2011 NFL Draft Recap: Jaguars Draft More Offense Than Defense
"See, told you we were going to get defense," Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio said sarcastically after the team made their final pick. "We saw tremendous value and we were able to acquire a franchise quarterback and a starting interior offensive lineman early in the draft," Del Rio added.
For now, the Jacksonville Jaguars 2011 NFL Draft is finished. They picked Middle Tennessee State defensive back Rod Issac with their final pick of the draft in the 5th round. The Jaguars began the draft with 7 total draft picks and ended it with 5. The Jaguars gave up their 2nd round pick to move up to 10th overall and draft their quarterback of the future Blaine Gabbert.
In the third round, the Jaguars once again traded up to select offensive lineman from Lehigh, Will Rackley. Rackley will add much needed depth to the offensive line, likely at the interior. Rackley played nearly every position on the offensive line in college, but likely will be kicked inside to either guard or center.
The Jaguars had two picks in the fourth round and used those picks on Division III wide receiver from Mount Union, Cecil Shorts III. The team is higher on Shorts than I am, and believe he can potentially be their third receiver right out of the gate. Shorts does fit the mold of a slot wide receiver in 3-reciever sets, however. With the second pick in the fourth round, the Jaguars took Wyoming safety Chris Prosinski. The Jaguars scouted Prosinski's games this year and also had him in for a private visit. It's possible Prosinski could be in the mix for a starting position. "He will compete with Don Carey and wheover else we might have," said Terry McDonough.
With the Jaguars final pick they selected Rod Issac, who they feel can compete right away for the nickelback position. "He's going to contend for the nickelback spot. I'm in that group of people in the building who are excited about tape I saw," Jack Del Rio told reporters.
While drafting more offensive players than defensive players is sure to leave quite a few fans puzzled, given the state of the defense. Terry McDonough addressed that, "We'll be very active in pro free agency."
So, how do you feel about the Jaguars draft?

I like our picks as players, but we did not address all our needs.
Got some work to do in free agency.
I will love this draft if they do in fact go out and pursue some linebackers in FA.
if they find some LB’s that are better than durant or morrison then i will be a happy camper.
We need linebacker and secondary help in free agency. I’ll be very surprised if we do anything offensively in free agency.

I really like this draft.
Now I will hope that Herzlich goes undrafted and we bring him in as UFA (when all this mess gets cleaned up)
Fidelis Ad Mortem
JDR interview on NFLN was good.
Mentioned Gabbert pushing Garrard to raise his game, or take the job with outstanding play – and either way the Jaguars benefit.

What competition!!!
Alfie I think I made myself pretty clear on Carey last year so I won’t waste time. YES HE CAN START…TODAY!

How can we address the team in free agency if we don’t have one? Don’t get my wrong, I liked our draft and follow BAP. I just get the feeling that we’re gonna have the same defense as last year just with these 2 new DB’s.
Ruud and Weddle
Would bring a much-needed facelift. Even if it just improves the nose and crow’s feet.
The last 3 picks
I just don’t like them – at all. For now.

I trust Gene
If he thinks those players will contribute to the team, then I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.
You can't reason with unreasonable people.
If you ain't first, you're last.
But a
Devon House or a Tyler Sash cannot be contributors? Greg Jones in 5th round is worse prospect then Isaac? I respect Gene but this is just…not right.

Difference of opinion
Only time will tell.
Just to be clear
I had favorites at every pick, and GM Gene didn’t pick any of them.
This might be a cop-out, but at the end of the day, I follow these players as a hobby. They get paid to be right… and will get fired if they are wrong.
Completely true
I have never had a favorite picked when i wanted him.
Thank God for it because I was hoping so bad for Brady Quinn when we kept on trading back. Gene Smith knows more than I

Is it finally time to draft a QB?
Greg Jones...
blegh, slow and undersized. Never cared for him much as a prospect. Prosinski at least has quite a bit of upside due to his smarts and athleticism, unlike Sash who is not nearly as athletic.
@foryourhandicap
Plus, it would be too confusing
To have two Greg Joneses on the team

Does anyone feel like trading a future pick to get herzlich would be worth it?
He will be a starter in the NFL and I want him on our team. He will get drafted by someone and that would be less money to spend in FA

janoris jenkins
can the jags sign him now that hes been kicked off the gators would be a great pick up as long as he can pass them drug test. unfortantely weed is illegal but he covers better then peterson
Can't sign anybody until this labor mess gets resolved
Besides, Gene isn’t going to sign anybody with a track record like Jenkins.
You can't reason with unreasonable people.
If you ain't first, you're last.
For the price and the upside,
I’d consider him worth the risk. If he screws up off the field, cut him! It’s not like spending a high round pick on a questionable guy in that your not married to him through an expensive contract.
Give him one strike and he’s gone, what do we have to lose?
how do you know what gene would/would not do?
janoris jenkins was an elite cover corner last season and would be well worth the risk, as he could improve the team a ridiculous amount. gene is out to make this team better and if he thinks it would, he would
I would maybe jump back to pick up Herzlich, but that's just me....

