FB: Greg Jones, Montel Owens, Brock Bolen (3)

WR: Jason Hill, Mike Thomas, Cecil Shorts, Jarrett Dillard, and Kassim Osgood (5)

TE: Marcedes Lewis and Zach Miller (2)

LT: Eugene Monroe and Guy Whimper (2)

LG: Will Rackley and Jason Spitz (2)

C: Brad Meester and Bradley Vierling (2)

RG: Uche Nwaneri and Kevin Haslem (2)

RT: Eben Britten and Daniel Baldridge (2)

LE: Austen Lane and Jeremy Mincey (2)

RE: Aaron Kampman, Larry Hart, and Aaron Morgan (3)

DT1: Terrance Knighton and D'Anthony Smith (2)

DT2: Tyson Alualu and Leger Douzable (2)

LOLB: Clint Session and Russell Allen (2)

MLB: Paul Posluszny and Michael Lockley (2)

ROLB: Daryl Smith and Kyle Bosworth (2)

CB1: Rashean Mathis and Drew Coleman

CB2: Derek Cox, Rod Issac, and William Middleton Total: 5 CBs

FS: Chris Prosinski and Don Carey (2)

SS: Dawan Landry and Courtney Greene (2)

K: Josh Scobee (1)

P: Brian Saunders (1)

LS: Jeremy Cain (1)

RS: Scotty McGee (1)

It was hard to take Luke McCown off the roster, but I think with how Gabbert's performed so far it could be a viable option. Taking Zach Potter was difficult as well, but necessary since I think the team will take 3 FBs into the season. Will Rackley will be the starter at LG for about the next 10-12 years so I figure might as well start him early like the Jags did with Derek Cox and Terrance Knighton. Also I think Rackley has the desire and the talent necessary to start early. At corner I left William Middleton on the roster because of his added special teams value. I put Chris Prosinski as the starter at FS simply because we have no one else who can play there (outside of Don Carey, of course) and because he's be playing with the first team defense at practice. My real hope is that Dawan Landry can play FS and Courtney Greene can start at SS, where I believe he has a future.

Now on to the Practice squad...

CB Kevin Rutland

DE Marc Schiechl

LB JoJo Dickson

LB Scott Lutrus

OT Cameron Bradfield

RB DuJuan Harris

TE Kyle Miller

WR Armon Binns

The idea of putting Marc Schiechl on the practice squad makes me nervous. I just don’t think he’d last the entire season on the PS before someone comes along and takes by activating them to their team. Especially considering it’s a given that injuries will occur some time throughout the season. I also think Lutrus wouldn’t make it the entire season without getting signed somewhere.

by kjones407 on Jul 30, 2011 9:17 PM EDT reply actions

Personally I'd really like to keep both Schiechl and Lutrus

but unless they play lights out in camp or someone gets hurt, I don’t see them making the roster. And yeah it’ll be hard to keep both on the PS for either part of the season or the entire season, it may be our only chance to keep them

I like the Practice Squad

I dont necessarily like leaving McCown off, but i can deal. I just have two comments. Keeping Middleton for his ST ability in tackling is the same reason why we would keep McGee on the roster. However, McGee as a kick returner would be more valuable than Middleton as a tackler in my opinion. I dont want to cut McGee without ever seeing what he can do for us on kickoffs. Second, I dont know if you just forgot about him or you just think he is literally done since he isnt even on the practice squad, but D’Anthony Smith is nowhere to be seen. Before his Achilles injury he looked like he would be a solid rotation player with Alualu and Knighton. I know most guys don’t come back the same, but I still think he would be a better guy to keep on the roster than Collins. If Collins beats him out than so be it, but I just wasnt sure if you forgot or not.

Whoa.

I can’t believe that I didn’t notice that D’Anthony Smith wasn’t there. Without a doubt, he’s a lock to make the team.

Yeah just noticed that myself lol

can’t believe I left him, but he’s on now

I’d like to keep McCown so Gabbert has another person to learn from but if we can get a 5th or 6th rounder for him, I say trade him and get the picks for next year

by montanajagsfan on Jul 30, 2011 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions

We will keep

McCown. Simple logic suggests that, as soon as Gabbert is ready to play, Garrard will cost too much to keep; leaving only McCown as depth behind Gabbert in 2012 and beyond.

by Ewdtrey on Jul 31, 2011 3:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Right now we have what, $13M tied up at qb?

whereas in years past we’d have about $20M and Gabbert would likely still be a holdout. I think this new CBA bought teams the time to carry 3 qbs.

