Jaguars Miss on Eric Weddle, Re-Signs with Chargers
Well guys, the #SignWeddle movement didn't work. According to Kevin Acee of The San Deigo Union-Tribune, free agent safety Eric Weddle has agreed to terms to re-sign with the San Diego Chargers. There were reports that it came down between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Chargers, and the home team won out. Landing Weddle in reality was a bit of a pipe dream, but it was nice to see the Jaguars take the swing. Weddle became the highest paid safety in NFL history.
With Weddle being off the market, there are still some other possibilities for the Jaguars. A player they have been linked to is Ravens safety Dawan Landry. Other players like Michael Huff, Dashon Goldson, Donte Whitner, and Atari Bigby are out on the market. With the two highest priced safeties gone, I'd expect the Jaguars to pick up one of those guys and another linebacker.
Posting from my phone in raw HTML, apologies for mistakes.

I think this might turn out to be better
Weddle is not worth the $$ he got and one of the second tier guys will likely be just as good.
I was just telling my boss about it (he's a Cowboys fan)
He couldn’t believe Weddle got that kind of money.

Dawan Landry: Dawan Landry expected to go to Jaguars
Dawan Landry – DB – BAL – Jul. 27 – 1:30 pm et
NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora is confident that free agent SS Dawan Landry will land with the Jaguars.
The Florida Times Union has also reported on the Jags’ interest in Landry. Jacksonville missed out on Eric Weddle when he re-signed with the Chargers Wednesday, so their sights now look to be set on Ed Reed’s old running mate. Somewhat surprisingly, free agent Michael Huff is generating no buzz. Jul. 27 – 1:30 pm et

When its all said and done we probably end up with Landry and Sessions
And I’d like to take this time to wish nothing but bad things to the Chargers organization you stole our top two safety targets this offseason. Probably retribution for the Osgood thing that cost you the playoffs last year. I hope you finish last in the division and move to L.A.
I just hope that all that talk about the Ravens safeties being interchangeable

The Bills fans last night, Don’t worry we’ll pick up somebody good. Believe me Sean Considine will not be our S.
I dont think its the same
We all had obvious interest in the top player at our position of greatest need. In our heads, or at least mine, i would have never thought that would come at highest-paid-safety-in-the-NFL type of money. Sure we have to spend a lot of money just to get to the salary cap floor, but lets be reasonable and not sacrifice the future for the sake of spending money. Personally, I like seeing a top team in the AFC throwing that kind of money into one player while we continue to build a competitive roster through the draft and young ascending free agents.

Weddel said he did not want to reveal the other team in negotiations. Sounds to me like we offered same or very close money.

The way I read the NFL.com report, he also gets a $13 mil signing bonus. If correct, that would put him just over $10 mil/year.

Gabbert should sign in a few days
“Jaguars’ owner Wayne Weaver told the Times-Union today, in rather matter-of-fact fashion, that he expects Gabbert to sign his contract in the next couple days”
Also Marcedes is a no show:
“As for Lewis, who isn’t expected to show up for training camp until he gets a long-term contract, it’s hard to imagine the Jaguars won’t get something done fairly soon. They have way too much salary cap room to not take of someone who has legitimately blossomed into one of their top-five players.
Now that doesn’t mean general manager Gene Smith should make Lewis the highest-paid tight end in the league. But the Jaguars’ history has been consistent in offering long-term deals to ascending core players whose contracts are close to expiring. The Jaguars don’t like to slap franchise tags on players unless absolutely necessary, and it’s doubtful they’ll allow Lewis to remain in that limbo that players hate."

Here's my ideal situation.
We need another LB. I think we have two good players and a lot of strength at LB. We could use some speed. Sessions wouldn’t be a terrible pick up, hopefully for cheap.
At safety, I think we only need one guy, I’d be fine with sticking Greene back there and I think we’d like to leave room for Prosinski to get on the field. Michael Huff is a quick, coverage safety, a good counterbalance for Greene who likes to get up in the box and hit.
At wide receiver, I don’t know that I would support spending more than 6-8 million TOTAL for a 3 year deal. James Jones if he come that cheap, otherwise meh… we’ll deal.

