Official Mock Draft Thread 4.0

Good lord, people...this thing drops off the recommended FanPosts section and we've already got three mock draft threads.  I guess I have to be more diligent in making sure we have one of these up at all times.

Star-divide

This post's purpose is to be a gathering point for ALL mock drafts.  Feel free to post Jaguars seven-round mock drafts OR full-round mock drafts.  Basically, anything mock-related should go in here.

The Jaguars will be picking as follows:

1st round (16)
2nd round (49)
3rd round (80)
4th round (114)
4th round (121)
5th round (147)
6th round (182)

The Jaguars did NOT receive picks from Cincinnati or Green Bay in the Reggie Nelson or Anthony Smith trades.

Anyway, post your mocks in here and comment on others' mocks in here as well, and let's try to keep the Recent FanPosts section from getting too cluttered.  SB Nation is perfect for threads like these because your posts won't be lost in the thread; people usually navigate around the threads by pressing Z to move between unread posts.  If you guys want to keep this visible, rec the thread to keep it in the Recommended FanPosts section.  Mock it up!

fair enough my new round 1 can go here

1 Carolina Blaine Gabbert QB I don’t like this pick at all, but I think it is going to be the pick. Claussen is not the answer at QB, and so the Panthers look to address the most important hole on the team. They decide to go Gabbert over Newton because Newton has too many question marks.
2 Denver Marcel Dareus DT John Fox knows what is ideal when it comes to defense. Dareus is an ideal football player who should be a force at DT for years to come in the NFL.
3 Buffalo Cam Newton QB Fitzpatrick could be the long term answer at QB in my opinion, but Buffalo does not share in my opinion. Therefore, they go with the one year wonder at Auburn who could shape up to be a real stud at the professional level, although it is a very shaky and improbable (in my opinion) could.
4 Cincinnati A.J. Green WR It is either Patrick Peterson or A.J. Green. I went with the star WR because I feel that Cincinnati does not want to offend Jonathan Joseph by bringing in a young guy to take over at #1 CB.(props to Walter football for pointing that out- kind of seems right that Joseph would go apes#!t and refuse to resign in Cincy)
5 Arizona Von Miller OLB Arizona would love a QB but value is not there, so they go with a guy who fills a need and should be a really good player at the next level.
6 Cleveland Patrick Peterson CB Cleveland lucks out and gets the best prospect in the draft at pick 8. Adding PP to their secondary immediately turns it into one of the best young groups in the league with him and Haden.
7 San Francisco Prince Amukamara CB Niners would have loved Peterson but are not distraught that they get Amukamara. Prince should allow the Niners to immediately upgrade their entire defense, since they are already pretty strong in the front 7.
8 Tennessee Nick Fairley DT Fairley just seems to me like the type of guy Tennessee would select, regardless of the talent level. Pair that up with the need for DT in Tennessee and the fact that he is quite talented, and the pick just makes a ton of sense
9 Dallas JJ Watt DE Dallas really could afford to upgrade their secondary but there is no match for this pick, so they upgrade their front 7 on D and select the rising Badger who is supposedly supposed to be the next bog thing at 3-4 DE.
10 Washington Da’Quan Bowers DE Orakpo was the only Redskin to get >2.5 sacks last season. That should not sit well with the team, so they go out and grab a premier talent at the DE position.
11 Houston Robert Quinn DE/OLB Shifting to the 3-4, Houston grabs a very good player to play rush LB and join Mario Williams to make a very good pass rushing tandem.
12 Minnesota Julio Jones WR In all likelihood Sidney Rice is gone, so Minnesota finds his replacement in Julio Jones.
13 Detroit Aldon Smith DE No CB help that fits the pick, so Detroit upgrades their defensive line and makes it an intimidating front with Smith and Suh.
14 St. Louis Muhammad Wilkerson DT/DE No wide receivers means the Rams look at defense. DT is a need and Wilkerson played DT at Temple. The most recent Temple DT to get drafted has proven his worth, and this guy should do the same.
15 Miami Mark Ingram RB I find it hard to believe Miami does not take Ingram if he is available when they pick. He just makes a ton of sense on numerous levels most notable that he is extremely talented and Miami had their RBs set for FA after the season.
