I saw that this was rumored on walterfootball.com. If it's true, I think GM Gene should seriously consider trading down.
As we know, the quality of players drops off significantly after the early rounds. We could give the Pats back to back picks early in the draft and grab an additional second rounder.
If you look at the NFL Draft Point Value Chart, one scenario is this: We trade the Pats our 1st round pick (no. 16, 1000 points) and our 3rd round pick (no. 80, 190 points) and 4th round pick (no. 119, 68 points) for the Pats' 1st round pick (no. 28, 660 points) and their first 2nd round pick (no. 33, 580) and maybe a fifth or sixth round pick (this is all very hypothetical since the official order for all seven rounds has not been released). A fifth round pick from the Pats would be about 29 points.
Pats receive: three picks, 1268 points
Jags receive: three picks, 1269
Almost dead even. First of all, imagine getting Christian Ponder late in the first round (great value there) before other QB hungry teams start hounding after him in the early 1st round (Bills, Bengals, Titans, etc.). Then imagine what we could do with two second round picks! We could land some quality defensive players in that area of the draft. This would be a dream scenario. Maybe the deal is already being worked out.
Can anyone tell me if they have heard something similar to this rumor? If so, where? Please post a link.
