Ask The Falcoholic!

Greetings, Jaguars fans. I have to say I've long been a fan of the franchise and Maurice Jones-Drew in particular, and you got another boost in my eyes by beating the Bucs. So kudos there.

Now down to business. I'm here to answer any questions you might have about the Atlanta Falcons. Want to know why they completely collapse for one quarter a game? Want to know what to expect for your fantasy team from Falcons starters? Want to know why we've nicknamed one of our players Spoonami? Ask away!

If you wouldn't mind recommending this so it will stay up at the top of the FanPost list, I would appreciate it.

Here's to a great game!

How does your defensive line look going into this weeks game?

Obviously the Jaguars rely heavily on MJD, so it should be interesting to see if he can continue his success against your Falcons D.

Our D-line is superb against the run

Minus a big play or two every game. That still might not be enough to stop MJD.

How do you feel about your run game?

We are depleted at CB. We are starting some kiddos from our practice squad. I fear Roddy and Julio will burn us up if we have to worry about a run game as well. Can we leave the box sparse and have our safeties help against the pass?

The ground game is something to watch for

Michael Turner has been slowed by groin injuries, but if he’s healthy he’s an absolute battering ram up the gut. Rookie Jacquizz Rodgers is dangerous on the outside, too.

Rodgers

is dangerous anywhere with the ball in his hands. Including inside and through the air.

by Ewdtrey on Dec 12, 2011 4:10 PM EST up reply actions

He really is

He’s underutilized in this offense, but deadly.

I was a big fan of his

wish we would have drafted him. After Jennings went down, our depth behind MJD went to shit. Although a guy we just brought up from the practice squad seems to have given us reason to believe in him. In fact he’s not all that different than Rodgers. Similar size, build, and running style.

forgot to mention the practice squad player’s name is DuJuan Harris a rookie UDFA from Troy

I've heard the name, but don't know much about him

I guess I’ll see him Thursday.

How bad is traffic gonna be

How much time do I need to leave to travel to the game, from the Emory area? I have a parking pass on the Red Deck, so I am bypassing MARTA. Having braved Atlanta traffic before, I’m worried it’s gonna take me two hours to get 4 miles…

I've heard it's bad

But you’re asking the wrong guy. I’m not an Atlanta native.

It is usually pretty bad.

Im from atlanta and the traffic is always bad, but there is some relief since it is on a thursday night and most traffic is heading the other way.

How is your Run D?

How much success will MJD have?

Big question

MJD’s so good it might not matter, but the run D is third in the NFL.

On a more serious note what’s is up with Matt Ryan this year? He seems to have taken a step back rather than a step into elite company

I think you can pin a lot of that on his cast

The O-line has allowed him to get hit 57 times, which is one of the highest totals in the NFC this season. The wide receivers lead the league in drops. He’s still struggled with overthrows and reads at times, but his numbers would be better without those mistakes.

Any update on Smitty?

He’s probably the second most beloved pro coach in Jacksonville.

If you ask me...

Biggest mistake Weaver ever made… Extending Del Rio & letting Smith go. Not that you really can dump an HC after a playoff run, but who said what-ifs are logical. :)

"Biggest mistake Weaver ever made…"

The Falcons have made the playoffs 2 out of 3 seasons but are 0-2 in the playoffs under Mike Smith. Not exactly the type of record I’d use to say it was the biggest mistake ever letting him go.

He's doing fine

Should be on hand for the game Thursday night, thankfully.

How is your offensive line playing?

Have you got any signifacant injuries in the last 2 weeks?
How good is your secondary?
Who are the best underrated players of the team?

The O-line is still struggling to gel

They seemed to turn a corner a couple of weeks ago, but they’ve been bad two weeks in a row now.

Brent Grimes will probably miss the game. He’s the most significant injury by far, given that he’s a borderline elite cornerback. Our secondary is good but not fantastic without him. Gabbert should be able to put up decent numbers.

Sean Weatherspoon is still extremely underrated, despite putting up four sacks and nearly 100 tackles at linebacker. He still whiffs on the occasional stop, but other than that he’s extremely good.

Harry Douglas is an underrated wide receiver. He moves the chains, has sure hands and quality agility and isn’t afraid to go over the middle. As a #3 guy, he’s a nice fit for the offense.

Douglas

is a good choice. If I remember correctly, he burned us pretty good in the preseason. Made Matt Ryan look like he had a much better day than he did.

by Ewdtrey on Dec 12, 2011 6:50 PM EST up reply actions

What is your situation at CB?

Is Brent Grimes gonna play this week?
How is your OL performing? I heard there have been changes.

by Ewdtrey on Dec 12, 2011 4:14 PM EST reply actions

See above

Grimes is most likely out, and the OL has some work to do.

I'm just getting so frustrated with Julio Jones on my fantasy team!!!! I can never know when to play him!!!! He either does nothing or puts up QB1 numbers!!! UGH! What kind of numbers do you expect him to put up this week?

I stay away from that kind of production

Speaking of fantasy football. I’m absolutely disgusted with my luck this year. 3 of my 4 losses this year have been by less than 6 hundredths of a point(Basically less than a yard!), after scoring the second most points that week averaging about 130 points per week during those losses.

I had a loss on Monday night last week when MJD was pulled from the game with almost 7 min left in the game and all I needed was one lousy stinkin yard. (Also doesn’t help when McFadden, Andre Johnson, and Fred Jackson all get hurt on me)
Boy did I need to vent that out. lol

by Ewdtrey on Dec 12, 2011 6:06 PM EST up reply actions

This week, he's an easy WR2

The Falcons have found their stride and he’s got a (sorry for saying so) reasonably favorable matchup.

That might be a mistake...

Except for Sunday we really haven’t played well all season, especially on the road.

We've won every game too

sans Jets, Panthers, Saints, Bengals, Steelers, Texans, Browns, Texans, Chargers
But seriously 3 points could be considered an insurmountable lead with our offense.

Mike Mularkey

There have been talks on Mularkey being the highest candidate on the Jaguars HC job. How will that affect the Falcons for next year, if he does become the HC?
