Report: Jaguars Agree to Terms with Dawan Landry
According to Vito Stellino of the Florida Times-Union, the Jacksonville Jaguars have agreed to terms with former Baltimore Ravens safety Dawan Landry.
The Jaguars have reached an agreemen in principle with safety Dawan Landry of the Ravens and he figures to step in and start. Landry is fthe fifth UFA to agree to terms, joining linebackers Paul Posluszny and Clint Session, guard Jason Spitz and punter Matt Turk.
As Stellino mentions, I would expect Landry to be an opening day starter. The only question is, which safety position will Landry start at and who will start opposite him? Yesterday in practice, Michael Hamlin and Don Carey were manning the two starting safety positions. Many feel that the Jaguars are high on safety Courtney Greene, who's in the mold of the classic strong safety position, which is the position most feel Landry is best fit for.
Landry will add a veteran leadership presence to the defense, and comes from an ultra-aggressive playmaking defense in the Ravens. Landry has started at safety for the Ravens since 2006 and has 9 interceptions in his career. He's known for being a sure tackler and big hitter.

It depends on if we find a free safety
if we do then Landry can play SS, if not FS.
"thanks for hating"
Another option
is that we can sign Carlos Rogers, move Mathis to free and Landry at strong or atleast have Rogers as a strong nickel…….it provides plenty of flexibility
Jaguars don't want to put Mathis at
FS.

Mathis
has lost a step on the edge and is better suited for FS bc he loves 2 jump routes…..the organization knows this but will only make the move with the right pieces. Sign C Rodgers anyway we need CBs
Regardless
Of whether he has lost a step or not, you can’t mash square pegs into circular holes and expect it to turn out well. Think people would have learned their lesson last year with Don Carey.

I like this
I like this a luhht:

Looks like Gene is looking for maulers who are not afraid of contact. Still want to see one really nasty defensive end or a good receiver.
What's next?
receiver, end, linebacker depth? maybe a tackle, and we slide Britton to guard.
"thanks for hating"
I think Britton stays where he is, but the shoulder thing is a concern no doubt
unless he does the Lethal Weapon thing and rams it back into place
he says it isn't
bothering him anymore, he said he used to wake up at night, and it was dislocated, and he had to pop it back in. After the surgery it doesn’t do that anymore.

Great news!
I have to be to work in 30 minutes and this is what I wanted to see before I left. I’m glad Gene could make it happen. I think that should everyone stay healthy, this defense will be closer to being middle of the pack than closer to the bottom in the statistical ratings this year.
I’m with you Blair, this is my favorite signing thus far also.
We have some punishment
if you go to the middle of our defense again.
He wont cost more than Weddle and probably a little less than Mikell
probably something like Mannings contract to the Texans. So like 5-6 million per year
the point is
if no one wants him, he will be a little cheaper and we need a starting FS. He fits that mold and he will play well with all the talent we added.
2010 Grade: +13.9
Key Stat: Huff finished with the 3rd best cumulative coverage grade and was among the best blitzing safeties as well.
Behind the numbers: Plugged into a more comfortable spot than in his previous stint playing closer to the line, Huff has settled in to the deep job in the Raiders’ single-high look and had his best season to date. Among the league’s best pure cover safeties, he’s skilled enough to slide up and bump when needed – he went head-up with receivers on more than 100 snaps this season, including some time spent covering for Nnamdi Asomugha’s injury. To top it off, he displayed his nose for the QB with four sacks and seven other disruptions in 29 blitz opportunities.
Great signing
now i hope we can land a genuine veteran FS.
Our D is vastly improved already.

A ravens fan I respect said about landry
He plays well against run and is solid in coverage except occasionally against the deep ball w/speed WRs. Blitzes great. We called him the hammer from time to time he has started every game since he was a rookie in 06 out of 5th round except for 08 when he had spine injury but thats long gone. Played FS for 6 games when Ed was hurt and never got exposed. Outstanding work ethic and attitude. Dont think ive ever seen him give up.
Sounded like a gene guy and note the free safety bit

Dashon Goldson
has been drawing interest from the Raiders, all I can find.
Carlos Rodgers, Malcolm Floyd, or Chris Carr would be nice. We have the money why not pay Chris Carr 3-4 a year, to be our nickel.
"thanks for hating"
if he gets paid what does it matter
how about he comes in and “you will compete for a starting role” but he edns up losing and gets the nickel.

