I've been wondering.......

I've been wondering: What are our chances of getting someone like Troy Polamolu in the draft to take Mathis' place? I think that with our defense healthy with our current players we are 5th in the NFL, replacing Mathis with a Troy Polamalu could take us to #1 or #2 in terms of defense. If we had a Polamolu this year, we could be sitting at 8-6 right now: beating Carolina in week 3, the Bengals in week 5, Steelers in week 6, Texans in week 12.

so you want to replace a cornerback with a safety?

maybe we could draft a darelle revis type to be that dominant pass rusher off the egde.

I've already told this guy before...I don't think he gets it. (said something along these lines in a comment a few weeks ago)...smh

I said someone like Polamolu.

It's All good!

by Hurricane8765 on Dec 21, 2011 1:35 PM EST up reply actions

but what does that mean

polamalu would probably be a mediocore CB at best. His game is not that of a CB, it is that of a safety.

Rather say you want a Revis or an Asmougha etc.

by Jagsrok9008 on Dec 21, 2011 2:05 PM EST up reply actions

I didn’t say that I want Polamalu himself. I want a CB that is hard-hitting like Polamalu, rather than a CB like Mathis who hand tackles.

It's All good!

Let's

Make Coleman the starter. He has played well, and Mathis is 33. hand tackles, and has an injured knee. He will likely never be his old self again.

It's All good!

he is better suited as a nickelback

hows about either mathis return since he is not that bad or if a guy like Claiborne falls to our pick, select him and start him?

by Jagsrok9008 on Dec 21, 2011 2:31 PM EST up reply actions

Much better as a nickel corner.

Coleman is an awesome rotational player, but would be slaughtered as an exery downs outside corner imo. I was just saying he’s a hard hitter, not advocating making him a starter.

by aibtureman on Dec 21, 2011 3:06 PM EST up reply actions

I like Claiborne in the first.

Admittedly, I am caught up in the WR frenzy though.

by aibtureman on Dec 21, 2011 3:07 PM EST up reply actions

the WR thing is like this to me

Blackmon >>>> the rest

So, if he is there at our pick which figures to be top 6 or 7 then I would consider it, but otherwise there is going to be a better pick than the next best WR

I can't get on board with Blackmon.

If he somehow grew 4 inches, I say do it.

I'm not a Blackmon apologist

but the dude can jump higher than Plaxico (as evidenced by the Sports Science episode with Blackmon), so the height is not the thing that bothers me. I just don’t see that AJ Green top 5 pick skill.

by CheapSeat on Dec 21, 2011 7:54 PM EST up reply actions

Jumping high

is not the same thing as being tall.

by Ewdtrey on Dec 22, 2011 7:36 PM EST up reply actions

well that was poorly explained

I would prefer a CB with excellent coverage ability and who “hand tackles”

Why do most people want Mathis gone?

Sine he has been hurt, you see how thin we are in the secondary. He said its not about money and he wants to retire a Jacksonville Jaguar. Yes, Jaguars need to bring in young talent at CB, but you never can have too many good corners in this league.

If Mathis is willing to sign a reasonable contract, I'd love to have him back, but

we can’t pay him what he would have been worth before tearing his ACL. It may sound harsh, but we could get a decent rotational Mathis for a bargain. I feel terrible for the guy though. He’ll forever be a Jag.

No doubt

he’s not worth as much post injury. Personally I would just put him on PUP to start the year. Let him get really healed. I don’t want another Aaron Kampman situation. It’s all or nothing.

by Ewdtrey on Dec 22, 2011 7:38 PM EST up reply actions

Troy Polamalu is special

You just don’t go out and get a Troy Polamalu. You luck out finding a guy like him. Finding a player like him is like drawing a straight flush

Take stock in your lives, but leave your livestock alone

Seriously

You seem really confused…but even if you weren’t. Who the hell wouldn’t want Troy Polamalu.

Hey guys! We should get a Calvin Johnson and an Aaron Rodgers in this year’s draft. Sound like a plan?

by CheapSeat on Dec 21, 2011 7:56 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

You want a guy who makes an impact on defense like Troy Polamalu but who plays CB like Rasean Mathis right?

If thats your question then I think the answer is LSUs defensive back Tyrann Mathieu, who passes the “holy crap” test to me. I don’t know where hes slotted to go, but he looks like a play maker who can play a few positions in the defensive backfield.

I’d rather get a WR though…and I’d like to bring Rasean back for another year if the price is right.

by jstnblke41 on Dec 22, 2011 6:01 AM EST reply actions

Mathieu is too small to be an effective CB

he is lik 5’8 and if he were to be a #1 guy he would be seeing a lot of 6’+ guys and it is going to be hard to effectively and consistently cover guys 4+ inches taller than you

by Jagsrok9008 on Dec 22, 2011 9:13 AM EST up reply actions

he will not be outjumping #1 receviers by 4 inches

just imagine putting him up against Andre Johnson or Kenny Britt. Good luck to him!!

by Jagsrok9008 on Dec 22, 2011 10:25 AM EST up reply actions

He wouldn't...

have to out jump them, as in jump higher than them. He just has to be able to get up high enough to contest for the ball. I know nothing about the guy though.

by kjones407 on Dec 22, 2011 12:20 PM EST up reply actions

Good point

He does look like the best playmaker to me on the defensive side though, you might be right about his shortcomings but I wouldn’t bet against a guy that plays as tough as him.

by jstnblke41 on Dec 22, 2011 5:34 PM EST up reply actions

If I can afford the pick it costs

to get him as a NB, I would totally draft him.

by Ewdtrey on Dec 22, 2011 7:40 PM EST up reply actions

Just saw he is a true sophmore as well

If he can duplicate his success next year then I would take him regardless of height, he might not be able to consistently cover Andre Johnson but I bet he could make a big impact.

by jstnblke41 on Dec 22, 2011 5:37 PM EST up reply actions

not eligible for this draft either