I'm willing to drink the Kool-ade, but I'm hungry for the truth.
Other LBs
Rocky McIntosh – ESPN Grade 74 – Rocky McIntosh had another very productive season for the Redskins in his fifth year in the league. He is the second most active defender on the Redskins defense. McIntosh is a good combination of size, strength and athleticism for the linebacker position. He shows great range inside out to the ball with quickness and agility to work thru trash. He is better slipping blockers than taking on larger lineman at the point of attack. He is an instinctive player that is effective in combination man and zone coverage’s. Rocky McIntosh is an active playmaker that will likely continue to be one of the mainstays in Washington’s future success.
Omar Gaither – ESPN Grade 71 – Gaither bounced back from injury in 2010 and contributed in a backup role and on special teams. He is instinctive and reacts quickly as a run defender and has a good understanding of route progressions against the pass. He has excellent lateral agility. He is more effective playing the edges than stacking at the point of attack. He can be effective in both man and combination zone coverage.
Jameel McClain – ESPN Grade 69 – McClain had a breakout year in 2010 as the Ravens’ starter on the strong side. He is a short, powerfully built player with good strength and power. He lacks great speed but shows deceptive quickness and range to the ball. He has improved his ability to read and react quickly as plays unfold. He still gets out of position at times but can set the edge versus the run. He is better attacking the line of scrimmage than dropping in coverage and is limited defending the pass. McClain flashes some pass-rush ability but needs to continue to expand his moves and counters to become an impact player. McClain is a good player with limitations, but he brings toughness and attitude to the Ravens defense.

As would I
The Redskins’ front office has reportedly “wavered” on the merits of re-signing free agent LB Rocky McIntosh.
McIntosh was ill-fitted for the new 3-4 defense, and he fared poorly in the coaching staff’s 2010 evaluations. Given what we know about the Redskins plans, McIntosh is a poor bet to return.

BTW - ESPN Said this about James Anderson
Grade – 78 – Anderson has adequate size for the position along with excellent long speed and good quickness, agility and body control. He is a very active linebacker who has learned how to read blocking schemes, and is becoming quick to locate the level of the ball and step up to make the play in the hole. He can deliver a good pop when he’s taking on blockers but is still more effective when playing off the edges. He gets excellent depth in his pass drops but still needs some work on his route recognition and ball skills.
And Rotoworld (though a week old)
The player rep for free agent OLB James Anderson confirmed that his goal is to work out a deal with the Panthers during the three-day exclusive window for negotiations.
“James has expressed an interest to me to remain in Carolina. I’m going to do everything in my power with (GM) Marty (Hurney) to make that happen,” the agent said. “Marty expressed prior to the lockout that James is a priority. We’ll work over the 72 hours to try to get that done. Otherwise, we’ll have many other suitors.” Jul 20, 9:26 AM

I never saw why Weddle got so much hoopla anyway...
….I mean the dude is legit, but I’ll take Landry over him. I would rather see Landry hitting people while wearing teal than Weddle. Plus, you know learning from Rex Ryan has got to rub off on you. Ron Rivera’s a good one, but I’ll take the guy that taught Ron a defense over Ron Rivera.
Wait why don't we skip the OLB and grab Johnathan Josepeh.
This may sound stupid, but our base defense will be the nickel. Joseph and Mathis on outside, and Cox as nickel. It’ll be good against passing teams, and will limit passing, then Alualu, Knighton, and Posluszny is as solid as solid can get up the middle.

Not last season

Rushing Yards Per Attempt in Jacksonville Loss: 5.14 yards/attempt
100 yard games in Jacksonville Loss: 7/8 (87.5%)
Rushing Yards allowed in Jacksonville Loss: 157.38 Yards/Game

We ranked 22nd in the league last year against the run
I wouldn’t exactly call that solid

well that's closer to solid
then the pass, we eliminated Peyton Hillis, besides a late run almost eliminated CJ2K, and Arian Foster didn’t get over 100 in 1 game. But Knighton declined tords the end, and the middle didn’t have a wall.

•Houston and Jacksonville lost out on a player they’d at least inquired about and should have been chasing hard. San Diego safety Eric Weddle resigned with the Chargers. Kevin Acee reports the five-year deal is worth $40 million with $19 million guaranteed. Pete Prisco tweeted that Houston was a late player Tuesday night but that Jacksonville never made an offer.

