2 positions we should attack in free agency
I am going to get straight to the point. I feel there is two positions the Jags must go after. The first, is defensive end.
I know..... A lot of you feel that we have a lot of young talent with Jerey Mincey(potential, not young), Austin Lane, Larry Hart, and Aaron Morgan. The problem is Jack Del Rio. Does he trust that Wayne Weaver will keep him around like he said if they contend for a playoff spot and not make the playoffs. He may not. I firmly believe that a dominate front 4 that provides pressure will always give you a chance to win.
Perfect example: 2010-2011 National Champions Auburn Tigers (They had a terrible secondary that constantly gave SEC recievers 100 yard games. But pressure bust pipes!
Guys we should target are:
Tambi Hali, DE, Chiefs. Age: 27
A monstrous pass-rusher, he registered 14.5 sacks.
Ray Edwards, DE, Vikings. Age: 26.
Ray Edwards had a tremendous year, registering eight sacks and shutting down the run on his side.
Charles Johnson, DE, Panthers. Age: 25.
Became the fifth Panther ever to record double-digit sacks (12) in 2010. He was dominant from the left end position all year.
The second, is free safety.
Guys we should target:
Eric Weddle, S, Chargers. Age: 26. Excluding Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu, Weddle might be the best safety in the NFL
Quintin Mikell, SS, Eagles. Age: 30.
A Pro Bowler who excels both in both run support and pass coverage. Nothing else to be said. WE need him despite age.
Atari Bigby, SS, Packers. Age: 29.
Atari Bigby is an above-average safety who always seems to be hurt. Like Kampman, if he can prove he is healthy, he may become a steal.
I didn't think that the Jags have to spend a lot of money on a super star linebacker when you have you have a dominate front 4 occupying blockers to allow the linebackers to fly around. Just make sure we get sure tacklers like a Stephen Nicholas, Thomas Howard(Kirk Morrison ex-teammate), or Manny Lawson. If we re-sign Kirk Morrison, I believe we have a defense poised to make a playoff run.
Feel free to agree or diagree.

Edwards or Johnson
Either one would be good at DE, but I think Edwards would want too much money. As far as safety I think Weddle is the only viable option since Mikell and Bigby are both strong safetys. James Anderson isn’t on the list but would also be a good pick up at LB.
Mikell
Could play free safety. He has the coverage ability and range to do it.

Yeah he probably could
My only other concern would be his age. He’ll be 31 at the begining of the season.

Did you really just use college football to make a point about NFL football?

I'm thinking with only one
starting caliber LB under contract, we might want to attack that position first.
Here's hoping we have NFL football in 2011

I think all three of the DEs will want money we can't pay
However, Weddle plus resigning Morrison if we can’t get Ruud or Posluzny is a good route to go and then try and sign a Stephen Nicholas or Lawson. Keep your eye on Ruud though.
What we really need
is for them to come to terms on a new CBA.
I’m not at all convinced this is going to happen any time soon.

Are the Chiefs really not gonna resign Tamba Hali?
I’m betting they will. He was a big part of their success last year.
Also, isn’t he a 3-4 player?

He's a 3-4 OLB.
He might be able to play DE, but I don’t see that being a realistic option considering he’ll cost a ridiculous amount, which is even worse considering he’ll have to change positions.
Yeah, that sounds more realistic.
I’d put money down that the Chiefs aren’t letting him get away.

First off, College football and Professional Football are two completely different sports.
Auburn isn’t at all a good point when discussing the pro game. Second, Edwards is gonna want a lot of money plus a lot of character issues, I don’t think Smith would go after him. I’m pretty sure the Chiefs franchised Hali. Bigby is slower, older, more injury prone version of Courtney Greene, why would we want him? Quintin Mikell is average.
FS is the biggest need and LB is definitely next on that list. I’d love to have Charles Johnson but Idk if i see that happening for the Jags.

I don’t see how we come out of free agency without a WR.
