With a new labor deal official, the Jacksonville Jaguars can begin negotiating with unrestricted free agents as early as tomorrow. They can't officially sign players that are not their own until Friday, but deals and visits can be put into place. Chris Wesseling of Rotoworld.com made a nice little catch about something the Jaguars could do in free agency not many of us would really expect, target a wide receiver.
The majority of the Jags' attention will be devoted to the defensive side of the ball. Solid all-around safety Eric Weddle has been the name most connected with Jacksonville, and they figure to add a veteran linebacker as well. Director of player personnel Terry McDonough suggested in April that an "explosive wide receiver" could also be on the wish list.
Here is what Wesseling is referencing in regards to getting an "explosive wide receiver" back in April:
McDonough said the Jaguars have to fill some holes with free agents, and they'll be looking for a linebacker, safety, pass-rusher, cornerback, an explosive wide receiver and an interior lineman.
I figured it was in reference to the NFL Draft, given the Jaguars wound up drafting Cecil Shorts III, but McDonough clearly says free agency. Someone like James Jones, who I pointed out a while ago, could very well be the type of target they could be looking for.
