actions

He played well today, I’m not denying that.

We simply see the earlier games this season differently. I’m not going to get into his earlier struggles because it’s lame. Honestly, he won today and I am happy about it.

You may have seen earlier progress, but for me, it was today that progress was made. He played like a different QB then what we’ve seen all year.

by Jagtastic on Dec 11, 2011 9:41 PM EST up reply actions

Read this after i responded to your other comment, lol

You’re right, we see it differently and this is getting old. Lets compromise with he played much better today, and leave it at that. It’s a win and I feel silly for arguing.

One day I'll figure out

Why some people keep saying Thomas is a Wes Welker type. Wes Welker completes routes – every time. Thomas and Shorts both being out changed the game. Gabbert knew where the receivers should be for a change.

by patbert on Dec 11, 2011 5:55 PM EST up reply actions

Shorts?

Shorts has barely been in all year. I think Osgood had more snaps today than Shorts has had all year.

Did anybody else notice...

the huge amout of snaps Osgood had Sunday? And he wasan’t in only on obvious screen/run downs, either. He dropped a GREAT pass from Gabbert right in front of me (around the 15 yard line) that may have been 6 if he had caught it. Through it all, he stayed on the field for special teams and battled double teams on every Buc punt return.

not good numbers compared to say the leagues best

but on a Jags team that had suffered through the likes of having Jones, Wilford, and Williams as its top receiving threats for several seasons. For him to come in and catch 50+ balls and a couple of TD’s in his first two seasons you can understand why maybe fans got overzealous about the guy.

That’s my point.

by Alfie Crow on Dec 11, 2011 10:45 PM EST up reply actions

I wasn't trying to argue that he did

I’m saying there were other influences aside from Vic, that caused him to be overhyped. Plus he did have 114 catches and roughly 1300 yds combined in his first two seasons. Those are actually pretty good numbers especially considering we are a run-first team. And I think he’s more then just a guy, he’s having a down year but I think he’ll bounce back next year.

I'm going to hold off on a final critique for Thomas til we get a true #1

That being said, the extension was another in a line of classic Wayne Weaver benevolence. Did not need to be done at the time. I’m starting to think he might be best used as a return man and at best #2 but most likely #3.

Thomas has made some wow plays this year. I doubt he or Shorts plays Thursday night.

Lewis, yes. He’s slumping (most of the season) but it’s correctable.

Because picking a few slots earlier is a guaranteed successful draft

I understand how draft slotting works, I’d just rather see some things that got me hopeful for next year than get all worked up over a college player we may or may not get. The draft isn’t the only place to find players, btw – regardless of what a certain former senior editor might say.

It shocks me that Jag fans have such a hard time understanding this, especially given the turn around of the defense this year. The new “face” of our defense played his ball in upstate New York last year. Sometimes I think Vic did more to set the fan base back by preaching his dogma so consistently, it’s like Jag fans have been brainwashed.

by JohnnyBiceps on Dec 12, 2011 12:31 PM EST up reply actions

Exhibit A is defense

I think Vic cobbled together everything he learned about the Chuck Noll Steeler way and rationalized in his mind that that was the only way to build a team as it was also reminiscent of how Coughlin built it, and he could not put his finger on how Shack was trying to build the Jags.

Prisco said something the other day about how the Jags were that big menacing team off the bus and that it seemed to break down at the end of the year. I think he’s on to something.

Can you remember the last time the Jags won a game in December?

