Starting Free Safety already on the roster
If anyone hasn't checked out the special Saturday edition of O-Zone, I recommend you go check it out. John Oesher quotes Gene as saying that our starting free safety is already on the roster. As many of us have been hoping we would sign another safety, this is of obvious relevance. After scanning the roster of possible candidates it would appear that it will be three way competition between Don Carey, Chris Prosinski, and Terrell Whitehead. With Matt Estrada and Michael Hamlin being the long shots.
Personally I think it's going to come down to Prosinski and Whitehead. Whitehead drew a lot of praise last year as a young guy who could eventually develop as a starter. He has the size and measurables to play the position and it seems like the time is right for him to step up and show us what he's got.Prosinski was taken is the 5th round of this year's draft. After putting up jaw-dropping numbers at his pro-day he immediately became a fan favorite of many on this site; myself included. It would appear he is going to be given a legitimate shot to win the starting safety spot opposite of Dawan Landry, let's see what he can do.
Don Carey has drawn the ire of almost every Jaguar fan out there. Don Carey took over the starting free safety job in the middle of last season after making a position switch from corner to safety. Needless to say it did not go to well. Many fans have demanded he be cut, and questioned Gene Smith's decision to keep him on the roster. I think we should perhaps give Don Carey a mulligan for last season. After all he spent his entire rookie season on IR and is making a position switch as previously stated.
I don't know who is going to win the free safety job, but whoever does is likely to experience some growing pains. But hopefully develop into the playmaker we've lacked at that position for years. I'd love to hear everyone's thought on who they think it will be. Thanks for reading my first fanpost.

Don't count out Don Carey
last year was his first year playing the position, a strong pre-eseason and a strong camp, he may the best out of the 3.
"thanks for hating"
he needs to be a jar on the shelf as CB
he might be one of those phantom IR guys who get injured in training camp.
Um......He's GARBAGE....

Already on the roster??
Oh no were, DOOOOOMED!! <—Sarcasm
Seriously though, I think the Starting job will come down to Whitehead or Prosinski. From the reviews it sounds like Estrada has been making plays but its hard to say a UDFA would win that job outright. As far as Carey goes, I’m not counting on him to make it thru training camp.

Umm...wtf am i missing?
Did everyone just go dumb? All along the Front office has been viewing Landry as our FS…
where are you getting your info?
any interview I’ve heard Landry going to play SS for us. He doesn’t really have the great coverage skills to play FS.
Wrong.. It's been stated he will be SS.

from what I hear
Most camp reports say either Chris Prosinski or Matt Estrada is always near the ball or making plays. I don’t know if they are getting more reps than Don Carey and Terrel Whitehead or just making more plays. Don and Terrel have the lockout on their side. If the rookies learn the defense fast, they will shoot past at least Don Carey who MJD said corners don’t like to hit(speaking about Don Carey during a interview on nfl.com) . You cant be bad in coverage and tackling. At least Chris and Matt will come up and hit.
Landry is going to play SS with Greene as his backup
Gene has said he wants Landry at SS and having Greene as his backup makes SS a position of somewhat strength which sounds weird to say. Anyways, after watching highlights of Estrada, I really liked him. He reminded me a lot of Prosinski. In the end though, I see Prosinski winning the job. He has decent coverage, but the thing that i think will get him the job is his playmaking ability. The guy is a straight up athlete who has a crazy vert and broad jump. He is also a fairly hard hitter so he can make plays in the air. I also think some people don’t know or just forgot that the guy apparently had a chance to go to Harvard, but chose to play football at Wyoming. He is very intelligent obviously and has a ridiculous desire to play the game(I mean hell, the guy passed up Harvard). I think he will have growing pains since he is obviously a rookie, but his athletic ability and smarts give him a better chance than Carey had last year. Another thing is that whoever starts will automatically look better since we have better LBs and a NFL caliber S next to him. Our pass rush will continue to improve and our run defense will be better forcing teams into obvious passing downs. There will be a better pass rush with Coleman and Landry in the game as well on passing downs which will have a big impact on some 3rd downs. Also, Mel Tucker is calling plays instead of Del Rio. I dont really know what effect this will have, but I would imagine he would be better since his entire focus will be on play calling. My whole point is that whoever starts will be in a great position to succeed when being compared to our FSs last year.
I think having Landry starting next to whoever ends up the FS
will help tremendously. Sort of like what Sammy Knight did for Nelson.
+1000
you and me are in the minority somehow. i understand everyone thinks landry is only a SS, but all sites even BCC said originally he played FS some. So he has experience and to think our two best safeties, Landry n Greene, are both gonna play SS is obviously a waste of one of their talents. I would expect Landry at FS and Greene SS
The problem with that lineup is that
you both guys are essentially the same type of player. The hard-hitting come up in the box type safety. Neither really excels in coverage albeit Landry is much more refined than Greene. We need a rangier play-making type safety to be paired with Landry.
You want a player at a position he excels at. Landry is a very good SS who was asked to play A BIT of FS for lack of option at that time. Greene is a heavy hitter, has the upside, but he was not that good as some people make it sound.

I have to admit, when I first heard that comment by Gene, I instantly figured “Mathis” was the guy he had in mind. I had figured the Jags were either planning to add a really good CB via FA, such as a Jonathan Joseph, or via trade; Asante Samuel, and then Mathis would be moved to the FS spot, while the new CB + Cox would be the CB tandem.
Now that Joseph is in Houston & Samuel seems an unlikely target for the Jags, I guess they seem to think Prosinski can do it.
I know Landry has played the FS position before as well.
They're gonna try and get the two best safeties on the field.
Landry is the best. If greene is the 2nd best, he’ll get on the field. If Prosinski is the 2nd best, he’ll probably be the FS.
