I'm actually quite excited about Schiechl

I have some lofty aspirations for him. I want him to spend some in the system, grinding away, until he becomes a starter and replaces Kampmann. And in the near future he’ll be a starting DE, and during a Monday night game he will get to announce himself as Marc Schiechl, from THE Colorado School of Mines.

There is no limit

90 players cvan be bring into camp. Jags are standing at 60 (61 if they sign Podlesh). Add the 5 drafted players and the 3-4 FAs, there is room for 15-20 UDFAs.

I've watched Harris play a few times...

Pretty decent and all, but I don’t know we’re bringing in another sub-5’9 guy. It almost feels like a gimmick.

by SilentJag on Jul 25, 2011 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Little sidenote.

Harris:
40: 4.44
Vert: 38 1/2

Jones-Drew:
40: 4.39
Vert: 36.

Very similar. MJD 5’6"-5’7" 208 lbs. Harris 5’7"-5’8" 197 lbs.

They have similar body types. Similar speeds. He may make it on the roster. Or hopefully the practice squad. I can see him being a solid #2 on a roster. Worse case scenario a #3.

I love Schiechl

Something about him makes me think he will be a productive players in a couple years. He looks like he has solid moves and he’s pretty strong. He looks relentless too, which you know had Gene going crazy. I wouldn’t mind seeing us convert him to like a pass rushing LB or something like what they are doing with Hart.

I'm also a fan of scheichl

but at 6’2 252lb his size isn’t ideal for a 4-3 end. And we haven’t had much success with the designated pass rushers.

He is a UDFA

that many teams take a liking to. He seems to fit well in the 3-4 OLB. And needs to build up a little more muscle to be a Kampman like rusher. He does have 46 career sacks, and 12 this past season. That is a lot. But it is a Div II school. He has solid burst off the line, and a lot of upper body strength. He looks like a hard hitter as well. He man-handled those DII Lineman. I would love to see this guy turned into a 4-3 OLB. If he can cover. He will provide depth, and eventually could take the spot. If he’s good.

all displayed interest an Pats and Jags had private workouts with him. The other two teams are good 3-4 teams. So he may fit better in a 3-4.

He also registered a 38 1/2 inch vertical leap and a 10-9 broad jump, a 4.27 in the short shuttle and a 6.78 in the three-cone drill.

He bench pressed 225 pounds 22 times.

He can squat 600 pounds six times.

Perfect physical specimen for the position with prototypical size and athleticism. Worked out better than any linebacker in the draft apart from Von Miller. The second set of stats are awesome and explosive with an impressive 38.5 + 10.9 +22 = 71.4 KEI.

4:00 PM ET – Mount Union’s Kyle Miller has popped up on the Pro Football Talk vists and workouts tracker for the Jaguars. According to the chart, Miller is scheduled to meet with the Jaguars sometime in April. CDSDraft.com reports that Miller is a 6’5, 249 pound tight end that doubled as a long snapper for Division III Mount Union.

Lacks power at the point of attack in the run game and really struggles to generate an initial pop on contact. Possesses decent flexibility and initial quickness off the snap, but can easily get jolted backward and overwhelmed into the backfield. Looks better when asked to quickly get his feet around blocks and try to seal defenders inside. However, lacks ideal balance on contact and isn’t real heavy handed. Has a tendency to quickly begin to bend at the waist and will routinely fall off blocks.

Lacks range off the snap in the pass game and struggles to reach explosive linemen firing off his frame. Plays stiff through his lower half and just doesn’t have the type of athleticism to hold up inside in pass protection at the next level.

Impression: Struggled at times in both the run and pass game at the college level, which doesn’t bode well for his chances in the NFL.

Scouting Report
A tall, lean target who lacks ideal girth and power in all areas of the game. Isn’t real shifty off the line, takes too long to get up to full speed and isn’t a guy who has the kind of second gear to get behind NFL defenders. Is at his best when asked to find soft spots underneath, settle down in coverage and work the middle of the field. Isn’t dynamic after the catch, but has the savvy and body control to side step a defender and quickly get up field. But isn’t going to be much of a threat with the ball in his hands. Lets too many throws get into his body. Would like to see him do a better job plucking the football off his frame on all areas of the field.

Is a savvy route runner. Doesn’t generate much explosion out of his breaks and has a tendency to round his routes off a bit when trying to get out of his vertical breaks. But sells his sharply breaking routes well, keeps his feet under him and doesn’t waste much motion for such a leggy guy. Does a nice job getting out of his breaks, using his frame to box defenders away from the ball and making the play. Isn’t a guy who will ever generate a ton of separation for himself, but knows how to create enough to make a play on the football vs. man.