16 Jacksonville Christian Ponder QB In case anyone needs me to explain, here it is. Ponder was very highly regarded prior to this past season. He was essentially a consensus first rounder. All the questions that arose have essentially been answered during the workout season. Ponder is extremely capable of becoming a franchise QB an leading an NFL offense for the next 1-2 decades. Genes Smith realizes this and therefore will have Ponder extremely high on his board, to the point he is without a doubt the election at the pick.
17 New England Cam Jordan DE/DT New England gets a very talented football player who along with Vince Wilfork will truly be able to anchor that defensive line for the foreseeable future.
18 San Diego Tyron Smith OT San Diego ideally does not want to take an offensive lineman at the pick, but given what is available, along with the fact that Tyron Smith is a very gifted player, San Diego takes Smith and strengthens a relatively weak offensive line.
19 New York(NFC) Mike Pouncey OG This pick took me time to internalize and really see why it made more sense than an OT, but it finally became obvious. Mike is very similar to his brother, and a Maurkice Pouncey type player fits extremely well with what the Giants really need in this draft.
20 Tampa Bay Ryan Kerrigan DE It is not a secret that TB needs a DE and Kerrigan has a massive amount of potential, as well as great work ethic
21 Kansas City Phil Taylor NT As I pointed out in my previous mock, Taylor makes sense, and will likely be the pick for the following reasons:a)Pioli looks at Vince Wilfork’s anchoring of NE’s defense b) Haloti Ngata in the playoffs certainly showed KC what an effective NT can do to a defense.
22 Indianapolis Anthony Castonzo OT At this stage it comes down to how you rank you OTs. Castonzo is tops of the remaining guys, so Indy addresses what seems to be their perpetual need, the offensive line.
23 Philadelphia Gabe Carimi OT While Solder MIGHT be better, I just feel like Carimi fits better in Philadelphia, a team that certainly could use an upgrade on their offensive line.
24 New Orleans Adrian Clayborn DE New Orleans could greatly benefit from bringing in a young DE who can be a 3-down guy. Clayborn seems to be just that.
25 Seattle Cory Liuget DT Seattle very possibly takes a QB, but the truth of the matter is I think they choose to address one of their more pressing needs, as Whitehurst seems to be as being capable of leading the offense for some time after Hasselbeck leaves the game. Liuget should be a first rounder and Seattle can use a DT.
26 Baltimore Brooks Reed OLB/DE Brooks Reed epitomizes Ravens’ LB in my opinion. While I am sure fans would disagree, I believe that Reed fits in Baltimore better than Justin Houston
27 Atlanta Justin Houston DE John Abraham is not getting younger, and so Atlanta takes the Georgia native to come in and learn from one of the greats.
28 New England Nate Solder OT New England definitely can look to upgrade heir offensive line, and Solder is a very good player who should be able to come in and contribute somewhere on the line.
29 Chicago Derek Sherrod OT I refuse to explain Chicago taking an offensive lineman.
30 New York(AFC) Akeem Ayers OLB The Jets are literally on the cusp of joining the elite teams in the NFL. One shaky area I noticed this year was the inconsistent pass rush. Ayers, from what I understand, can be a very effective pass rusher, which is a good thing in particular when facing Tom Brady twice a year.
31 Pittsburgh Jimmy Smith CB Jimmy Smith is a lot more talented than people realize. He likely could play the #1 CB spot on close to half of the NFL teams. Pittsburgh has got to be crying out of happiness that a guy of the caliber makes it to 31.
32 Green Bay Cameron Heyward DE/DT After the recent legal troubles of Johnny Jolly, Green Bay decides to look into a young defensive lineman. Heyward is precisely that. While inconsistent, when this guy is on, he can be flat out dominating.

Easy now...

I would hope that Ponder works out, but 1 to 2 decades? Before he’s thrown a pass in the NFL? Being that most QBs don’t make it that long, I’d hope he produces for a few years first, then worry about the 2 decades thing.

by packerman on Mar 29, 2011 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Let's get this started off right.

