Who they should have drafted
Blaine Gabbert 1st round 10th OverAll- Might be the MVP of this draft. That's usually worth a top 10 pick especially when he's a franchise QB, so this pick stays the way it is.
Will Rackley 3rd rd 76 OA- He had a late 1st round grade on him. Great guy with good athleticism and versatility. Looking at the draft and how it fell I don't see a player drafted after him with anywhere near the value he had. So this pick stays the same.
Cecil Shorts 4th rd 114 OA- Good player. Good height weight and speed. Very similar player to Greg Salas who went earlier, so he was a good pick. However, I thought there was better players in the draft available. This pick should have been Taiwan Jones. Think CJ Spiller. Similar speed and agility and abilities in space as well as on returns. We are stacked at RB, but I still think he is the BAP and would upgrade the position as a whole.
Chris Prosinski 4th rd 121 OA- Good height, weight, speed guy. Very productive tackler. Didn't play a lot in coverage and it shows a little. Has shorter arms so it's a bit of a hindrance in coverage and when tackling in space. We need to draft defense eventually so I can't fault the team for this pick, so maybe this pick stays. BUT if we are going BAP I would bet my money on Jacquizz Rodgers.
Rod Issac 5th rd 147 OA- Great player. Good speed. Not big but hits harder than many NFL safeties. Ball skills aren't great, but if he's gonna play NB and ST's he's gonna be a great fit for our team. This pick stays.
So after all of that, 2 picks were not BAP according to a nobody like me; and both of the would be BAP picks would have been RB's. But having studied the draft heavily this season I believe, and we didn't have a whole lot of BAP meets needs picks, but with every pick we got a good player and we got great value with our pick.
If we supplement this draft with some good FA's I think we are gonna be in for a great season and an even better future.

I would never have picked 2 running backs rather than those 2 picks..
i know u think its BAP, but that only goes so far..its BAP for needs. And running back is our least biggest need, so their is no way Gene even thinks of doing this. our first 2 picks were definitely BAP though. I like our draft.
Yeah I get it
I wouldn’t draft that many RB’s either, but I was just pointing out BAP vs the actual picks and to me they stuck their board very well.
why were the BAPs RBs? i disagree with that and i could argue that there were some good LBs available along with other CBs
but who cares at this point. we got the guys gene wanted so im happy
The BAP's
just so happened to be RB’s. I wouldn’t go that way most years. I’m one of those guys that really devalues the position. In fact I thought the Ingram pick was horrible considering what they gave up for him. I’m the type that really values anything revolving the passing attacks minus WR’s.(LT, QB, CB, FS, MLB) This year however 2 RB’s fell much further than they should have.
"This year however 2 RB’s fell much further than they should have."
Maybe that’s because the NFL GMs agree with you and have devalued the position even more than you do ?
DG is the best we have and help is not on the way. I realize he's not perfect, but I feel a lot better about him at QB than I do the O-Line, DB's, or LB's ability to cover a TE.
Maybe
or maybe they were drafting for needs a little more than they should, and maybe they having something against smaller backs which is just stupid when looking at all the smaller backs in the league that are doing really well.
Ray Rice, Darren Sproles, Ahmad Bradshaw, Chris Johnson, Jamaal Charles, and MJD.
They are not even close in my eyes
maybe in college the gap isn’t as big, but in the NFL there’s a huge difference.
i like rodgers and the atlanta mantra for running will only help
maybe im caught on the potential of devine

This might more appropriately be titled:who should have been taken had we used Ewdtrey's Big Board"
however Gene SMith’s board was used and he went BAP

I'll tell you this
first and foremost: Most people that watch football as a fan/enthusiast isn’t going to like him all that much, in comparison to some other past elite QB’s, no does he get the publicity. He wasn’t Cam Newton in the winning department. He didn’t make as many plays as Kaepernick. He doesn’t seem like he has “it.”(Which I would argue against) But what Gabbert is, which is what is most important, he’s the best prospect. Go through ANY list of things you want from a franchise QB, and chances are Gabbert has a check mark next to every box you want. Try to think of something you want from a QB and see if you can come up with more than 3 flaws.
He’s big, fast, strong, smart, tough, a leader, big arm, can throw on the run, and he has the quickest release which is not to be underestimated.(Not to mention the hair) Also Gabbert was in an offense with no receivers(Not good when you’re pass only offense) and only a so so OL. And the defense was one of the worst at stopping the pass. I’ve also noticed something else about Gabbert. When he knows…. truly knows…… that it’s on him to win, he seems unstoppable. When the adrenaline is going and he knows he needs to win the game he flips a light switch. He can suddenly throw down-field with incredible accuracy. Everything seems to slow down for him. He can just totally destroy opposing defenses, leaving them not even knowing what happened. If we can cultivate that part of his game, he could be one of the truly elite in the game.
Let me ask you this. What did you think of Matt Ryan coming into the draft, after throwing 19 INT’s and after completing less that 60% of his passes his senior year? In total, I think Gabbert is a better prospect with the only advantage that Matt had being the offense he played in at BC.

imo..Gabbert will benefit from Koetter’s tutelage. I think Gabbert fits more of the mold that Koetter would rather have in his O. I have no idea about our new QB coach. Anyone have any info on him?
i appreciate the response. i love detail like that
I loved Matt Ryan. The problem is that of course I would say that….
Regardless, the QB’s I’ve been high on :Aaron Rodgers
Matt Ryan
Matt Flynn (should’ve started over Russel in college, after that bowl game vs I think Miami)
Chad Henne (not reall high but I like him and still do)
Jimmy Clausen (non-debatable. He’s a ?)
Josh Freeman ( I raved about this guy on this site)
Matthew Stafford ( I thought he would be above avg, top-12 type but never elite. I could be wrong. He might get elite if he can play. They just had that conundrum. We need a QB, there’s one..)
Sam Bradford (favorite of the bunch)
Ricky Stanzi
Mallett
Dalton
Here was my final rankings this year: http://blackandteal.com/2011/04/27/my-final-2011-quarterback-rankings-for-the-draft/
I got more into it this season, as far as the QB position, than in years past. I could be wrong, obviously. In fact, theres a high chance im wrong. I just don’t see it with Gabbert. Now, believe me, the fan in me would love for nothing more than for him to be a stud. I just don’t see it
I wasn’t high on:Jamarcus Russell
Joe Flacco (still not, i would trade him for a few great draft picks after this season)
Matt Leinart
Vince Young
Mark Sanchez (still not but he’s starting to sway me)
Gabbert
Newton
Locker is somewhere in-between.
the main deal is that gabbert is what i would call a potential pick. The entire selection is based on potential alone. It’s not a scenario where you have great on-field prowess getting better. It’s simply potential
This worries me. Yes, he was on a bad team and no, good play in college does not equate good play in pros. It just seems to me that this is a hope and a prayer.
That said, I overall loved the rest of the draft class. I hope Gabbert proves me wrong.
My favorite part of Gabbert is his whip-like release on deep balls and sideline throws. It worries me that he doesn’t seem to be able to throw short passes with any consistent measure. It looks like its something new to him everytime he does it.
Thanks for the debate. I’ll be back later.

Great info.
In case people wanna know why people don’t like him, he only threw 16 TD’s in a pass happy offense and chase daniels had much more impressive numbers in the same system
