Since the current Jaguars receivers is such a big concern to some fans, I decided to look over all of the other teams current receiver situation to see if ours is as big of a problem as some are making it. By my estimation, it would appear that 23 of the 32 teams have at least one go to receiver on their, listed as followed (although you may not agree with every receiver):

Patriots – Wes Welker

Dolphins – Brandon Marshall

Jets – Santonio Holmes (FA)

Ravens – Anquan Boldin

Bengals – Chad Ochocinco (FA), Terrell Owens (FA) and A.J. Green (even though he hasn’t proved it yet)

Texans – Andre Johnson

Colts – Reggie Wayne

Titans – Kenny Britt

Broncos – Brandon Lloyd and Demaryius Thomas

Chargers – Vincent Jackson (FA)

Chiefs – Dwayne Bowe

Cowboys – Miles Austin and Dez Bryant

Eagles – DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin

Redskins – Santana Moss

Giants – Hakeem Nicks

Vikings – Sidney Rice (FA) and Percy Harvin

Packers – Greg Jennings and Donald Driver

Falcons – Roddy White and Julio Jones (another unproven talent)

Saints – Marques Colston, Robert Meechum and Devery Henderson

Buccaneers – Mike Williams and Arrelius Benn

Lions – Calvin Johnson

Panthers – Steve Smith

Cardinals – Larry Fitzgerald

49ers – Michael Crabtree

After viewing all of this in a little more in detail, there is a lot to decipher from all of this. So since there is already so much here, I will say what I get from all of this and leave the rest up to you.

First and foremost, there will be many changes after this labor dispute is over, so another in depth look will be needed when football starts back up and final cuts are made.

Secondly, most teams that I think have a go to receiver do not fit the mold of the prototypical #1 receiver (6’2”+, 215+ pounds). Mainly, the Eagles with DeSean Jackson (5’10”, 175 lbs.) and Jeremy Maclin (6’0”, 198 lbs.), the Packers with Donald Driver (6’0”, 194 lbs.) and Greg Jennings(5’11”, 198 lbs) and the Patriots with Wes Welker (5’9”, 185 lbs.). What this tells me is that some of these go to receivers are more of a product of the system they’re in and the quarterback that is throwing them the ball, rather than their talent. I find this especially true since considering I put Mike Williams and Arrelious Benn of the Buccaneers on the list. I think you put them on other teams and they might not be the players they are today.

Thirdly, I can easily see arguments against players that I have put up their as go to receivers, but I think that is the way the team they are on views them but that is solely my opinion and is up for debate. Also there is a number of players that I did not mention that some could argue as go to receivers, such as Lee Evans and Roscoe Parrish of the Bills, Limas Sweed of the Steelers, Davon Bess of the Dolphins, Josh Cribbs of the Browns, Jacoby Jones of the Texans, Pierre Garcon of the Colts, Malcolm Floyd of the Chargers, Mario Manningham of the Giants, Johnny Knox of the Bears and Steve Breaston of the Cardinals. As they are all decent receivers, I’m not sure they should be considered as go to receivers but my perception is flawed due to the fact that I don’t keep up with other teams that much. Also, many of these guys that I think are go to receivers are nearing the end of the careers, so there is no telling how long they will be considered as such.

The teams with only one go to receiver are in a similar positions as the Jaguars, depending on mostly unproven talent to provide production until they can upgrade the position. As the Jags could use an upgrade at the position, so could a host of other teams, even those that have a go to receivers. Because as I stated, some of them are nearing the end of their careers (Panthers – Steve Smith) or out talented by some of the teams with premier receivers (Buccaneers – Mike Williams and Arrellious Benn). So while the Jaguars group may struggle at times during the season, by comparison to some squads, we still could do worse.

Lastly, I will say this; as there will be obvious holes in my argument (and I’m looking forward to being blasted for them), I think Mike Thomas has the potential to be the first Jaguar on our current roster to considered the go to guy, if he isn’t already considered as much.

*I would’ve liked to add more to this post, but as most would agree, it’s already long enough.

I would consider Mike Thomas a go-to guy.

Certainly if you’re considering Welker one. I mean, M80 had one of (if not the) highest catch percentages of any player in the NFL last year.

As to your question..

Yes, I think it probably is the worst WR corps in the league. After all they player they are promoting as the #1 guy was a waiver wire pickup from freaking San Francisco. Fuggedaboudit.

by robert ethan on Jun 8, 2011 8:28 PM EDT reply actions

Jason Hill was a 3rd round pick by San Fran

He also made 10 catches for for 233 yards in the last four games of the season. That’s 23 yards a catch. He’s a legitimage deep threat, Mike Thomas is a consistent hands/YAC receiver, and we have Shorts and Dillard who can step into the lineup to fight for the 3rd spot. Not only have I said that I have confidence in Hill, CBS also called him one of their 2011 breakout players.