1st round (16) Adrian Clayborn, DE Iowa
2nd round (49) Johnny Patrick, CB Southern Miss
3rd round (80) Mason Foster, OLB, Washington
4th round (114) Nathan Enderle, QB Idaho
4th round (121) Austin Pettis, WR Boise State
5th round (147) Chimdi Chekwa, CB/FS Ohio State
6th round (182) OL… maybe Darius Morris, G/T Temple

Not sure if I’m really all in on this one, but I know I want Clayborn and then someone in the secondary in the second. I think Enderle/ Pettis would be a great one-two if it could happen. Chekwa could be a good guy too because he can play corner, but the thought is he might be better suited for safety.

YES

another guy that loves clayborn!

He's gonna be my "I told you so" guy

You know, when in a few years he’s out wrecking people, I’ll get to say I wanted the Jags to take him.

by Brian Levenson on Mar 29, 2011 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I won't insist that he's gonna be the Jaguars' pick

but how can this guy seem like a bust to you? He’s big enough to hold the line, quicker than he looks and, oh yeah, put up good numbers. And past all that, there’s just something about him on film that makes you say “damn.” Someone’s gonna think he’s a 3-4 guy, but I think he can fit in a 4-3 because he turns the corner better than you might expect.

well when i watched him in the bowl game this year i barely noticed him

he did not have a good day at all. that indicates to me that he might struggle at a higher level of competition or on a bigger stage

Can't argue against these

This entire first round makes sense as it’s mostly the names we are all throwing around and guessing about. Yet I don’t see Ponder as a first round pick and I believe the Ravens and Seahawks will address their offensive lines first; the Bears obviously need to protect Cutler better, but who will be at defensive tackle for them? I don’t see the Panthers taking a quarterback, and I believe they and the Bills would trade down in a second if somebody would just phone them….Since Gene Smith has noted that there are a lot of defensive linemen and corners in this draft, perhaps he will surprise us and take linebackers and a safety before getting a rusher later on. Mike Maycock has suggested that the likes of Oregon’s Brandon Bair might even be around by the 6th round.

Bair

is a 43 DT or a 34 DE.

The Perfect Draft - By Dawool haha

1st round (16) – Adrian Clayborn – This guy is an absolute BEAST. He’s big, can hold his own against big tackles, but also he can provide a pass rush. A do-it-all kind of end, plus he can help fill the pass rush need we have
2nd round (49) – Colin Kaepernick – Athletic, good size, can make all the throws. Value meets need as he slowly overtakes Garrard by season’s end as our team’s QB
3rd round (80) – Kelvin Sheppard – He is a LB. He will tackle a lot of guys. Team him up with Daryl and resign Morrison/Durant and our LB’s will make an unexpected leap.
4th round (114) – Robert Sands – Stud.
4th round (121) – Chimdi Chekwa – Our secondary would benefit with having a blind midget out there, and this guy can play.
5th round (147) – Greg Salas – More depth to our WR core
6th round (182) – Tyrod Taylor – Who knows? Worth a swing at with a late round pick, he’s interesting.

by Dawool Huh on Mar 29, 2011 9:21 PM EDT reply actions

Love this mock.

And its plausible. Idk about Taylor in the 6th tho, I can’t see him having more value than some of the corners that will be available then. But still, really nice mock.

by Sylvester.The.Jaguar.fan on Mar 29, 2011 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah i tried not too reach too much except for Sands

I doubt he’d be available then, and Taylor. He is just so interesting ! He’s so athletic we could change him to corner if we needed to haha

Taylor Mays, Darnell Bing, Josh Barrett…huge safeties seem to consistently fail at the NFL level. I’m not sure I trust Sands.

He wasn’t nearly quick enough and couldn’t turn his hips. I highly, highly doubt he will be good at any point. I have to watch crappy 49ers games on TV here, so I’ve seen him play plenty. Very, very unimpressed.

Mays does look terrible.

But I have to give anybody coached by Singletary the benefit of the doubt..lol. Sands is much more of a coverage guy than those guys were. Most of them were pretty much just hard hitting guys, He can and will come up and hit but thats not his entire game.

by Sylvester.The.Jaguar.fan on Apr 1, 2011 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

i dont know what really makes Taylor Mays suck so much

but i am a huge WVU fan and i know that Sands is very fast, has decent enough hands, can tackle, and can come into the box and get a sack every now and then. Ive read some things saying he could be a LB in the NFL but i think he will be successful as a Safety.