Impression: He’s a smart, savvy wideout with good size, but is very average as an athlete. Best case is he makes a roster as a low-end No. 5 or 6 guy, but lacks much upside. A free agent only you bring to camp, but will have a tough time making a final 53.

Scout’s notebook: offense
Thoughts on Daniel Thomas, A.J. Green and more.
Scouting Report
A thick, compact runner who possesses a well-built frame and has the type of girth to effectively take a pounding between the tackles. Is a balanced runner who has the ability to sharply get in and out of his breaks and possesses the type of body control to consistently make a man miss and accelerate up the field. Runs low between the tackles, plays behind his pads and doesn’t give defenders much of an area of hit. Has the ability to churn his legs through contact, bounce off would-be tackles and work his way through contact. Exhibits an explosive first step when asked to burst out of his breaks and into daylight. Demonstrates a good first step and above-average top-end speed, but lacks an elite second gear to his game. Has the ability to reach the edge and quickly press space but isn’t going to outrun angles in the open field. Possesses good, not great, feel and vision inside. Is at his best making defenders miss and picking his way through tight areas, but at times will slow his feet trying to decipher information. Works his legs hard and does a nice job slithering his way through seams, but isn’t the most instinctive of runners.

Can catch the football out of the backfield, but lets too many throws get into his frame and doesn’t look real natural overall as a receiver. Understands blitz pick-up and routinely puts himself in good position on contact. However, lacks ideal size and can be overwhelmed on contact.

Impression: I like his wiggle, compact build and ability to accelerate into space. Offers enough to warrant a roster spot.

All-Star game fallers
Which prospects hurt themselves on teams’ draft boards?
Scouting Report
A tall, lean corner who gets really leggy in his drop and doesn’t trust his ability to turn and run with receivers down the field. Has a tendency to open up his hips prematurely in off-man coverage and struggles to get back up to speed quickly out of his transition. Lacks ideal footwork, allows his lower half to consistently get overextended and has a tough time keeping his feet under him and remaining balanced, which consistently causes him to struggle to cleanly redirect/change directions.Possesses average straight-line speed for his size, but isn’t a guy who can make up for a false step and will allow receivers to get behind him.

Displays decent flexibility when asked to press and uses his long frame and hands to get into the body of receivers and re-route off the snap. However, again is a bit stiff when asked to turn and run and although he does do a nice job getting his head around and locating the football, just doesn’t have the type of body control to physically go up attack the football and make a play. Isn’t a real physical tackler at this stage either, fails to consistently generate a pop on contact and isn’t a real secure wrap-up guy.

Impression: Possesses good size and can track the football once he gets going. However, his lack of footwork and overall body control really hinders his ability to get up to speed quickly and close on the ball

And it strikes me that a lot of them are coming off injuries. Must have been stars as juniors with their senior season’s derailed and possible bargains if they check out medically???

RB Richard Murphy has Gene character

The Rayville native lost both of his parents, his dad when he was young and his mother just before he went to LSU. He said there were times after his mother’s death when he didn’t think he could play anymore, but his remaining family — brothers, sisters, a son and a doting Barton — helped him overcome every obstacle. “They said, ‘She wouldn’t want you just to give up on something she always watched you do, something you love so much,’” Murphy said. “I use it as motivation now. Everything I’ve lost and everything I have is a motivation.” Now Murphy is using that motivation to become the go-to player in the Tigers’ backfield. Coach Les Miles said he could’ve started the spring game thanks to the diligent rehabilitation in which he participated daily. While he was kept out to ensure he was fully healed, the coach feels confident enough in Murphy to bestow upon him a senior honor. Murphy will wear the No. 18 jersey, a new LSU tradition given to the player who “best represents what it means to be a Tiger on and off the field.” Matt Mauck, Hester and Richard Dickson have all worn the number. “I feel privileged to have it,” Murphy said. “I know wearing that jersey is something special. You feel like you’ve got to walk a certain way because you’re a leader now. I’m a veteran and this is an important opportunity for me to have.” Murphy, who redshirted his freshman season, is on track to graduate in December and has put on 10 pounds in addition to the rehab. – Krysten Oliphant, Louisiana Sports Bureau

From New Era Scouting top 10 UDFAs

DARREN EVANS, RB, Virginia Tech – The big back who ran for over 1200 yards as a freshman for the Hokies would be a nice pickup for many teams but is also a bit of an injury risk. After missing the entire 2009 season with a knee injury, Evans returned to form in 2010 with 854 yards and a 5.7 YPC while splitting time with Ryan Williams and David Wilson.

