Draft Thoughts-For Those Who Care

Now that the dust has settled, I thought I'd open up the discussion for everyone's draft thoughts and reactions.

Star-divide

In this draft we came away with 5 players, 3 offense and 2 defense, when I saw some people predict that I scoffed, but that was how the world turned. Initially I was disappointed by this because our defense is in dire need of players. "Greg Jones is still on the board!" I thought to myself, but it was not to be and that's for the better. Gene selected the guys he did with reason, yes "In Gene We Trust." Developing that further it's about realizing that I am just a fan and guys like Prosinski and Isaac fly under my radar.

I'm not sure how many NFL teams even look at guys from these schools either because year after year you see certain teams stick with big conference schools to select their players from. So far I like the small school guys in the later rounds because their being there is not for lack of production, but "inferior" competition. Obviously we only have two years to look at, but it seems to be going well so far.

Gene has proven to me this draft that he is a true BAP drafter, with his own version(probably the version of every team) that uses a tiered system. Passing on Mason Foster for Will Rackley irked me at first, but all I can do is trust Gene and he hasn't disappointed me thus far.

Now onto the picks:

Blaine Gabbert: I never thought he'd be here, I never thought he'd get out of the Top 5, and I never thought we'd have the opportunity to trade up to get him. At first I was weary of QB that had been passed on by so many teams with dire needs at QB, but I do believe Gabbert will be the clay for Lombardi hoisting, franchise QB. And of course as Alfie pointed out to me early in the draft process, Aaron Rodgers was passed up 23 times. Before this pick, many have said that Gene's other 1st round picks were base hits, so many were surprised by this swing for the fences. Isn't any first round QB a swing for fences regardless of whether or not you trade away you second to take one. Might as bring in the big hitter and make sure it's worth swinging for the fences, which I think Gabbert is.

Will Rackley: I was at dinner during the third round and had my friend text me the pick when it came. I about slammed my phone on the table especially when I learned Greg Jones and Mason Foster were on the board. I'm very excited to add Rackley to the roster because he adds versatility and perhaps someone who can play tackle if one of our bookends gets hurt, but I disappointed we didn't select Mason Foster. In my mind Mason Foster was second round talent, like Rackley, and a day one starter. Clearly Gene didn't agree and I'm not going to go on bitching that he didn't select my guy.

Cecil Shorts: Right before our pick Greg Salas came off the board, which really disappointed me, but we got a guy with similar, gaudy production. I like triple sticks and think he'll be a good player for us, but again I was disappointed we didn't draft a defensive player, but you have to stick to your board.

Chris Prosinski: I remember seeing a post about him before the draft and thought to myself, "no way!" This guy ran train on his competition and considering how weak we are at FS he may have a shot to start immediately. At first I thought to myself that there is no way with some white boy with the name like Prosinski will succeed in the NFL, but then I realized I was just being silly.

Rod Isaac: I know absolutely nothing about Isaac, but from what little I've seen and heard, I like. I hope contributes right away and maybe in due time he'll turn into something special.

Overall, disregarding needs, I like this draft. We missed out on some guys by trading up twice, but that's what you have to do some times to get your guy. The one thing I would have liked Gene to do would have been to trade one of the 4ths and a future to trade up for Mason Foster. I felt like we left a lot of talent on the board there and someone who could start immediately with good ceiling, but clearly Gene didn't agree.

What're everyone else's thoughts now that the dust has settled?

My only thought is

don’t worry about Mason Foster. He’s an easy guy to like. He had tons of production and he was a tough guy, BUT he had a ton of flaws to his game. I wanted to like the player because I liked his tenacity and etc, but he struggled with power. He struggled in coverage. He didn’t keep his lane integrity. He might become a decent LB in the NFL, but I have a feeling Gene wants a true stud to play MLB in our defense instead of someone that we can get by with. If we want someone that we can just get by with we can go with a vet that at least knows what he’s doing.

Agree

I watched him one game and he always seemed to be late. He was just a guy for me. Good attitude etc.but bleh.

What could of happened; did.

Also

Head scout Terry McDonough said Gene and he were less than impressed with the whole LB draft class and would rather look to land free agents replacing or re-signing Durant and Morrison

OR the implication is they are happier with the guys on the IR last year like Cutrera and Bosworth, Bowen etc. than this year’s cohort.

What could of happened; did.

Huh?

Foster’s not a MLB. Where’d you get that from?

He's played

all 3 positions. Whatever I said would have been right.

I have concerns about Rackley

I’m not sure if he’ll kick on

What could of happened; did.
