Jaguars Vs. Falcons Final: Ugly. 41-14. Ugh.
The Jaguars winning 41-14 was fun to see. The Jaguars losing 41-14 was extremely painful to watch.
Blaine Gabbert and the Jaguars offense was abused by the Falcons pass rushers, particularly John Abraham who finished with 3.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. The Jaguars depleted defense was abused and allowed more than 40 points for the first time all season.
It wasn't until Kassim Osgood blocked a Falcons punt that was recovered by Zach Potter for a touchdown did the Jaguars break the shutout. Gabbert finished the game with a drive against the Atlanta backups that culminated with a Chastin West touchdown in the final minute of the game.
Only two more games and the monster that is the 2011 season is finally over.

Thanks for the support/condolences...
You guys look loaded, hope that you guys can find consistency and make a run at this thing.
Thanks man.
I follow the falcons and your page as well and you do a heck of a job. Youre a classy man.
I'm with Dave
even as a Broncos fan, we have trouble with the Jags traditionally, I feel bad for what is going on. You guys are a classy Broncos rival, unlike the Faiders and Dolts (Chargers)

The only good part about that game is that MJD dominated a very good ATL rush defense. I think we have proved that we need to fix our O line and WRs. I’m going to drown out all of the idiots that are going to talk about Gabberts issues because I am not really expecting any changes in them until the offseason. He needs better guys around him and a better QB coach to grow. There is no point in drafting a QB to put him in the same hell hole that Blaine is in. Lets use the first round pick on a WR or OT that will improve the team immediately. What made tonight even more frustrating is that I live in Atlanta and put myself through the torture of watching the game with my Falcons friends. Rough night
Kinda sensed it was gonna be ugly after the first series
We were blown up off the ball and looked very flat coming out on defense. You can tell Atlanta was ready for this one, they played with an edge tonight and it felt like we were struggling to match their intensity all game.
This seemed different to me though
Its always hard to judge watching TV, but Atlanta looked like they were ready to rail on us from the start and we looked flustered. It was like they pushed us against a wall and we were shocked that they did if that makes sense. It could be that we don’t have the horses that the Falcons have too, personnel certainly played a factor tonight.
This season has been a total unlucky, bad season for the Jags. But the future is very bright.
We have almost all of our main DBs on the IR right now and with them for a full season would make a world of a difference. In the 1st round if we take an OT like Jonathan Martin I think that would solidfy the O Line. For the WRs, I like Dillard, Price, Thomas, and Robiskie to come back next season at WR and we add Bowe in free agency. Then we have MJD in the backfield. Lastly, I thought Gabbert did well in the 2nd half and with a good QB coach, watch out next year.

Blaine played like a rookie who has a
Bad wr Corp and a dip shit right tackle. Oh wait that’s exactly the situation he is in.
Rookie, Bad WR Core, and yes , Dip Shit Right Tackle....
are all key points, but the one thing that bothers me is that he (Blaine) looses desire in my opinion. I really question his drive to win at times, and that has me concerned. I hope I am wrong, but its what I felt I saw last night, and I really hoped he had worked through that against Tampa.
Gabbert...
Will wreck defenses in 2012. Also, how about that perfect missle he threw to Marcedes Lewis that bounced off his hands straight to an Atlanta defensive back? It’s been one of those years.

Uh
More like 2013. Next year he’ll be decent enough to not cost us a game.

Wait
Has Gabbert actually cost us a game THIS year? A game where we lost simply because of Gabbert?
by Adam Bealyer on Dec 16, 2011 12:59 AM EST up reply actions
Other than
all the close games where our defense kept us in the game and we just couldn’t move the ball? He may not of thrown picks that ended games, directly “costing” us the game, but due to how he plays he’s hindered the offense enough for us to have one of the worst offenses in the league.
Sure, it’s not ALL hist fault, but the QB drives the bus no matter what kind of offense you have.

That was my point
It’s not ALL his fault. Sure, there are going to be bad habits and growing pains, but this offense had a lot of problems besides there being a rookie QB under center.

Pocket awareness
His lack of pocket awareness and the fact that he folds under pressure can’t be over looked. I agreed with moving on from Garrard, but you have to admit that his mobility, ability to work with lackluster receivers and mediocre blocking is missed.

Well said.....
I was thinking this morning that, as you said, I agree with moving on, David may have been doing more than we realized last year. He damn sure never gave up, and I can not say that for our guy Blaine at this point.
Seriously?
You’re calling Blaine a quitter now? Give him freaking time to develop. Give him some freaking wide receivers. Give him some freaking protection.

