So, how did the Jacksonville Jaguars and general manager Gene Smith come to fall in love with Blaine Gabbert enough to be willing to trade up for him in the 2011 NFL Draft?

Terry McDonough wanted Gene to go watch Iowa quarterback Ricky Stanzi.

The Jaguars scouting department likes to watch some positions in person more than others. One of those positions is the quarterback position, because they feel like it's the best way to get a feel for the quarterback. What they do between the snaps, how the ball comes off their hand, the velocity in the passes, and many other things you can't really tell from film. McDonough didn't hide that he really liked Ricky Stanzi as an NFL prospected and was pushing for Gene Smith to go watch him live McDonough said at the Jaguars Evening with the Scouts event. Gene Smith went to the Insight Bowl between Iowa and Missouri. When McDonough asked Smith what he thought about Stanzi, Smith said ""I don't know, I spent all my time watching the Missouri quarterback."