As much as
I agree with you, he has come out and bluntly said that he will only sign where he sees to be the starter.
I think it’s completely idiotic of him to throw away the money we would give him.
if hes getting paid more money than anywhere else he would sign
I dont understand why we wouldnt move Mathis to FS if we signed a guy like Carr because Mathis makes his living by jumping routes for interceptions.
Yeah supposedly
His services have come down to a bidding war between OAK and SF

I agree our D will be improved
but I think everything hinges on Kampman’s knee. Lane, Hart, and Morgan may step up this year, but as of right know they are just potential. And Kampman is the only sure thing. I don’t know about anyone else but that scares me.
sign a DE then
Odom, Jenkins, or trade for Umenyiora and resign him. Just throwing out ideas
Umenyiora is intriguing
but I don’t think Gene is willing to give up the draft picks to get him. And I don’t blame him
How about Cullen Jenkins at LE.
I know he ahs the size of a DT, but the guy is amonster.
"thanks for hating"
thats what I thought
but he got 7 sacks, as a 3-4 end…

INTERESTING
(IN REGARDS TO THE SALARY CAP FLOOR) *Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer has cleared up a detail of the salary floor issue: While there is a league-wide minimum floor this season, there are no minimums for each teams. Individual teams do not have salary floors until 2013..
In other words, as long as teams like the Jets and Cowboys are willing to throw towering piles of money at players like Nnamdi Asomugha, Mike Brown and the Bengals are allowed to take their $50 million in available money and just take it home.*

15:53 SIGNING! It was a done deal earlier by all accounts, but the Jags have confirmed the signing of Dawan Landry to a five year deal. No news on the amount yet. Landry is a nice story. Came into the league, played well and then a very serious injury. Got back onto the field and looked a shell of himself his first back. One year removed from injury he finishes our number four ranked safety on the year. Only concern is if the Jags try to use him at FS. Because you know, he’s not.
"thanks for hating"
So I guess we’ll still be in the FA market since he’s apparently not a FS

i have no idea

Who feels we need to get somebody else??
I do, Spend that money honey.
Huff is definitely out of the equation = Jags don’t like him
Goldson = S.F. is battling out with somebody to retain him.
Pool= I think the Jags like him
Cromarie= He’ll ask a lot, we can’t afford him.
C. Jenkins= I’d love to see him in teal but I think Dallas or Minnesota will get him.
Insider report!!
Grade 75
Expert’s Take Pool has excellent size and athleticism. He has good instincts and ball skills to jump routes but tends to break up the play more than make the interception. He runs well and shows good range in pursuit. Given his size, he isn’t very physical in run support but does get ball carriers on the ground. Pool is solid and should continue to develop but is unlikely to be an impact player.
lets sign him
but why did the Jets complaing about their safetys?
"thanks for hating"
by rhettchrystal on Jul 29, 2011 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions
Pool is genuinely a FS, i think he was drafted in the second or third round in 2005 by the Browns and never lived up to the hype. Played for the Jets last season as a FS started and got benched after few games, then was moved to SS and he actually played very well since then.
He is good, better than what we have at FS position, but more of a hitter and run stuffer than a coverage guy.

I think we can scratch off 7, 8, and 9
The Jags are mostly happy with the WR situation. unless someone falls into our lap, we’ve got guys we like in Hill, Thomas, now shorts, and Dillard(?).
The DE is only necessary if Lane/Hart aren’t progressing and it sounds to me like they are, and we drafted a CB to play slot and made a pass at Carr also.
I see FS as a maybe thing cuz we do have Greene and or Prosinski, one of whom deserves a shot to be on the field (probably Greene). So yeah, if we lock up Marcedes I’ll be totally satisfied.

into Chris Carr, I am guessing they still looking for somebody else. Let’s hope!
I really, really don't think it's gonna happen
I would be happy if it did, but remember they didn’t want to bring Carr in to compete for a starting spot. They didn’t even give him a false hope to reel him in. From what I’ve read they were very straightforward about wanting him to be the nickle (PK I think?). Just seems that if they were trying to bring in a starter they would have at least told Carr he had the chance.
I think we need to sign a DE , a WR and yet another OL.

Just signed Drew Coleman
Nickel corner from the Jets, 28 years old. 3 years $7.4 million max
Why isn't...
there anything on jaguars.com about the Landry signing? They have an article on there about Poz, Sessions and Spitz joining the team and Gene’s take on what they will bring to the Jaguars.
I love what he said about what it takes to be a Jaguar: "I tell the scouts, ‘Talent identifies the prospect, then adding character and competitiveness identifies a Jaguar,’"
And finishes that by saying this: "I really believe the players we’re bringing in – what we’ve identified in them as players and as people, when they walk into our locker room they’ll identify that in our players – and in turn, they’ll identify it in them.
This man really knows the right way to go about building a team with a championship mentality.
theyve agreed in principle on a deal
they havent figured out the numbers yet so he technically hasnt signed and thats why Gene hasn’t said anything yet. Once he does sign, I’m sure there will be an article about him and Coleman up there and anyone else they may pick up.