To start the year
Gabbert had the same WRs that Garrard had when he set the franchise TD record last year. Not saying Gabbert should be expected to play like a 9 year vet but just trying to make the point that he bears a lot of responsibility for his play this year.

Also keep in mind that he
has never been in a situation like this before. Hes never played for a team that had such little talent on it. This is a nightmare situation for a rookie period.

This team has more tallent than any team he ever played for...
and more talent than any college team period. Is it a bad situation for a rookie….no doubt, but there are mistakes he is making, and should not be making, and mistakes that would hurt even the most talented team. Rookie mistakes, sure to a point, but I really question where his heart is at sometimes, but maybe I am wrong.
You don't need development time to be a fighter.....
and I just don’t know if he has that in him. Does he have the talent to be a big time QB? I believe he does. Does he have the heart? That is what I question.

This offense will not
turn things around unless we get a front line WR in FA. I’m talking Vincent Jackson, Brandon Lloyd, and/or Dwayne Bowe.
And then we also need a premium WR in the draft. And then we need to fill in with a 2nd/3rd tier WR like Matt Willis and Jerome Simpson.
Im not sold on Britton and I really hate watching Whimper play.
The O-line needs another infusion just like the Rackley pick. I pray that Khan has about $60,000,000 burning a hole in his pocket.
He really was awful tonight
It was truly like he wasn’t even there, and I’m not exaggerating at all.
Britton is garbage and should not
Take up a valuable roster spot next year. As for Rackley, I’m not sold on him either. But I agree with you that the O line needs a major infusion of talent. Unfortunately, we’re currently stuck with Gene, so don’t set the expectations to high.
Defense was better this year
Before the injuries got out of control. He deserves credit for that, no? And he gets credit for fixing the defense in a year, I think your comment is a bit pre-mature. The offense may or may not get fixed but using the defense as an indicator all hope of fixing it is not lost
by JohnnyBiceps on Dec 16, 2011 3:16 PM EST up reply actions
He fixed the defense with free agents
not with draft picks. He is going to need to do the same thing with the offense. We wouldn’t be in this position offensively if Gene didn’t bring in players that were other teams castoffs or draft players that needed 2 or 3 years to determine if they could even play at this level, When you are trying to find starters you don’t have that luxury. This year’s WR position is last years Safety position when it was a revolving door of nobody’s. My concern is that he seems to be willing to repeat past history again and again without a track record of success.
Jaguars fan from day 1
He fixed it by spending on free agents. He fixed the worst safeties in the NFL, which were “his” guys that he basically forced to being starters.
then we agree he fixed it
I don’t care if it’s fixed through the draft, through free agency, or through witchcraft as long as it’s fixed. Point is, we have a solid defense, last year we were the worst in the league. Is it not reasonable to think there’s a chance the GM can do it on the other side of the ball?

receiver talk is useless
until we get a line worth anything. The falcons were getting pressure with a four man rush. It doesn’t matter who your receivers are if you can’t block 4 people.
We need both desperatly
It would be so nice to have someone who could actually catch the ball. Does 4 drops tonight sound about right?
Stop this Dwayne Bowe bullshit..
Please! I dont wanna somebody else trash mann. We will be picking in the top 5 or 10 this year. Go get the damn playmaker you deserve. Picking up players like Bowe and Lloyd is the prime example of way we’ve been so bad for so long.
Houston's#1JagsFan
How is that an example of anything
When have the Jags went out and got a Stud FA WR in their prime? The answer is never.
by Sylvester.The.Jaguar.fan on Dec 16, 2011 10:12 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
I live in KC now, and I’ve seen him play a lot. Bowe would be a definite upgrade. He doesn’t have the burning speed to be a real deep threat (draft that), but his ability to make tough catches and find soft spots in zones would help this offense out a lot. I agree with you about Jackson and Lloyd though, they’re Porter-like cancers.
I don't know how Lloyd is a cancer
I’ve never read anything to even suggest that. He’s always gone with the company line in interviews and I don’t think he’s ever been in trouble.
And I never mentioned anything about Desean Jackson. I wouldn’t say he’s a cancer, but he was worth the 2nd round pick he garnered for sure.
I didn't say just sign Bowe
I say sign Bowe and a premium WR in the draft. Frankly no rookie is gonna have enough of an impact next year to make us an above passing team. We need a WR with some experience, and frankly there aren’t a lot of options. I say we get something rather than nothing.
Ewdtrey.....
I always really respect your opinion, but I am not convinced that the top notch WR will fix the problem. I really am having issues with Blaine as a leader. Yes the receivers have let him and the team down, but don’t freakin cry about and go in a shell feeling sorry for yourself Blaine, and that is what I truly see happening. That needs to stop!
I keep saying that he wasnt drafted to be the
Guy this year but no one listens. Lol. He wasnt ready and the team said as much.