If we traded back to the mid 20's I'd be all about it

but yeah I’m definitely with rws on this one. Sheard would not be BAP at 16 overall.

by Brian Levenson on Mar 30, 2011 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions

sheard not BAP at 16

that’s for sure. although sheard, robert quinn, and aldon smith are the only true edge rushers early in this draft, there’s no way gene smith drafts a guy with an assault record, particularly after passing on carlos dunlap last year for a mere dwi. although if smith had drafted dunlap we would not be having this discussion. he likes high character guys, or boyscouts. unfortunately we have a lot of boyscouts who can’t rush the passer or defend anybody in the secondary.

by The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh on Mar 30, 2011 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Lots of people

passed on Dunlap and I’m pretty sure most of it didn’t have to do with a DWI. I think it had more to do with a lack of production and effort on the field.

by Ewdtrey on Mar 30, 2011 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Sacks in 2010/ Carlos Dunlap/10--Our boy Tyson 4

Well, I guess the numbers don;’t lie: Dunlap had 10 sacks to 4 for Tyson; sad that we have to to make yet another pick for a defensive end when we could
have taken Dunlap…..Or Earl Thomas for that matter which we are now desperately trying to make up for with some playmaking safeties…

by The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh on Mar 30, 2011 8:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Why don't people understand

that DT and DE are two different positions with two different jobs?

by packerman on Mar 30, 2011 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

No misunderstanding on ends and tackles

No one is misunderstanding the distinction between a defensive end and a defensive tackle, unless it’s a GM who drafted a defensive end from Cal who ran a 4.87 40 and turned him into a defensive tackle. Nothing matter with that; Alualu had a great rookie season. And the Jags got younger for a cheaper price at tackle. But what made other GMs aghast was that for a difference of under $2 million (the difference between John Henderson’s $5 million salary and the $3.4 million or whatever they are paying Alualu), they could have kept Henderson a little longer and either gotten a speedy rusher such as Everson Griffen or Jason Pierre-Paul, or a playmaking safety in Earl Thomas, as the writer above suggests…just saying…Alualu’s Cal teammate, by the way, DE Cameron Jordan, was considered to have a 4.90 40 time until he ran a 4.78 at the combine, which is why I would prefer Aldon Smith or Adrian Clayborn at that 16th spot.

by Hansen Alexander on Mar 31, 2011 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe

but they won’t get the production from Henderson for the next 5-10 years that they’ll be getting from Alualu. One year of similar production isn’t a reason not to move on. And I’m sick of people comparing sack totals of DTs and DEs and saying that we made a poor selection based on one statistic that isn’t relevant when comparing the two positions.

by packerman on Mar 31, 2011 6:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Fair enough

You’re right that we should not compare sacks to other statistics. Although some of us are entitled to our wish to have had more pressure on the quarterback. No one has remotely suggested that Aluala was a “bad” pick. Mel Kiper’s point, and that of NFL managements was that the pick was a reach and that the Jaguars could have found Aluala in the second round. Of course, we’ll never know for sure. It turned out to be a good pick and, you’re correct, Aluala will be more productive than will Henderson be in his declining years. And in the long run, the Jaguars may be better off in slowly rebuilding both lines. But the timing of taking Aluala in a year in which they were desperately seeking a rusher and secondary help struck many people as odd, particularly with true pass rushers and a playmaking safety staring them in the face at No. 10 last year.
And of course as the year played out we couldn’t put any pressure on the other team’s quarterback and couldn’t catch up with anybody in the secondary.

This kind of slow rebuilding, which you seem to advocate, will make a lot more sense next year if the Jags don’t make the playoffs. In that case it will be a whole new regime, with Smith presumably staying on. And given the many holes that the Jags need to fill, maybe a slower, long term approach is the way to go.

by Hansen Alexander on Mar 31, 2011 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I do advocate the long term thinking,

but I’m just as fickle (unfortunately) and upset when the Jags don’t win as anybody else. I definitely wanted to see more pressure on the quarterback, but given what 2009 gave us, you couldn’t do much worse. I loved the Kampman signing. I think that’s where Gene thought his pressure was going to come from. Then you add Alualu at undertackle, and the pressure is ramped up even more. We did see a lot more pressure on quarterbacks while Kampman was healthy. His presence made a huge difference. I like what the Jags did, and I think that a lot of the moves individually don’t wow many people. But the product as a whole is made better by the aggregate of the moves.

by packerman on Mar 31, 2011 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

A whole better by aggregate

Hey, I like that: “product as a whole is made better by the aggregate of the moves.”

about college production and motor.

by Ewdtrey on Apr 3, 2011 7:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Different look

similar to one I did recently.. changes made according to lockout confusion via free agency which I feel could hurt the Jags ability to fill some holes they were looking to fill via free agency.