Why he wasn’t drafted – Doesn’t have the greatest top end speed and he is an injury concern who even admitted that “I just kind of feel like that would be a gamble just because even though my knee feels fine, you never know,” when asked why he chose to enter the NFL Draft early.

I love the Lutrus commitment.

Lutrus is very versatile, and is solid enough in coverage he can cover tight ends, and some receivers. He is a solid tackler, and would be a very good back up, rotational linebacker, especially to cover a tight end. He will definetley make the roster.

TE Tommy Gallarda

NFP’s Wes Bunting on Tommy Gallarda:
“A big, well-put-together tight end who possesses a nice combination of size, hands and coordination in the pass game. However, he’s a lumbering athlete who lacks any real gear down the field and isn’t going to generate any separation for himself at the next level. Displays some pop as a blocker and has enough size to win at the point of attack, but isn’t dominant in this area.

Impression: A nice-sized prospect but isn’t special in any area of the game."

WR Greg Ellingson from FootballFiend

NFP’s Wes Bunting on Greg Ellingson:
“A tall, lean target who lacks ideal girth and power in all areas of the game.

A free agent only you bring to camp, but will have a tough time making a final 53."

Draft InSider on Greg Ellingson:
“Bio: Used as part of the starting rotation the past three seasons, most recently posting 43/612/15 as a senior after junior totals of 34/528/4.

Positive: Adequately sized possession receiver with reliable hands. Uses his frame to shield away defenders, displays good eye/hand coordination, and will expose himself to the big hit in order to come away with the ball. Comes back to passes out of breaks, effectively makes the over-the-shoulder catch downfield, and easily adjusts to errant throws to make the reception in stride. Settles into open spots on the field, extends his hands, and offers the quarterback a nice target.

Negative: Lacks a quick release off the line and does not have a second gear or the ability to stretch the field vertically. Occasionally struggles in battles.

Analysis: Ellingson was productive on the college level and will get consideration as a fifth receiver in the NFL primarily used to run underneath routes."

Consensus Draft’s Bill Carroll on Greg Ellingson:
“Overview: March 3 Pro Day results:

39.5" VJ; 10’ 3" BJ; 4 × 225 BP; 4.28 SS; 6.75 3-cone

Strengths: Tall and rangy with excellent speed and decent hands. Pretty crafty. Well under the radar guy who can make the tough catch in traffic. Has great triangle numbers and works pretty hard at his craft. Young with lots of upside left. Played well against decent competition in college.

Weaknesses: Needs to bulk up considerably. Only 4 reps on bench press suggest weak upper body. Not a route runner yet. Not a good cold weather prospect. Needs refinement in many areas. Looks like a career #3 and possession guy.

Projection: 7th-priority UDFA"

RB DuJuan Harris from FootballFiend

NFP’s Wes Bunting on DuJuan Harris:
“A thick, compact runner who possesses a well-built frame and has the type of girth to effectively take a pounding between the tackles.

Exhibits only average feel and vision inside. Is at his best making defenders miss and accelerating toward daylight, but at times will slow his feet trying to decipher information and get caught up going east/west behind the line. Works his legs hard and does a nice job slithering his way through seams but isn’t the most instinctive of runners reading blocks and picking his way through traffic.

Offers enough to potentially get himself into a camp and fight for a roster spot."

Draft InSider on DuJuan Harris:
“Bio: Three-year starter awarded all-Conference honors after his sophomore and junior seasons. Totals last year included 97/603/6 on the ground with 11 catches. Career-high totals of 210/1077/11 on the ground and 36/2016/3 as a receiver came during his sophomore campaign.

Positive: Undersized yet aggressive ball carrier with a complete game. Physical back who plays bigger than his listed size and displays the ability to break tackles and pick up yardage off initial contact. Works runs and falls forward when tackled. Can get to the outside and turn the corner. Displays good quickness. Solid receiver and effectively makes the reception in stride.

Negative: Not a back who creates yardage. Never built upon what was a terrific sophomore season.

Analysis: Harris was a productive player at Troy, and though he lacks great size for the next level, he has enough versatility to be given looks as a third-down back/situational ball carrier."

Consensus Draft’s Bill Carroll on DuJuan Harris:
“Overview: 2010: Troy senior tailback DuJuan Harris sung quite a swan song against Ohio as he rushed for 105 yards and a score in his last collegiate game, the 2010 Little Caesars Pizza Bowl. He finished the year with 603 yards rushing, he added 97 receiving yards and 103 yards on 5 kick returns.

