AFC South Draft grades

We have 5 picks and possibly the least contribution for this season of any draft class. Let's look at our rivals in the AFC South. Unfortunately,  they seemed to have drafted responsibly at Indy and Houston at least.  While Tennessee still have more picks than  us.

JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS grade: C+ (5 picks)

10. Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri: QB of the future, our whole draft is defined by his production. He's a high floor pick for me with + upside due to his youth and us having a decent incumbent to sit behind for a year. He has panic issues in the pocket but all the physical tools and mental makeup. B+

76. Will Rackley, OT/G, Lehigh: I know he's a small school sleeper etc.but he's been projected as Uche II, whom we got in the 5th round so is he worth  moving up and losing a player for with no UDFA.? There are starting guards in the 6th and 7th rounds. C-

114. Cecil Shorts, WR, Mount Union:Our scouts love him. He better deliver they really have a crap track record. C

121. Chris Prosinski, S, Wyoming: Love this pick he's a sleeper of mine> I expect him to be our FS. A

147. Rod Isaac, DB, Middle Tennessee State
: On board with this pick, but seeing no-one has heard of him, could we not have traded back for a 6th and 7th? C'mon really? Is this the only player left on our board at 5.16??? C

Overall: We may be taking this small school smugness too far. It's costing us picks in a year when we can't make up the ground at UDFA, pro-FA and waiver wire. Which is where Gene does his best work in my opinon.

HOUSTON Grade :A (8 picks)

11. J.J. Watt, DE/DT, Wisconsin: One of our round one options gone to the enemy for a 3-4 front. B

42. Brooks Reed, DE/OLB, Arizona: One of our other round one options gone to a more natural 3-4 front. A+

60. Brandon Harris, CB, Miami: A third potential first rounder picked up to shore up a woeful secondary. A

127. Rashad Carmichael, CB, Virginia Tech:
a 3rd rounder - one of my favourites - picked up to shore up a woeful secondary. A

144. Shiloh Keo, SS/ST, Idaho: Good playa, too slow. Maybe as a SS. C+

152. T.J. Yates, QB, North Carolina: Developmental QB in the 5th round!? Well done. B+

214. Derek Newton, OT, Arkansas State: Workout warrior worth a shot here. A

254. Cheta Ozougwu, DE/OLB, Rice
: Another rusher value pick. B

Overview: Defense is addressed with 5 high character contributors. Texans are now the team to beat in the AFC South. 3 starters at least.

INDY COLTS grade: A- (5 picks)

22. Anthony Castonzo, OT, Boston College: great fall for the safest LT in the draft. Peyton rejoices. A+

49. Ben Ijalana, G/OT, Villanova : Another grest OL player for Peyton to rejoice over.A

87. Drake Nevis, DT, LSU: PON is addressed with a Alualu-like player. Starter. B+

119. Delone Carter, RB, Syracus: Power RB good value. Expect a stronger running game with the first 3 picks.B

188. Chris L. Rucker, CB/S, Michigan State: Versatile DB, will contribute immediately. B+

Overview:3 starters plus 2 contributors in a draft class of 5. Fantastic value in a small sample.

8. Jake Locker, QB: Inaccurate and is a starter??? Embarrassing. C-

39. Akeem Ayers, OLB, UCLA: Overrrated  but value here and slow with no instincts. B

77. Jurrell Casey, DT, USC: Potential starter. B+

109. Colin McCarthy, ILB, Miami: Limited athlete but good instincts and passion. B

130. Jamie Harper, RB, Clemson: Overdrafted. C-

142. Karl Klug, DE, Iowa: Decent value: B

175. Byron Stingily, OT/G, Louisville
Overdrafted. C-

212. Zach Clayton, DT, Auburn. Risk and reward pick.B

251. Tommie Campbell, S, California-PA
: Risk and reward pick.C+