My problem...
Is that I agree that he needs a year to develop his QB skills, to fine tune them. I don’t think the development year is to find the will to win, and I question that in him. I hope I am wrong.
Where is the doubt about his will to win coming from?

I get what you're saying
And usually I’m more patient with players and etc. And my stance on this is that, even if Gabbert isn’t the guy, we still need a WR to take pressure off of MJD and any future QB. And if we can spend money and draft picks to get WR’s, I say the sooner the better. Why? That way we can know sooner if we need to replace Gabbert.
So even if a top notch WR doesn’t fix the problem, we added more talent and we figure out what really is the problem.
on the bright side
if we’d shut them out in the first half, we’d have tied them

we need wide receivers and a o line, but when Blaine had time to throw he made some really nice throws
I agree
I don’t know if I’m on the right track here, but I kept thinking Drew Bledsoe tonight when I was watching Blaine. Bledsoe was certainly more aware in the pocket, but he and Blaine both make really great and tough throws when there is no one near them.
I've always thought Blaine reminded me of Bledsoe
by Jags85 on Dec 16, 2011 2:27 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
Io me its good, but frustrating
that he reminds me of Bledsoe. Drew was a really nice QB, but Blaine seems to have physical tools the Drew never had with his feet. The problem is that he doesn’t seem to know how to use them, add to the fact that his pocket presence/footwork is atrocious and you have a homeless mans version of Drew Bledsoe.
The positives are of course that he has a flippin’ cannon, he can throw it with the best guys in the league on a practice field no doubt. He also does generally play a really smart game in terms of where hes going with the ball. His footwork is as troubling as ever though, tonight he had 4 instances I counted where he just was awful in that regard. If his game is a Drew Bledsoe pocket passer then thats fine, but he can’t be any good at it without having good footwork and pocket presence.
And again, everyone on offense not named Maurice Jones Drew or the seldom used Greg Jones just sucks. Its hard to put all the blame on Blaine when his WRs cant get open or catch and his OL plays matador with John Abraham. We are in a bad situation come offseason.
Despite his physical tools
Blaine isn’t so hot there either.
I don't think this is on Blaine. I have been drinking.
But. WR’s and a RT that is Whimpy at being a Guy. Both of them are sucky. A D that has been desemated by injury and a Atlanta team that is pretty good and very good a home.

I agree but last night blaine really was under more duress then he has been all year
One thing that really erks me too is everyone talks about how last year we set the jags receiving. TD record has any one thought about who caught most of them in one target it was lewis he disapeard this year completly hasnt caught one TD and the opertunities hes had he droped. Also im gona give credit to DG he was more mobile then i think we gave him credit for. He masked a glaring hole at the passing line we all knew it wasnt great but with DG in the moved better and extended plays better but they may come with time for blaine. And let me tell you i couldnt stand DG and im glad hes gone bc he made more bone head throws then ive seen blaine make this year. Now with that said we need a new RT and damit get the kid a viable set of WRS. I honestly dont think any qb rookie mostly like some of you want to cut bait and redraft would succeed around here with this line and receivers. Blaine was thrown into the worst imaginable posistion for a rookie.

Gabbert hasn't given up
but I don’t think he trusts his teammates. I don’t completely blame him for that, but it definitely exacerbates the problem in games like yesterday.
So, better pocket presence
can translate into better play and help make up for other deficiencies? I agree nothing would have helped last night but he is not doing anything to help himself in the pocket.
Jaguars fan from day 1
I don't think last night was a great example
I counted 3 times where he made a bad move in the pocket, but it seemed like there were at least 9 times that where there was no pocket to speak of thanks to the play of the OL.
I'm with you as far as last night went.
There wasn’t a pocket on a number of plays but in talking about the season as a whole I would have hoped this aspect of his game would have gotten better as the season progressed. Just getting better at throwing the ball away rather than running into a sack would be an improvement and I just haven’t seen it yet.
Jaguars fan from day 1
I can see that
The season as a whole he hasn’t been very good at all with his pocket presence nor his awareness under pressure.
He was terrible last night, no doubt.
No way it’s all on him though. Abraham abused both Monroe and Whimper last night. The recievers created zero seperation even when Gabbert ran play action.
Last night was not the “slightest bit of pressure”, but I get your point. He struggles immensely against the blitz.
Gabbert didn't play like a rookie...
He played like a college player. Next year, he’ll probably play like a rookie. Or…
We could go out and get someone in the draft who is actually qualified to play quarterback in the NFL. I’m on team RG III. Never liked Gabbert, but this game really pushed me over the edge.