1. (16) CB Jimmy Smith (Colorado) – Would force Mathis to the safety position
2. (49) WR Leonard Hankerson – Replacement to fill the void Sims-Walker left
or OLB Brooks Reed – Could replace Durant
3. (80) DeAndre McDaniel – weaker draft for safeties, but #1 ranked SS here
or ILB Greg Jones – Could replace Morrison
4. (114) ILB Kelvin Sheppard – Another possible linebacker replacement
4. (121) QB Pat Devlin – Pegged as a career backup, but has proved he finds what it takes to win
5. (147) QB Tyrod Taylor – Lets roll the dice on two QB’s later in the draft
6. (183) CB Brandon Bing
       or WR Dwayne Harris

Obviously I didn’t address the Defensive End position.. for one, sure the depth is fairly large at the position in this draft. I just don’t feel as though Gene Smith is going to get the guy he wants with the 16th pick for a Defensive End at least. I feel they’ll either leave the position as is or upgrade via free agency whenever that may come.

by chronryan on Mar 30, 2011 12:01 PM EDT reply actions

Thoughts

Too many character concerns on Smith. I mean, come on, arrests, DUIs… we don’t need another Matt Jones.

Reed would be a steal in the second round but there’s no way he falls that far.

by Vicbow on Mar 30, 2011 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions

We will not

draft Hankerson in the second. He doesn’t have great game speed and he has very inconsistent hands.

by Ewdtrey on Mar 30, 2011 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions

really?

Because running a 4.40 on your 40 time is slow right? I know he’s not as fast as he timed in Indy. Here’s my reasoning for the pick though. Hankerson has had an interesting career so far. Led his high school team to three state titles. Had Braylon Edwards like hands in the beginning dropping a lot of balls but worked with a former Miami pro-bowler to improve his game heading into his junior campaign. His hands aren’t like a Vincent Brown.. but he has big-play abilities like Mike Wallace in comparison I think. Garrard could use a guy that you could air the ball out to and have him chase it down. Don’t get me wrong I could list a bunch of other receivers I like in this draft that we could get later. Just looking to fill a void left by Sims-Walker

by chronryan on Mar 31, 2011 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Could

Hankerson improve our situation at WR? Probably.
But I don’t think his value is in the second round. And if you were to ask anyone what Hankerson would run before the combine most all would say he was a 4.55 guy at best and not a 4.43 he ran.

by Ewdtrey on Apr 3, 2011 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Change Tyrod Talyor

For one he’s not comming out this year. Secondly if we should take a second QB why not Ricky Stanzi out of Iowa. Outstanding size with a compact, over-the-top delivery. Played in pro-style offense and is very comfortable operating from underneath center. Good footwork and delivery quickness. Has enough arm strength, and it has improved in recent years. Nice footwork. Athletic enough to sidestep the first wave of pressure. Smart, hardworking and is passionate about the game — is wired the right way, works at his craft and has earned the respect of his teammates. Very humble and quietly competitive. Will play through pain.
Or maybe in the later rounds or undrafted DJK out of Iowa. Good quickness — can shake the jam and shows urgency off the line. Crisp route runner — stems off the line, exhibits good posture and tempo and uses nods and fakes to set up defenders. Sinks his hips and gets into and out of breaks. Does not waste much movement. Played in a pro-style offense and ran a full route tree. Offers versatility as a kickoff returner (see 99-yard TD vs. Ohio State in ’09). Put this with Clayborn and I see a winning combo just like when they were at Iowa. Seemed to find a way to win

Not too sure on exactly where later guys are projected so this is somewhat based off previous mocks

1. (16) DE Cameron Jordan – starts day one at LDE
2. (49) CB/FS Aaron Williams – possible transition guy to safety
3. (80) OG Rodney Hudson – a guy I repeatedly noticed when watching Ponder highlights
4. (114) MLB Colin McCarthy – may need to slide a bit to get here
4. (121) OG John Moffit – more guard depth, made Carimi look better then he is
5. (147) WR Greg Salas – good posession reciever, great hands

Reed, Moore, Gates, Irving, Rackley, Chris Carter likely won’t fall nearly as far as you have them falling.