We wont know until a couple years from know
what if Gabbert turns out to be a young Troy Aikman???? Rackley looks like a starter and we need youth on the OL…..then we get a WR that has ridiculous production numbers – Mike Thomas did too – and 2 DB’s that sound like John Lynch II and a least a servicibale CB – get a couple LB’s in free agency and aybe a safety and we are in god shape – ….Gabbert is special – I havent seen a QB as big as he is move so athletically since Elway…No way he will be that good but that is what comes to mind – Elway.Aikman…
Chad
totally agree, i cannot see Gabbert not being good; hes the total package and im repping him everywhere, probably buying his jersey..
Seriously, I friggin hated him at Mizzou. Mostly for the same reason I hate Manning with the Colts. Because my favorite team has to play him every year, and he’s damn good. I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this, but he picked up blitzes with the quickness back in college. Then there’s that insane memory of his (great for complex playbooks). He’s money.
janoris Jenkins
needs to stay wayyyyyyy far away from the Jaguars….

over some weed, maybe its what he needs to kick the smallest of problem away from him. i understand we need good character but give him 1 chance 1 mess up and hes out random testing weekly. and undrafted rookie. Its all cheap. cost nothing didnt waste a draft pick nothing. and if he decides to smoke a joint he’s outa here. weve wasted way more time money on way less of a player.
Got caught 3 times and kicked off the team. You think handing him hundreds of thousands is going to help that?
I’m all for giving second chances, but this is beyond. He’s not even eligible to be a UDFA. He has to go through the supplemental draft.

dats kool but dont be so hard on weed he can fix that problem and is going to with some team hes not a thug more like bob marley or ricky williams
Don’t be so hard on weed?

He was arrested 3 times. You have to be bold/ stupid to get arrested twice in six months, he took it even further.

i would have liked us to get quan sturdivant but...ehh
don’t like rod isaac, love the cecil shorts pick
have you actually seen game tape on him? i doubt it
everyone looks like a future beast via highlights. we’ll just have to wait and see if hes the real deal
ive seen a highlight reel and he had a goos solid 5 minutes of great plays.
he showed great speed and tackling along with pretty good ball skills. I’m not saying he will end up working out, but you have to at least see promise in this guy.
i watched it too and he seemed good at times
and btw its only about 2 and a half minutes of gametape, they show each highlight twice from a different angle
haha good point.
im just saying it wasnt a 5 play highlight reel that was unimpressive. he has instincts
yeah i hope he turns out to be a stud, he looked like a solid hitter
but i thought our needs at LB were more pressing. but probably like in the past gene picks the random stud out of the group and improves the team
Gene must love the LB in FA and feel confident he can get two
Thats the only logic I see

Chad Owens the former Jaguars fullback?
or was that supposed to be a combination of Chad ochocinco and Terell Owens?

Chad Owens
As in the player that got all kinds of hype during minicamp in 2007 and did nothing further. They have similar skill sets. Last I remember of Owens he muffed a punt against the Texans last game of the season.
If hip hop is dead, then it happened the day that Dilla died.

Huh?
Chad Owens was a tiny player (5-7, 188) that played in a spread offense in college and ran a 4.62 at the combine and a 4.62 and 4.65 at his pro day.
Shorts III is almost six foot, 200 lbs. and ran a 4.59 at the combine but a 4.35 and 4.41 at his pro day on slick turf.
They’re not remotely similar.

My 'take':
The past 2 drafts with Gene have been easier to immediately love, simply because the number of holes on this team was incredible. Any pick was going to fill a gapping hole on our team. This draft, some of the picks happened to be for areas that didn’t have the greatest of needs, specifically QB and Guard. Was there need? Yes. Was it huge needs? I don’t think so. In my opinion, anybody who doesn’t think Gene Smith is going BAP just isn’t paying attention.
Having said all that, I like the draft. In Gene We Trust!
PS – Anybody listen to 930 The Fox today? There was guy who was talking about the fact that Gabbert went to the Jags and he said “I wouldn’t wish that on any player!”… what an A$$ hole!
75% like it
Accounting for the 5% that would automatically feel one way or another that’s a big positive for this team

They speak well of our draft pick prospects
Yea Yahoo was very friendly to us in all their write ups

btw
As I was watching Rod Issac highlights I couldn’t help but thinking he’d be an ideal free safety prospect. His speed would be useful in sideline to sideline plays and he obviously is a great tackler and seems to have decent size. Just my thoughts
It entered my mind also.
Mostly because he tackles well.

Theres going to be a lot of hate
because our draft was filled with names like Dowling, Amukamara or others. This draft was a great draft in terms of creating a great future for the Jaguars. Whether you like his picks or not every single one of us should be jumping on the bandwagon because we all want these players to succeed.

I hope we bring in Mario Harvey from Marshall. He should have been drafted. The guy can run the 40 in 4.4 secs.

I would think
as a UDFA jacksonville would be a pretty attractive place to come, because you see the success that others have had with the Jags as UDFAs so you know you will get a fair shot at playing in an actual game. This holds especially true on defense

I really like this draft, I think it has a ton of potential,
and for some reason I get a Aaron Rodgers vibe from Gabbart. Athletic, smart, came from a good college system. I think he’s going to be really good. And seriously, Gene has a serious man-crush on small school guys, but you find players where you find players.