All I’m sayin is we’re not going to see Brunell/Leftwich again.

by Joe Fisher on Jul 31, 2011 9:33 AM EDT up reply actions

10 on the OL is a bit unnecessary. We’ll prob keep 4 or 5 interior linemen bc Spitz can play any spot on the inside.

I’m also guessing that McCown will be back because dropping an even somewhat capable QB is like giving away money. He’s a quality backup, someone would take him the next day if we dropped him. I also think the team will do what they can to keep Zach Potter on the roster at TE as well.

I dunno if they’ll keep the TE Miller on practice squad. maybe one of the young safeties?

If 2 guys go down

Miller doubles as a LS, if Cain is still hurt come regular season, he’ll make the roster.

Miller

is pretty freakin athletic for a man of his size good for receiving and covering kicks/punts. If we only carry 2 TE’s on the roster he could be our backup on the practice squad and be pretty safely stashed there.

by Ewdtrey on Jul 31, 2011 3:30 AM EDT up reply actions

I think

Vierling, Baldridge, and Haslam are basically vying for 1 or 2 roster spots.
If Bolen can show some punishing blocking ability, I would be worried for Greg Jones’ roster spot.
Somehow I think Terrell Whitehead makes the team, maybe over Don.
I only expect to carry 5 LB’s starters+Cutrera and Allen, with another one like Lutrus on the PS.
Despite what happened last year, and the apparent logjam at WR, I still have a hard time cutting Underwood as he was definitely improving in my opinion.

by Ewdtrey on Jul 31, 2011 4:29 AM EDT reply actions

Also I think

the staff is higher on Estes than Vierling

by Ewdtrey on Jul 31, 2011 4:32 AM EDT up reply actions

We had this G. Jones Brock Bolen conversation last year.

You remember what happened? We kept both guys and greg jones blocked like a freakin dump truck all season.

In all honesty: They’re not cutting Greg Jones.

Just don’t see it. Owens and Bolen aren’t lead blockers.

What happened to Lutrus and Scheichl being locks?

by Alfie Crow on Jul 31, 2011 6:22 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

They possibly could be locks if the play out of their minds during the preseason or someone gets hurt. That being said, would you really like to release a Jeremy Mincey or a Russell Allen to make room for a UDFA with no experience, especially this year? I’m really high on Lutrus, Lockley, and Scheichl but I only see one of them making the roster and I think it’ll happen at LB not DE.

I like your roster

My only questions are: No Zach Miller (or is he the Miller on ST) and no backup at LG? Also taking three FS into the season, I just wonder if we could use the extra roster spot? But overall I really like it

by montanajagsfan on Jul 31, 2011 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions

No Larry Hart?

That’s pretty quick to give up on a guy. I’d drop one of the FS’s and possibly take CJ Mosley instead of Douzable. He looked pretty strong in the oklahoma yesterday.

I don't like reports of all the Zach Miller drops at practice...

So I dropped HIM. Bam. That’s why they pay me the top dollars to make tough decisions like that.

 I wish…

Agree with you about the safeties it was a stretch. So here is part 3.

QB: David Garrard, Blaine Gabbert, Luke McCown (3)
RB: Maurice Jones-Drew, Rashad Jennings, Deji Karim (3)
FB: Greg Jones, Montel Owen(2)
WR: Jason Hill, Mike Thomas, Cecil Shorts, Jarrett Dillard, Armon Binns, Kassim Osgood (6)

ST Montel, Karim, Osgood, Coleman, Estrada, Miller, Middleton, Isaac, etc.

What could of happened; did.

by Mullayo on Jul 31, 2011 9:31 PM EDT reply actions

Hahahaha cold blooded like Gene

Yes Miller’s drops in practice are a concern as was his lack of growth from year one to two. I agree with you that Rackley should start at LG and I think your LB corp is solid. Just one other question: why no Scotty McGee? Or is he on ST?

by montanajagsfan on Jul 31, 2011 10:05 PM EDT reply actions

Never seen him. No-one has...

My reasoning: Don’t need to carry a specialist special teamer because we are so strong there.

Also, I haven’t heard anything about him being good enough to contribute as a corner back.
All those special teamers are on the roster. Plus more exposure for Shorts.

I just noticed Estrada should be cut from the third version too. Probably why you questioned me.

What could of happened; did.