Harris was a 1,000 yard back a couple years ago but the Trojans like to take a committee approach to rushing the ball so he was never able to reach that milestone again.
2009: Voted Preseason All-Sun Belt by coaches and media … Finished the season as Troy’s second-leading rusher with 583 yards and 10 touchdowns …2008: Named to the second team All-Sun Belt … Finished as the Sun Belt’s fourth leading rusher…Finished ranked 51st in the nation and is just the fifth player in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season … Is a multiple threat weapon for the Trojans, having recorded at least one reception in every game and even throwing for a score against ULL … Finish the season ranked fifth in the league, and 91st in the nation, in all-purpose yards …2007: Saw action in all 12 games as a backup running back … Finished as the teams’

Strengths: Quick, decisive, powerful, with good balance and burst Harris runs bigger than he measures. He has solid hands and some return ability.

Weaknesses: He lacks the size and power to be an every down back for most teams but zone blocking teams like Washington and the Texans may consider him late in the draft. He is not quite the big play threat that Sproles or Jones-Drew is.

Projection: He is not quite as explosive as Jones-Drew, but is quicker than Joe Morris. He reminds me a bit of Ricky Ervins. He’ll need to prove he can contribute on special teams and as a 3rd down back to be selected."

Gallarda

may be our #3 TE. Before his foot injury, he was a 5th round sleeper. 6’5" 262 lbs. 4.85 40 22 bench reps. He was a key blocker for Boise’s offense, maybe he’s our 6th lineman.

LB JoJo Dickson from Draft Insider

Bio: Two-year starter who totaled 34 tackles in seven games last season before being sidelined with a broken leg. Junior numbers included 79 tackles to earn all-Conference honors.

Positive: Quick, athletic linebacker prospect who displayed a lot of skill before his injury. Breaks down well, stays on his feet, and plays with a nasty attitude. Attacks assignments, remains disciplined, and shows skill sideline to sideline. Fluid and fast getting out to the flanks, gets depth on pass drops, and is effective in zone coverage. Has good hands for the interception.

Negative: Undersized and is easily blocked at the point. Not a strong wrap-up tackler. Just marginal force up the field on the blitz.

Analysis: Dixon is a pursuit linebacker with the ability to chase the action from every angle of the field. He offers potential as a back-up weak side linebacker if he regains his health and gets back to prior form."

CB Kevin Rutland from FootballFiend

Draft InSider on Kevin RutLand:
“Bio: Two-year starter who finished with 44/3/7 as a senior and 47/2/2 as a junior. Spent time at safety as a sophomore.

Positive: Nice sized cornerback who has displayed a lot of ability the past two seasons. Quick flipping his hips transitioning off the line, will battle throughout the action, and plays a physical brand of football. Shows a burst of speed, effectively follows receivers across the field, and works hard to defend passes. Is a willing run defender also effective on the blitz, and shows a burst of closing speed. Displays good recognition of routes in zone coverage.

Negative: Lacks a smooth and quick backpedal. Slow to react at times and loses a half step to opponents off the snap. Lacks great quickness.

Analysis: Rutland was a solid college cornerback and projects well as a dime back in a zone system at the next level."

Consensus Draft’s Adam Bendiksen on Kevin RutLand:
“Overview: Two-year starter; team captain.

Strengths: Tremendous speed and fine athletic ability. Natural cover corner with loose hips and the ability to turn and run with receivers. Very fluid and sticks to his man like glue. Fine ball skills and excellent anticipation; jumps many routes. Plays outside and in the slot, where he often is called on to blitz. Excellent range in the open field.

Weaknesses: Very raw as a tackler, and a liability versus the run, though he has worked very hard to improve in these areas.

Projection: As a cover man, he’s what you want, but his lack of tackling ability will push him down the charts. Still, corners are a high priority, so he’ll be a mid-low round pick who has a chance to stick as a fifth/six corner. Assuming he improves his tackling, should be a regular contributor down the road."

Eric Gordon

was supposedly overshadowed by Greg Jones, and if it Jones wasn’t on the team, Gordon may have been an early pick in the draft. But that’s an opinion. Gordon is a good tackler, but isn’t good in coverage, he’s decent though. But the best thing about him, is he has 4.53 speed, and a 40 1/2 vertical. That is great. And 25 reps.

I like our group so far

Too bad about Mario Harvey though…would have liked to have seen him in a jags uniform. I really like the Lutrus and Lockley signings. I think both could make the team since we don’t have a lot of depth at LB. Also the Estrada kid from NAU can lay the wood…saw him play when NAU played Montana last year; he also has a pretty good vertical.