San Fran isn't exactly dominating the league passing

If Hill couldn’t make the top 6 there, what is he worth? I think he caught less than half the balls thrown his way last season. He might be acceptable as a third or fourth receiver, but in Jax he is being thrown out as a #1. What does that tell you? They only took Shorts that high because they knew they needed instant help at the position and he was one of the oldest, most experienced options. I think they may have wanted Greg Salas but he went a couple picks earlier. There was a bit of a run and Jax felt they had to grab someone. Cecil is probably a fifth or sixth round talent otherwise. A fourth or fifth receiver on most depth charts. Dillard they got in the fifth round I believe and he hasn’t done anything to show that it was a bargain pick.

by robert ethan on Jun 9, 2011 3:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Jimmy Smith was a cast off too

From Dallas.
Dillard has had basically the same career path as MSW. If he gets on the field next year, then we can decide if he’s a bargain pick. People within the organization, however, love his hands and route running.
Also, calling Shorts a “reach” is a misnomer, because it’s only a reach if a player doesn’t work out.

Let's see him do it over 16 games

I’m not sold on him yet.

No you can not

argue that Limas Sweed is a go to guy. I can’t even remember the last time he had a catch. If anything Mike Wallace is their go 2 guy going into next year. Not sure Ward has anything left. I do expect a lot from Emmanuel Sanders next year too.
Cribbs is nothing near a go 2 receiver. He’s a gimmick offensive player that’s best on special teams. Little might become a go 2 guy next year though.
And Demaryius may become a go to guy in the future, but he isn’t yet; especially now that he’s injured his achilles.
Benn is not a go to guy yet. And neither is Crabtree.
Collie is totally a go to guy. When healthy he was outproducing Dallas Clark and Reggie Wayne.

by Ewdtrey on Jun 8, 2011 9:02 PM EDT reply actions

Thanks...

for that. I can’t debate what you are saying because I don’t get to watch the other teams much, it was more of a perception thing than reality based. I’ll give you that about Collie, I don’t know why I didn’t put him up there. It was obvious he was a go to guy by how much he kept getting mentioned when he was injured.

I will say that I would’ve at least thought Crabtree would be a go to guy at this point in his career. Especially with the way he was hyped going into the 2009 draft.

I can't believe you don't remember the 5 yard out Sweed caught week 3 in 2009!

(hahaha)

At best, Sweed should be seen as a player fans have high hopes for a rebound year out of. Much like Demaryius, he’s coming off an achilles injury from last off-season.

It is better to debate a question without settling it than to settle a question without debating it.

He's not listed...

as a Jaguar on the official site. It’s interesting to me that I didn’t even think about him when compiling the list of Jaguar receivers. I usually pride myself on being familiar with every player on the roster.

by kjones407 on Jun 11, 2011 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Me too.

I can’t wait to see if they are better than what most are giving them the chance to be.

We aren’t the “worst” but we aint the best yet either.. We were DEFINITELY the worst when Matt Jones was considered the #1 only a few years ago. Since then we have a all new WR Corps..

So...

who would you say has the worst group of receivers at the moment?

by kjones407 on Jun 9, 2011 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Last year

it would have been easy to say the Browns. The Raiders, Bears, Redskins, Panthers, Seahawks, 49er’s, and Rams all have a worse receiving group than we do. Not surprisingly, only the Bears had a better record than us, and they had a very good defense.

by Ewdtrey on Jun 9, 2011 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions

What about the Bills?

Do you think their group of receivers are better than our current group?

They do have Lee Evans and Steve Johnson...

Forgot about...

Steve Johnson. Other than that big drop he had last year in the back of the endzone that went on to cause them to lose the game, it would appear as the guy has a bright future.

I wasn’t implying anything negative about him by my comment. It would seem as if he is going to be a big playmaker for them.

by kjones407 on Jun 13, 2011 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions

They weren't

great at any one thing except run defense, but they were effective more than anything. They were top ten overall on defense and they were top ten on 3rd down.

by Ewdtrey on Jun 11, 2011 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Hmmm..

Its hard to say who overall are worse. Its a team sport.. so its hard to really tell if its the WR CO rps or OL, or the Running Backs, or QB. Sometimes its hard to compare all 32 teams if you don’t look at each one and study them like you do your own. But the Raiders and the Redskins definitely are both pretty bad.

Think about it one mans trash can be anothers treasure (Jimmy Smith and Kennan McCardell for instance, Maybe Jason Hill is in that group ). Technically the Bengals should be considered to have a top caliber WR Corps.. but I personally think the “personalities” get in the way of the game play and I wouldnt take either for our team..

by Charles Goin on Jun 13, 2011 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions

All true.