Here's the absolute BEST (not really) possible situation.

The Jaguars trade pick 16 to the Eagles for pick 23 and an added 3rd round pick (pick 85) so the Eagles can slip in front of the Pats at 17. The Jaguars use pick 23 on QB Christian Ponder.
The Jaguars offer pick 49 and their third round pick, pick 80 to the New England Patriots for the Pats second first round pick, number 28. With pick 28, the Jaguars select CB Jimmy Smith or DE Brooks Reed.
Basically, the end result is we keep all of our original picks from the 3rd round on, and we get two late 1st round picks, which we turn into Ponder and Smith or Reed.

by Brian Levenson on Mar 30, 2011 9:43 PM EDT reply actions

Point breakdowns

Rd 1 pick 16 = 1000 pts, Rd 1 pick 23 = 760 + Rd 3 pick 85 = 165 = 925 points.

Rd 1, pick 49 = 660 pts, Rd 2 pick 49 = 410 + Rd 3 pick 80 = 190 = 600 points.

Hmm, the Jags might have to sweeten it a little bit for the Pats, but it’s fairly even on both trades.

by Brian Levenson on Mar 30, 2011 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Let's get to it....

1st – Ryan Kerrigan, DE……very productive and a very hard worker…gives a 110% every play….will fit well with our D-line…nothing like 4 relentless lineman every down.

2nd – Quinton Carter, FS…….very smart/strong and can play both free or strong safety….hits remind you of Donvan Darius and can be a ball hawk.

3rd – Ras-I Dowling, CB……one of the top defenders in the draft…slips b/c of injuries but worth a shot in the 3rd for a top 50 prospect……and plays like Bob Sanders will hit anything moving with no regard.

4th – Marcus Cannon, OG……huge lineman that is very strong and light on his feet…was a great reason why TCU only gave up a average of…0.75 sacks a game..WOW…he might be gone by the 3rd…(I hope not)…..alternate – Colin McCarthy, LB

4th – Tyrod Taylor, QB…..a very gifted prospect with all the tools and has done nothing but get better each year…..very high upside…there are risk…but I think Gene does his homework on this guy.

5th – Mario Harvey, ILB….a fast riser on alot of teams radar….any guy who put up 21 tkls, 2 sacks, 3 TFL, 5 pass breakups and a forced fumble…all in one game against Tulane this year is worth a shot…put up good production despite playing behind a horrible D-line…I can imagine what he will do behind or D-line.

6th – Bruce Miller, OLB….a real head hunter with a great motor….very strong…there was a report he can bench 225 – 42 times….he is also fast for a OLB and has decent coverage skills and can get better with coaching and in a year or two can become a 3 down OLB.

by 100%real on Mar 30, 2011 10:51 PM EDT reply actions

Upgrades...

The D-line gets a DE for the future to form a Line that will be a force for years to come.
The secondary gets 2 new prospects that can actually tackle and I say still get a FA if possible.
The addition to the O-line will also sore up the interior problems.
The QB gets a prospect that they can develope for the next year or two and groom for the future.
The LB core gets much needed help and depth and also both new prospects are great wrap up tacklers.

WR – can be addressed thru FA….I also like our young prospects,,,except UNDERWOOD…lol

THREE EXCELLENT EXHIBITS

I like all three of these mocks.. Covers all our needs with quality from top to bottom. Exhibit B is particularly interesting because it shows we can get good pass rushers throughout the draft, as Gene Smith has noted, and he likes to draft a couple of players at the same position. Quinn is the best pure edge rusher in this draft; would be fabulous if he fell to us. Arizona’s Ricky Elmore has been rising up the charts though, may have to get him earlier. Quan Sturdivant and Nate Irving should be good linebackers for years to come if they don’t get hurt. Mississippi State’s Pernell McPhee could be a steal if he lasts till the 4th round. I’ve seen some people say Temple’s Jaiquawn Jarrett could turn out be the best safety in this draft someday. I wish I were higher on Sam Acho as I am a Texas grad and saw him play a lot. Just not sure, as smart and hardworking as he is, that he will be able to make the adjustment to the NFL although he has been rising up the charts after doing well in all star games.