…The Chargers locked up the 2010 Pro Bowl selection by agreeing to terms on a five-year, $40 million deal, NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora reported, citing a league source. Weddle receives $19 million guaranteed and a $13 million signing bonus…
Softens the blow to my hopes if
the $10+ mil/year turns out to be the right figure
Ive heard that his agent said he would be the highest-paid safety, and
that’s what NFL.com says too. The only way that could be true (Berry siged for 10 mil average) is if the $13mil signing bonus is on top of the $40 mil/5-years.
But I keep saying " IF" because everyone else is saying $40 mil total.

not with the Jags...with the level of player and amount of money apparently

Free Agency 2011 – Poz to the Jags
July 27th, 2011 | Author: Khaled Elsayed
So free agency is underway and we’ve already seen some pretty big moves. Some of them have been quite shocking, and others have been pretty much expected since as long as can be remembered.
.
And some of them weren’t really on my radar, but then they happened and you can’t help but think, ‘yeah that makes an awful lot of sense’.
.
The one deal that especially made me feel that? Paul Posluszny to the Jaguars.
.
If reports are be believed (and I’m an idealistic sort of chap who doesn’t think anyone would ever lie to him), the former Bill has signed on for six years. For how much money is anybody’s guess, but as one of the top free agent linebackers you can’t fault the Jags for making a splash on day one.
.
The Jaguars needed linebacker help. They have struggled the past couple of years by getting guys (Justin Durant, Clint Ingram and Kirk Morrison) who just aren’t suited to an every down linebacker role. The man known as ‘Poz’ is, and it’s a great move for all involved.
.
At Home in a 4-3
The Bills wanted to keep their star linebacker. They’re not a talent rich team who can afford to lose good football players. But sometimes a player just isn’t going to excel in the system you’re implementing. The Bills ran something akin to a hybrid last year (with far more 4-3 looks), with the former Penn State linebacker playing at either an inside linebacker spot in a 3-4, or outside linebacker role in a 4-3.
.
It didn’t work for him.
.
For whatever reason, Posluszny didn’t play all that well. He certainly wasn’t anywhere near the level he was in 2009. Being moved from the middle linebacker spot seemed to have a negative impact on his play, with his grade dropping significantly as the Bills alternated their schemes. It’s rumored the Bills will be less reliant on a 4-3 that they didn’t want to, but had to use in 2010, and more committed to a 3-4 that they didn’t have the personnel for last year. The retention of Shawne Merriman and drafting of Marcel Dareus seem to indicate as much.
.
With that in mind, Posluszny isn’t worth as much to them, as he is to a team married to a 4-3 defense.
.
What he can do
Maybe I’m a tad generous, but I’m giving Posluszny a bit of a pass for 2010. He made a lot of tackles (and didn’t miss many), but really struggled adapting to his new role in the Bills defense. No, when I’m evaluating him I’m looking to what he did as a conventional MLB in 2009. And Jags fans, you’ll be happy to know he was superb.
.
A truly complete player, we live in an age where it seems 75% of MLBs are just sideline to sideline, tackle number guys. You ask them to cover a zone, or track someone and they just don’t have it in them to do it. Posluszny isn’t that type of guy. Even after returning after breaking his arm, he didn’t allow any touchdowns and picked up three interceptions, with just 64.5% of throws against him being complete (very low for a linebacker). He’s utterly comfortable in coverage and it shows.
.
That’s a very nice quality to have, and one that works exceptionally well with what we can do in run defense. He rarely gets caught out of position, and is a very reliable tackler. Sure, he may not shed blocks like Patrick Willis, but then who does? What makes Posluszny one of the better middle linebackers in the league is how complete he is, and he’s exactly what the Jaguars need.
.
Win-win
Bills fans may be feeling a bit like a scorned ex-lover, passed over for a sexier model who lives in a warmer climate. In some respects they have been given the rebuild job their team is undergoing. But fundamentally as good a player as Posluszny is, he’s not right for where you’re going. It was a break up in the best interests of all parties, and you’ll meet someone who may not have the same rep as Poz, but can do a job in your 3-4 hybrid just as well. So take heart in that.
.
As for Jacksonville? Well when you treat Posluszny right (put him in a 4-3), he’s a tremendous asset and will serve you well. In the long run, the Bills, Jags and Posluszny himself, will all be grateful for the decisions made on the 26th July 2011.