It is no doubt a team sport, more so than any other sport if you ask me. One unit can have a negative impact on another thus causing the whole team to suffer because of it. That was the case with our defense last year. The pass rush wasn’t getting there, the safety play was negligent and our linebackers were out of position at times which reflected badly on the cornerbacks, causing the pass defense to have a lowly ranking which the corners shouldered most of the blame for. Not to say that there play was spectacular or anything, but just to illustrate the point you were making about it being hard to tell who is at fault for one unit appearing to lack talent.

I’m thinking about doing one of these for every position so we can compare and contrast the talent of our team against other teams. Although it kinds of make it all speculation without free agency taking place yet which will change the landscape of the league, albeit not by much.

Say what you want to about receivers, but really there are only about 10 that matter and those are the All-star, game-changer, size-and-speed guys. Pierre Garcon is about as talented as the average NFL receiver, but playing with Peyton Manning he looks like a stud. Even a guy like Steve Johnson. Yeah he had 82 catches for over a grand, but is he really a great receiver? He dropped five passes in one game last year. In one game!

Fitzgerald, Moss, Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson, Dez Bryant, Deshawn Jackson and maybe one or two more I cant think of off the top of my head. That’s basically everyone that matters.

by Brian Levenson on Jun 9, 2011 4:05 PM EDT reply actions

Moss and Bryant?

What about them make them game changers to you? I understand Moss to an extent because teams still have to respect his ability to stretch the field, but that’s about it. Teams wouldn’t have to worry about any of the short to intermediate routes, at least I don’t think so. And isn’t Dez a little to much of an unproven commidity at the moment to be considered in the same league with Fitzgerald, A. Johnson, C. Johnson and DeSean Jackson as elite receivers at the moment. If Bryant is that good, wouldn’t players like Kenny Britt of the Titans and Hakeem Nicks of the Giants be considered just as good also? I’d add Brandon Marshall to that list easily. You are right about what you are getting at though, there are only a handful of guys that are good enough to make the rest of the receiving corps of their respective team not look bad. Although I would say the Saints have a pretty good group, even if it is Drew Brees throwing them ball.

by kjones407 on Jun 9, 2011 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I was naming guys with size and speed.

Dez was a big redzone threat last year pre-injury, and also was quick enough to be a kick returner. Naming Moss was more of a reflex than a realistic thing. Even now, it’s hard for me to imagine a list of the most dangerous receivers without him on it, even though he won’t be a top receiver next year.

Britt is on a run-first team. He doesn’t draw double teams either so I wouldn’t consider him a game changer. Haven’t seen enough of Nicks to say one way or the other. I’d maybe say Marshall, but he drops a lot of balls. Another borderline guy for me is Braylan Edwards. Both of those guys have the physical skills, but I’m not sure I can put them on the list.

by Brian Levenson on Jun 9, 2011 5:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn't know...

Marshall had an issue with drops which would definitely keep him from being one of the elite wideouts. Good call on Edwards, he does have all of the physical tools but it just seems he’s one of those cases that can’t put it all together.

How do you think guys like A.J. Green, Julio Jones, Jonathan Baldwin and Torrey Smith will do? I know Green and Jones has the speed but I’m not so sure about Baldwin and Smith in that regard.

by kjones407 on Jun 9, 2011 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

Marshall has always had a problem with drops. He’s also not the deep threat many people think. BUT, he’s still a very good player. He makes big plays and he gets a lot of YAC.

by Ewdtrey on Jun 9, 2011 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I think

Green, Baldwin, and Jones will do fine, but Smith will probably struggle to be what they want him to be, a deep threat. He can be a productive player catching passes underneath though. He’s similar to a guy mentioned earlier, Pierre Garcon.

by Ewdtrey on Jun 9, 2011 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Prisco put Hill in the "breakout" category

…because he is listed as a starter and had only 10 catches last season. Pretty hard not to “break out” in that situation. He could finish with 25 catches and still qualify. But he was left on the bench through some pretty terrible talent years in San Fran. There had to have been a reason.

by robert ethan on Jun 9, 2011 7:36 PM EDT reply actions

A lot of it

had to do with injury. And some of it was because he was young. And some of it had to do with the lack of talent around him. Some of it had to do with him learning the system slowly, which I can’t blame him for considering the turnover there.

by Ewdtrey on Jun 9, 2011 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Have you seen the NFL before?

Guys get looked over all the time, you have to judge his talent, not judge someone else’s judging of his talent. Plus he had issues with Singletary which is probably why he never got on the field.

by Sylvester.The.Jaguar.fan on Jun 11, 2011 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Jimmy Smith..

had some bad injuries (An appendix rupture for instance), was cut and was all but run out of the NFL. Until we picked him up. Jason Hill could be that caliber guy, we will find out sooner than later I am sure.

Let's not forget that Jason Hill

had to deal with 2 different Head coaches and 4 different OC’s in his 4 years in San Francisco. It’s tough to get an offense working well with that going on.

Here's hoping we have NFL football in 2011