Procrastinating, so here it goes:

1st (16): Christian Ponder, QB, FSU
2nd (49): Martez Wilson, LB, Illinois
3rd (80): Colin McCarthy, LB, Miami
4th (114): Deunta Williams, S, UNC
4th (121): Mark LeGree, S, Appalachain State
5th (147): Justin Rogers, CB, Richmond
6th (182): Ryan Jones, CB, NW Missouri State

I tried to look at the Mock One mock draft to see who was available at each of these slots. I took positions of need, but they are all prospects that I like enough to slot them where I drafted them. LeGree might be a bit of a reach, but I figure that Gene Smith has a habit of taking the same position twice in a row and focusing on more small school players in the latter rounds. I sort of forced myself to pick the small school guys, but I think that they are all worthy of a selection. I think that this draft addresses need and helps significantly with depth at three defensive positions. I didn’t address defensive end or the offensive line, but I think those may be areas of focus during free agency.

Updated

Through recent risers and fallers

1. (16) Da’Quan Bowers DE – two of four analysts have Bowers pegged at 16 as he’s falling on most boards. A lot of question marks have been thrown around this guy since him being #1 on most boards at college season’s end. I think he falls with all the questions surrounding him and I think it’s a steal and no brainer for Gene Smith at 16.

2. (49) Rahim Moore FS – Still the top ranked FS through the combine. Safety might not be overly deep of a position in this years draft but its no secret that teams specifically targeted the Jags safety position last season. It’s no only a concern to fill that position but at pick #49, Moore could likely be the BAP. Ras-l Dowling gets honourable mention for possible pick in round 2.

3. (80) Dontay Moch OLB – This guy had a great combine to really rise his stock. There’s a chance he’s gone by this pick, but if he’s available, he’s a pretty sure pick to replace Durant.

4. (114) Greg Salas WR – I think this guy is one of the most underrated WR’s in this years draft.

4. (121) Buster Skrine CB – Small school kid who is getting a lot more looks after his showing at the combine

5. (147) Vincent Brown WR – arguably has some of the best hands among all WR’s in this years draft. Stood out at the senior bowl followed by a decent showing at the combine.
6. (182) Jeron Johnson SS – pushed his stock up after a good combine. The safety position is supposed to be weak but Johnson went under the radar at Boise State. This guy is supposed to be one of the most aggressive tacklers coming out of the position in years having 325 tackles over his college career.

Obviously I didn’t take a QB. The only guys I’d even look at are Andy Dalton, Pat Devlin, or Tyrod Taylor (transition him into a slot receiver). Would have loved to draft another linebacker but it might be tough. Would have even loved to draft a young replacement for Meester or Manuwai, which some forecast we might do.

I think it’s an absolute given that we draft both a defensive end and wide receiver, if not more than one receiver. Otherwise, safeties, linebackers, cornerbacks, quarterbacks, center, or offensive linemen, I think those are all question marks as to what we draft outside the given two positions we must address.

Depending on Bowers injury report
If he’s fine and falls to us he may have an Eben Britton sized chip on his shoulder, which is great for a DE

good thought

some analysts are now saying Bowers could be a late first rounder.. unreal how much people have lost confidence in him. Yea it seems I’m high on receivers I know but we had one of the worst receiving cores and now we’re without MSW. Dillard, Underwood, and Hill will all faulter as no.2 receivers. These guys are inconsistent and injury prone. I’m with you, I wouldn’t mind drafting one receiver and grabbing one in free agency, still some decent names out there.

I really like Taylor because not only is he a quarterback with potential, but scouts have him pegged as a quality slot receiver if qb doesn’t work out. This guy was in the top 5 if I recall for 10m times.

Less realistic(but still somewhat feasible) what I want to happen
1:Da’Quan Bowers DE
2:Colin Kaepernick QB (I would say Ponder but he is almost for sure not going to be there)
3:Bruce Carter OLB
4:Chimdi Chekwa CB
4:Jaiquawn Jarrett SS
5:Austin Pettis WR
6:Mario Harvey ILB