1 more LB off the board.
Quincy Black | OLB 2010 Team: Tampa Bay Exp: 4 years
Analysis: Black — the No. 5-rated linebacker available in free agency, according to NFL.com’s Pat Kirwan — will stay in Tampa, agreeing to terms on a five-year deal worth $29 million (with $11.5 guaranteed), a league source has told NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora. The Buccaneers had two starting linebackers on the free-agent market (Barrett Ruud is available, too). Black recorded 61 tackles, two sacks and an interception while starting 10 games for Tampa Bay in 2010.

Clint Session - ESPN Rating 77 (Anderson 78)
When healthy, Session is a very active linebacker who shows good lateral range as well as the ability to get depth in his zone drops. He can redirect and close on the ball from zone coverage and will show a good burst to close on tackles. He is slightly undersized and can struggle when trying to take on blockers and shed in time to make the play. He is an explosive tackler who can roll his hips to unload and will drive the ball carrier back.
Ignore the hype; look at the results.

Prisco says
I know not everybody loves him, but he says Breaston is set to go to KC – S&%T! Says scoots say Whitner, Pool, Bigby can’t cover, We better get Landry! He also says Jags really like Session, he is most likely the guy at OLB.
Those guys (IMO)
Whitner and Bigby can’t cover.
Pool is decent but had health problems in the past.
Roman Harper is moving up my imaginary, all import safety board, but I bet the Saints keep him.
Here’s a guy who could not suck as bad as they did last year – Husain Abdullah (Grade 68)
Abdullah was the second-most active defender in the Vikings’ secondary in 2010. He is a good combination of size, strength and athleticism for the safety position. He has some athletic limitations but is a tough, competitive player who wins with strength and toughness. He shows good instincts and reacts well in run support as well as in zone coverage. He has good ball skills and anticipates well to make plays on the ball. He lacks great burst and speed and is a bit of a liability in pure man coverage schemes, but appears to know his limitations. Abdullah was solid in 2010 but will have to perform well early in 2011 to secure a starting position.

Not sure
Found this:
Free agent SS Dawan Landry wants to re-sign with the Ravens.
“I’d rather be a Raven,” Landry said. “I feel like we’ve built something here, and there’s great chemistry on the team. I think we’re almost at that next level. A play here and a play there and we would’ve been in the Super Bowl.” Landry will likely get a higher offer elsewhere, so that sentiment will be put to the test

Saw that last night.
But the rather be a raven isn’t rather then Jaguars, it’s rather then free agency. He wants to resign, but the Ravens arn’t going to give big money to another safety. So unless he wants a small contract, he’ll probably be out of Baltimore.

i wouldnt mind brodney poole, dashaun goldston, chris carr, josh wilson, ehll, even eric wright at this point……….
I never think about Eric Wright - Good corner on bad team
But just saw he may have some baggage –
Strengths:
Eric Wright has great size and is probably the best athlete in the draft at the cornerback position. He has terrific reactions and the agility to react to receivers. He is physical at the line of scrimmage and uses his hands well to knock receivers off their routes. Good ball skills and times his jump well to deflect balls and make interceptions.
Weaknesses:
If it was not for off the field issues, Wright would be a definite first round pick and possibly the first cornerback taken. He does rely on his natural athleticism too much at times, which can allow him to give up the big play if he misreads the QB. At times he will go for a big hit instead of wrapping up.
Overall:
Eric Wright started his collegiate career at USC before legal troubles, including rape allegations and charges for possession of the drug Ecstay, forced his transfer to UNLV. Wright is an elite cover corner – probably the best man corner in the entire draft. Wright’s long speed is ideal and he is a very fluid athlete. If Wright can stay out of trouble off the field and improve his tackling, he could become one of the top CBs in the league.
Ignore the hype; look at the results.
I think Gene will love him
Especially the part about rape allegations and the ecstasy possession lol
