With that being said, here is my take on the way Gene Smith is building. Gene is far from a dumb GM and he realizes two things: One - he has to hit on his picks & two - he needs players that will make an impact on his team. So based on what I have seen the last two years, Gene will get the players who he feels will make that impact regardless of what the media or any one else thinks.
For instance if you look at the Tyson pick and you ignore the rumors surrounding that Miami wanted Tyson. He was predicted to go in the second round, but Gene knew that his guy may not be available at that point. He saw Tyson as an impact player and could not trade back and get value so he picked his man anyway. After the pick the media kept saying how it was a reach and Gene responded "I don't care what you think," which is the right call and right way to be. The media is not going to make the Jaguars a wining franchise, Gene is.
But he has to hit on all his picks and by doing so he will do whatever is needed to get there. So reaching according to the media standards Gene may continue to do, because ultimately it does not matter where someone was drafted. What does matter if we win our division and make constant strides in the playoffs to get to the ultimate goal of wining a super bowl. On the same token though, other GM's are not stupid and see what Gene is doing and because Gene and his staff drafts this way are unlikely to want to trade picks with Gene for a fair price. Cause no one likes to be out smarted.
I believe that is the main reason Philadelphia made a trade with Dallas and not the Jags is they wanted to get a more lopsided deal to work in their favor and felt they would not get it from Gene, so went a different route, figuring the Jags might take their targeted player and knowing which direction Dallas was going. I believe Gene is getting noticed rather quickly. Other teams don't feel they have an answer to detour Gene's building process, because they have no idea where he might target next. A man not afraid to reach to get his BAP is unpredictable. Don't be surprised if Gene out of the blue come draft day picks up a guy who had an off the field issue. And no other gm figured he would because of his high character motto.
You have to remember the d line coach had issues himself and Gene gave him another chance. Well you can debate and say well Gene didn't hire him. But look who is boss of who Gene or JDR. So I see Genes BAP not based on need but who HE and HIS staff feel can make an impact at the present time regardless of where others feel should be drafted. If you need more proof on this point. Lets look at the Cox trade. What team truely had him in the third round as the BAP at that time? Once again I feel Gene said to himself and other staff we want this kid. And he can't be had the following round so lets pull the plug now and get our man. So there is no doubt in my mind this year we will see the same trend continue. And as long as Genes picks continue to be hits and not misses the town is looking at something truely special. And a playoff contender in the near future with year in and year out staying power.
So in conclusion you have to think based on the last two drafts that Genes and his staff BAP is not the same BAP over all the NFL believes. And I love it. Cause a man that knows his stuff and ignores the gossip and who is red hot at the time is a guy who is doing things the right way. Cause ultimately do high profile picks mean anything when it comes to wining a super bowl or constantly in the playoff picture? With Gene Smith you may not agree with all his picks or where he picks them. But come time during the season you know the effect of picking the right players to get the job done. And that is what truly matters.