I agree with a lot of this

Everyone acts like Gene used a gameshark to make us so good on defense. Our success rate in the Free Agency has been just as important to us, if not more important, than the draft. I think what we’ve learned is that Gene likes to draft lineman, probably because it’s hard to find good lineman in their prime at the right price, and he’s unafraid to go after and pay the guys that he thinks are good values. Perhaps we should change it from BAP to BAV in all draft/FA acquisitions.

by Mr.Awesome on Dec 12, 2011 1:15 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly

Player acquisition is like investing in currency. So often it’s a crap shoot…no matter how good your information. it’s the epitome of past performance is no guarantee of future result…simply too many variables. The idea of using free agency merely as a stop gap while your players (hopefully) develop misses the mark because you are not maximizing all of the resources you have available to you. And if those players don’t develop the way you hoped they would, then you have a roster of stop gap, base hit journeymen and middle tier jars on the shelf that may never get off the shelf. That’s silly. Unless your the Cleveland Indians you’re not likely to win with a bunch of has-beens and some never-will-bes

I thought he seemed to have more confidence in the pocket. He wasn’t getting happy feet, and he was keeping his eyes downfield. Good day of learning for him. Even though the season is over, playoffs wise, these are the ways he builds his game.
Great day today.

That’s the mistake that you EXPECT from a rookie… also, HUGE props to Chad Pennington’s calling of the game. He actually gave Gabbert his dues and defended him.

I loved the win and I love the way our JAGS don’t quit …….we got half the roster on I R yet we battle till the end …. Montell Owens was a beast today and he and MJD take the game ball for sure ……. I will say this , not all went right today …… Blaine " Sunshine " Gabbert isn’t really improving much , he had bad easy throws and redone picks are the last thing you should do ….I hope he really does improve because if not then it’s another bust in the long line of former jag busts for us !!!

Dude really....

Get your head out of the Clouds and get some air, your brain is deprived, Gabbert didn’t look better or improved are you serious. He looked much improved over what we have come used to seeing from him….“throwing off his back foot, shying away from contact.” Today was the exact oppisite, he stepped into his throws, and moved only when absolutely needed to to extend the play. That right there shows progress.

That is exactly why he doesn't get more snaps at WR

he can’t consistently catch the ball. The coaches see him in practice, they know what he is, yet people still clamor for him to get more reps. As if we need another receiver who drops the ball.

Blaine did improve today

He actually stayed in the pocket and took hits. Yes he made a few poor throws i.e. the 2 INTs but his pocket presence was a lot better. Thats improvement considering at the beginning of the season he was scared of the wind blows towards him. Im not a huge Gabbert fan, and think that if Jags have the opportunity to draft Barkley and or RG3 we should seriously consider it. But as a fan who is still questioning Gabbert, he really did improve his presence today which is always a good thing.

I thought Gabbert looked his best all season today

Now, a 72.4 QB rating is not going to set the world on fire. However, he was not hearing the footsteps today like he has most of the season. He stuck some very nice throws and of course, a day without Jag WRs dropping a couple of passes is like a day without sunshine. Hopefully this sparks more outings like this and continue to build and improve.

About some assumption they read before the draft or a couple bad passes they saw then look foolish cheering for a guy who’s been struggling, yet improving.

It’s like those people who say “Ron Paul can’t get elected!” and don’t even know he’s been top 3 on the straw poll all year, has been as high as second in the polls (depending one which polls you’re looking at) and had more applause at last night’s debate than the other 5. by Mr.Awesome on Dec 11, 2011 8:58 PM EST up reply actions

A temper-tantrum?

It doesn’t make me feel better to talk ill about him. He’s played a timid brand of football that doesn’t appeal to me. I’ve rooted for David Garrard for the past 4 years, how could my expectations be high?
Self-Righteousness? He’s paid to play a professional sport. Do I claim to be a better quarterback?

by Jagtastic on Dec 11, 2011 9:20 PM EST up reply actions

I rooted for Garrard too

He was as tough for us as they come.

What I see is a kid who has a tone of potential and is improving. We really wont know how much his little improvements over the year matter until a couple games into next season when we have seen how he can progress when it counts.

He’s got all the tools and he understands football. He’s almost too aware and overthinks a lot of situations…hence the happy feet and freak out mode he’s had this season when the rush is in his face. Some of these bad habits are improving. Not at a night and day rate…but it’s happening.