While making excuses are bad
how would you feel if you were an NFL rookie QB with no WR, an OLine that can’t protect you and your TE is just now learning how to catch again. This was the worst situation for him. And don’t you dare show Dalton, Newton, Locker or Ponder. Dalton has AJ Green, Newton has Smith and Olsen, Ponder has Harvin and Shiancoe. Gabbert has MJD and that is it.
Dalton and Newton were expected to start while Gabbert was expected to sit a year. He got minimal first team snaps in what little offseason we had.
Not even Luck could come in and do well.
Give him one more year and then compare.
by Casey Byron Adkins on Dec 16, 2011 1:52 AM EST up reply actions
Having played on good teams
and bad teams, I know there is too much blame put on QB’s when a team is bad.
I seem to recall
that Gabbert got first team snaps during most of the offseason. He was getting more reps than McCown, and then Garrard hurt his back early. Also, he has been starting since the 3rd game. I know the offseason was short, but it was short for everyone, and Blaine was never treated like a 2nd or 3rd stringer in the offseason. The only valid excuse for him is that he started off less ready than the other rookie QBs – and that makes you wonder about the draft pick and about the QB decisions made early this year.

I’m on team Barkley although I’d take RG III over Gabbert.
Maybe Gabbert only needs time, if so he can sit behind a pro-ready QB or compete with him for the starter or convert him to tight end. O-line and WRs are crap but they’re nowhere near as important as QB look at Manning and Brady. Get a QB first round a WR second round a WR in free agency.

Gabbert’s ballcap makes him look like a skateboarder and not a QB. He needs to improve his image, if not his play.

Gabbert Is Too Young and Inexperienced
Gabbert is the youngest QB in the NFL. He may be 21 years old. He played two seasons in college and had an injury shortened senior season in high school. He is still learning how to play QB at its most basic level, much less like a seasoned NFL QB. Gene Smith took a big chance in drafting a boy to play a man’s position. It will take Gabbert years, not games, to catch up to his competition at QB.

Why was Whimper starting in the first place?
Almost every time Cameron Bradfield has come in for Whimper, he’s been pretty good. I know he got beat by Abraham badly tonight, but usually Bradfield does pretty well.
At least Bradfield is young and has a chance at improving
Whimper is nothing but a stop-gap and a bad stop gap at that, I’d rather a young guy perform just as poorly and gain experience.
Should have kept tony pashos lol

I was never a fan of cutting
Pashos. But he became injury prone after getting cut. Went on IR soon after signing with the 9ers.
I’d prefer letting the QB develop, which is more important, with a RT like Whimper. Yeah he sucked last night, but overall he’s still better than Bradfield. I’d rather let him develop in the off season, because he’s got a long way to go.
If it is the play I remember, I think Bradfield forced the DE to the outside and Gabbert ran straight into him. Not Bradfield's fault.

