Premature thoughts on the 53 man roster

I know it's very early to be thinking about who will be around on the Jaguars final roster, but some comments posted on the site in the last few days got me thinking. So what I did was take all the players from last year I'd like to see return and see where that leaves me, then try and trim the team down to the appropriate, 53-man limit. Believe it or not, the rookies ended up pushing out some players I genuinely might have liked to keep. Anyway, here's my predictions for the 53-man roster the way I see it. People in parentheses are players that I'd like to see on the team but I think will wind up getting cut.

Star-divide

Offense (25/53):

QB (3): David Garrard, Blaine Gabbert, Luke McCown

RB (3): Maurice Jones-Drew, Rashad Jennings, Deji Karim

FB (2): Greg Jones, Montell Owens, (Brock Bolen)

WR (5): Mike Thomas, Jason Hill, Cecil Shorts, Jarett Dillard, Kassim Osgood, (Tiquan Underwood)

TE (3): Marcedes Lewis, Zach Miller, Zach Potter

OT (4): Eugene Monroe, Eben Britton, Kevin Haslam, Guy Whimper

G/C (5): Uche Nwaneri, Will Rackley, Vince Manuwai, Brad Meester, John Estes, (Justin Smiley)

Defense (25/53)

DE (6): Aaron Kampman, Jeremy Mincey, Austen Lane, Larry Hart, Derrick Harvey, Aaron Morgan

DT (4): Terrance Knighton, Tyson Alualu, D'Anthony Smith, Leger Douzable

LB (6): Daryl Smith, WLB starter, MLB starter, Russell Allen, Kyle Bosworth, Jacob Cutrera

9 total DBs:

CB (4): Rashean Mathis, Derek Cox, Rod Issac, (William Middleton), Scotty McGee

S  (3):  Courtney Greene, Chris Prosinski, hopefully a free agent.

Swing DB (2): Tyron Brackenridge, Don Carey

Special teams (3/53)

LS: Jeremy Cain  K: Josh Scobee   P: Adam Podlesh

So in the end, I see Bolen, Underwood, Smiley, and Middleton getting cut. It's entirely possible that there will be no free agent at safety, in which case, Middleton will probably be kept around. Feel free to disagree, but this is who I would go with right now.

Haha...I really want him to be good.

I’m just tired of getting my hopes up only to see him on IR again. I am now trying reverse psychology – if I bad mouth him, hopefully he will have a great season.

Is it possible

that the coaches have been stashing him on IR ?

Here's hoping we have NFL football in 2011

by pksiv on Jul 6, 2011 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions

i doubt it.

when they were playing underwood and osgood, im sure they would have rather had dillard out there. I think this year they need to be very cautious in spring training with him and he should be fine. If he gets out on the field i feel like he could be a very good role player. Nothing super great, but a guy who will get 40 catches or so.

I'm not saying he was never injured

just that they may have moved him to IR early rather than have to make a roster move until he was healthy.

You would like to keep Smiley?

He served his purpose, but it’s time to get rid of him. Rackley and Estes will definitely be an upgrade.

We gave up a 7th round pick for him...

I’d rather not have wasted it. Unfortunately, he’s really gonna have to work to stay on this team.

He's a good

player and provides solid depth at a reasonable price. He only leaves because of our younger and cheaper depth.

I think

William Middleton would make it on the roster over Bosworth or Tyron Brack, both of whom are players I really like.

Did you see kurt morrison on nfl totL access?

The way he sounded I got the feeling that he will be back. He just didnt sound like guy who knows he is getting released.

Who knows?

He’s had a lot of time to come to terms with whatever happens.

I’d guess he’s getting put down after his performance last season.

I really hope

The new CBA includes expanded roster size. I think its crazy that only 45 are actually active for games. I think they should add 3-5 more roster spots and have 48-50 active on sundays

by duvaljag on Jul 7, 2011 1:21 PM EDT reply actions

It won't

The only talk about expanding rosters has been if the lockout ends very close to the season and allowing the training camp rosters to be expanded. The regular season rosters won’t be expanded unless they move to an 18 game regular season.

Here's hoping we have NFL football in 2011

I agree about the 53 I feel we need more cover

thoughts:
special teams get even better with Isaac, Prosinski, Scotty McGhee etc..
What about CB Wheatley I thought they were high on him?
Maybe get rid of Whimper and keep Smiley let Rackley cover right tackle?

What could of happened; did.