If he can mature, settle down and learn how to use his tools to get accurate, he has the potential to be great. Since this whole fanbase has PTSD to bad drafting, I think we’re over analyzing things to the point of forgetting the simplest part: he’s a record breakingly young quarterback whose been subject to bad coaching, bad timing, poor preparation and a bad supporting cast.

Can’t we wait till he’s been given a fair chance? Have you ever been in a position at a new job where you could be, and are willing to put the work in to be a great employee but the person training you sucked? If not, then ask a couple guys you know in the military…you get trained by a lot of people on the way through and ya get a real good look at how important good training can be.

Why do we have to start throwing the tomatoes this year? Rhett and tiquanunderwear are teenagers and show more patience and willingness to wait and see how he develops than half the guys on here. I just don’t get it. And I don’t mean to just target you here, but I mean this for all the guys expressing all the hate. Why is it so damn important that he’s special right now? Why can’t we save the Gabbert sucks chants for when its an appropriate time to start thinking about replacing him? Why be so pissed off now?

Wouldn’t it be a better idea to relax? If you got any good jokes about how bad he is I might think their funny, but if you’re gonna bash the kid before we know what he’s made of I think it’s a pretty big reflection of your personality.

Congrats to Gabbert/ MoJo

ive had a lot of confindence in Gabbert since the beginning of the season, it just took some time to adjust to the NFL. the thing i noticed was when Mike Sheppard was the QB Coach, we didnt have a multiple TD game. when Dirk Koetter became QB Coach, we have had 2. as for MoJo, this is another average game for MoJo. what i have noticed with MoJo is he is getting more receptions/ receiving yards when Gabbert is the QB, so i think MoJo will have a better career if Gabbert is in.

The deep pass play to Lewis was one that really got me excited

not because it was a long play downfield, but because Gabbert did what all the greats do. He kept his eyes downfield and just shuffled slightly in the pocket to make the throw. Early in the season he would have gotten freaked by the guys flying around him and probably gotten sacked.

I thought Gabbert looked great today. I have no problem with the int’s. He was much improved in the pocket. He didn’t let fear ruin his mechanics. I think Koetter must be helping him. Now, just get him a helmet that fits so that he can see and teach him to stand up tall to take advantage of his height.

I am liking Mel Tucker on the sideline. He reminds me of Cowher with that mean furrowed brow and his enthusiasm that has been missing in Jax for so long. It was great to see the team is behind him as well.

Gabbert overall played his best game

yes he was helped out by a lot of turnovers, some great special teams play and MJD, but he made more big boy throws and stepped up quite a bit today. Whatever your views, at least give them that. Plus, the team played its second best game of a disappointing season.

ok dude i'm done with this

If I post something and you don’t like it, move on. If you disagree with something I said, the go ahead and disagree smartly. If you had some kind of magic rebuttle for “what until thursday”, then you should have put that.

Personal attacks for a post like “wait until thursday” are completely unnecessary. It’s an open board, get over it. Not everybody here shares the same view as you. If I wanna post “wait until thursday”, it’s completely my right to do so. No matter what you think about it.

I really don’t care who you think you are, you have no idea who I am. You don’t know anything about me. All you know is you disagree with my posts. But if my posts are legal, carry on don’t throw insults. Opinions are opinions and I’m allowed to have mine just like everyone else is.

so 9/11 wasn’t really in play for me, aside from inactive reserve.

I knew I wasn’t going to make the Navy a career. At one point you thought you would thus you re enlisted.

the point is

you can’t ban anyone on the internet. you can ban a name, or even an ip address or an email addy. but you can never really ban a person.

do i need to break it down even further?

I can believe I read this far, but,

you’ve got a lot to learn. And, the things you need to learn transcend TCU. Thinking your all that, because you’re doing all that, is very egotistical. If you stay on this path, karma has humble pie waiting for you somewhere down the road – and it’s not “yummy.”

No one likes a party-pooper. If you’ve got a negative point to make, try starting out by saying something positive, then use some tact.

Throw the ball, score points.

Not nobody

Especially when it was 14-0. Think we can all say we were ready to lose by 41 at that point.