I can defend Blaine on alot of fronts but he has to protect the football better than that if he wants to start in the NFL. He turns the ball over too much via fumbling. I do not want Manning.....
and I do not think he would come here, but the thought does beg a very interesting question…..If nothing else changed much, how would Sir Manning perform, and how would the Jags perform, with this group of personnel on the field? We will never know, but it sure would be interesting to see what Peyton could do with the same o-line and the WR’s.
Why would you not want Manning?
I agree there is 0% chance he comes here if he leaves the Colts at all, but hes freakin’ Peyton manning. If the Colts can go from a 12 win team to a 0 win team just by missing him then I suspect we would be quite a bit better as well even with our personnel at WR and OL.
I think it would be interesting to find out what he could do....
and I agree we probably would be better. And yes…I should want Manning…..that was pretty stupid of me to say!
As bad as our OL is
it’s still better than the Colts OL. But their system and WR’s help mask that some.
we do not want Vincent Jackson
He’s Jerry Porter 2.0. I live in San Diego, Jax fans would hate this guy. He’s a little prima donna that is cancerous to an organization. His effort is truly questionable. He’d look to Jax to get paid and that’s it. Oh, and he doesn’t talk to the media at all, so when his play implodes he disappears like lil bitch
by JohnnyBiceps on Dec 16, 2011 3:32 PM EST up reply actions
I agree he's a bit of
a prima donna, but he’s the lesser of 2 evils when comparing him to a lot of the other playmaking WR’s. And frankly drafting a WR next year, no matter who he is, isn’t going to fix the problem.
From an outsider's point of view,
I would say Gabbert has been dealing with a very unfair situation for a rookie QB.
Everyone has known from the opening game that Del Rio was a dead man walking, which had to affect the entire coaching staff. The O line has indeed looked terrible, but how much of that is coaching? There’s really no way to know what’s what in the middle of such turmoil. Gabbert was dropped into this mess and expected to perform with no real receiving threats. The results were entirely predictable.
On the other hand, having now watched him play 3 full games, I must say he appears to have serious flaws in his game. He doesn’t seem to have much personal presence as a leader, either. It is still hard for me to see what the Jags saw in him worth trading up for; he looks like a project, at best. I could see the Jags trying again for a QB in the next draft. I don’t think you would be disappointed in RG III; he’s the real deal.
Good luck with your new owner, Jags fans. Here’s hoping he lets smart football people run the team. (I don’t know if y’all would agree Gene Smith is "smart football people ". Maybe you’ll get a change there, too.)

To be honest...
…he has it physically. He’s big, he can move, and he has a big arm. Well at least he did before he came here. I didn’t study him while he was in school, but later on in his collegiate career he seemed fine. Maybe the system he played in hid his weaknesses? I just don’t know what happened to him. I’m almost sure if he was throwing and moving like this when the Jags were scouting him, we wouldn’t have drafted him. We for sure wouldn’t have reached to get him.
Anyway, I wasn’t mad at the pick and not a lot of people around here were. Garrard needed to go and Blaine was one of the best QB prospects in the draft considering nobody thought Cam Newton would be doing what he’s doing. In the end, it didn’t matter who we picked they weren’t gonna be successful here. You saw our offensive line play. There wasn’t a QB in the draft that could deal with that.
Welcome back to Earth, Blaine
I wondered where the QB I watched all season went this past Sunday. I can’t even say it was all him last night as there was pressure from all sides. Even Monroe was getting whipped by Abraham. It’s so sad that the defense will totally buy play action and nobody is open when Gabbert does his roll out.
Even Dillard let me down last night and he was the only ray of hope I had for the WR corp.
Next Man Up?
After Dillard showed his lack of progress last night, who is the next man up? Ditto Chastin West. We are running out of players. I think we are stuck with these guys for the duration of the seaseon. At least, we have a next man up for Whiffer.
At least there are only 2 more games left in the season.
I like to watch.

Give me a Break!!!!!
Following the win last Sunday this site was quite. Very few of you had anything to say. Now following a loss all the experts show up. Judging from these comments I would say most of you are 25 or younger. You rush to judgement and possess zero patients. Also a lot of you are simply regurgitating the same crap i hear from the talking heads. Do some research and form your own opinion before you defend someone else’s.
I’m afraid there are no quick fixes to our teams issues its going to take time. Is Blaine going to work out? Only time will truly tell. If you can sit there and tell me he is a bust then please give me the lotto numbers too while your at it.

Keep your heads up. We know how it feels. BTW i heard they were gonna start selling slurpies, lotto tix and sexual stamina pills at the Jags stadium when Khan takes over, any truth to this?
Rule #1: Double tap.
Really though,
Why didn’t y’all get Tebow. Makes no sense, the place would have been packed and they would likely be winning right now. Who did you guys get that draft?

We had a fullback

As hard as it was...
to watch, this is what happens when you go up against a playoff caliber team and you have 27 guys on IR, a rookie quarterback and an offense that is struggling as a whole.
I just really wish MJD would’ve made it to the endzone on that big run of his.
His 317 touches coming into this game didn't help him on that run.
I just worry that we are running him into the ground.

He's unstoppable
I think he’s really underrated in terms of durability. Having only missed 2 games due to injury in 6 years has to be the best number in the league amongst RB’s that have gotten at least 200 touches a year. And I think if we were still in playoff contention that number might have been zero games missed due to injury.
Just looking at this year Forte has gone down for more. Peterson has gone down for more. Fred Jackson is on IR. Lynch and Gore have been injury prone. Foster missed time early in the season.
Rice and Chris Johnson have been healthy but Rice was a part time player his whole career until this year and Johnson might as well missed games this season.
