I know I'm in the minority here. Eric Weddle played great last year against the AFC South. He had double digit tackles against the Titans and picked off Peyton and took it back to the house for a TD. However, I don't believe Weddle is the best safety available for our defense.
The Jaguars need a safety that can cover like a corner. Now more than ever with Hasslebeck signing with Tennessee. He simply torches our defense. We already have a SS that tackles better than most in Greene. Weddle is good at covering and good at tackling. He is not great at either imo. The Jags are better off getting Michael Huff who has great cover skills. He is currently peaking in his career and would be an ideal fit along with Greene. Huff is just plain fast and makes good decisions in space. He is what we envisioned in Reggie Nelson. The difference is that Huff can tie his own shoes. He also take better angles in tackling. He is not as solid as Weddle in space against a good RB. Huff can, however, cover those big body receivers which nobody on our team has ever been able to do. He'd lock down those slot guys in Indy. The undersized Weddle does not excel in that area.
I lot of speculation has been about our Jags and Dawan Landry. Baltimore's Landry does put some fear into TE's and WR's coming over the middle. Landry is also tackling machine. Is he really the cover guy we want against 3 top tier passers? I don't believe that to be the case. Ed Reed is the man picking people off in Baltimore. It hasn't ever been Landry. Granted Landry is an upgrade over what we have now. He isn't the long term solution.
