Should I be excited about the linebackers?
Should i be excited about our linebackers?
I don't know what to think, Session is a hard hitter who supposedly can't cover, Posluszny is a solid tackler, who supposedly can't cover, and Daryl Smith is a great all around player. By supposedly I mean the player's former fans said so, and Posluszny looked bad in coverage in the New England game. But I must admit Clint Session is a hard hitter, he even had 2 forced fumbles in 10 snaps. That's a 1/4 of last years total from the whole season. I feel if Posluszny can be limited to a zone coverage role(when needed to cover), and most of the time the we can switch to a nickel on passing downs we'll be fine, but on run defense the team should be literary tremendous.
Now I will compare our new linebackers to last years starters.
2010 Weakside Linebacker:
2011 Weakside Linebacker:
Clint Session
How do they compare?
- Neither are good in coverage, mediocre at best.
- Both must be limited to being a two down linebacker.
- Although one is injury prone, one is coming off an injury, that inevitably got him on IR.
- Similar body types
How do they contrast?
- Although Durant isn't a bad tackler, Session is a good tackler, and a very hard hitter.
- While Session was his former team's top linebacker at one point, Durant never seemed to play that well. He had a lot of flashes, but besides that was a bit of a disappointment.
Who is a better player?
Clint Session
2010 Middle Linebacker:
2011 Middle Linebacker:
How do they compare?
- Both are bad in coverage.
How do they contrast?
- Kirk is slow, and Paul is fast.
- Kirk is a decent tackler, and Paul is a good tackler.
- Kirk can barely shoot a gap, and Paul will be all over it.
Who is better?
Paul Posluszny
So clearly they are both upgrades, but how good will they be, that's what we will have to wait for.
* Justin Durant is a Detriot Lion, and another additon to the foundation, as that defense is being built, watch out for those Lions.
* Kirk Morrison is still a free agent, that must mean something. Eagles may be interested.
Am I excited about the Jacksonville Jaguars linebackers? Yes I am

I should have voted no...
just to be the loner. All in all, look for some hard hits and turnovers. Also, look for some teams to romp us in the intermediate passing game. Unless we improve, every team will come in knowing the tape on our seasoned linebackers and they will pass all over us.
This would be different...
… to last year, how? Our LBs have not been good at against the pass for quite some time. I share your concern about pass defense, but still believe this year’s LB group will be better.
I say we actually watch them play, instead of looking at stats.

I don't see stats in here
I have watched Posluszny play because he plays the Jets twice a year, and sometimes plays the giants, and he has played the jags, so ive watched him play, and Session was a Colt, and I’ve watched him play, because we face them twice a year, and the colts are on tv way more then our jags.

I agree
while each individual’s talent matters, you cannot look at their past stats and determine how good they are.
What will matter for our defense is how these guys work together as a team. We need some big energy and big plays, and a true leader on defense. I think we have the right guys to get that going for our defense this year, and thats what matters.

Exhibit A - Kirk Morrison
loved the numbers he put up in Oakland, but what did that do for him here? People say he lost a step after last year. Perhaps there were enough complementary players on those Raiders teams that he did not have in Jax last year.
yeah is it me or
do the colts play every sunday night game? there like notre dame or something the NBC darlings.
did anyone notice casey matthews is starting for the eagles -meanwhile we wasted a 4th round pick on and undersized slow wideout from mount union ??
oh wait he runs great routes
ps do you think chad owens will make it in hall of fame next year ??
so many 40 yard routes in a playbook
If his name was Casey Smith he would not have even gotten drafted.
If you don’t chew Big Red then f*** you...
And f*** Casey Matthews too

seems we have heard this before
Shorts is a smooth, reliable, intelligent receiver prospect who was highly productive against lower competition but lacks a “wow” factor in terms of size, top-end speed and big-play ability
thats from nfl.com web site
cecil shorts has been lighting it up lately
Don’t count him out before he plays a game. Good things come from unexpected places

Is it finally time to draft a QB?

everyone chill
this pete guy is just a SPAM username, going all around SBN
spam
hardly spam just because i dont want jacksonville to get screwed out of our nfl football team -that makes me spam
gene smith made a big deal out of the fact you build your team thru the draft -then we get to draft -there sits a linebacker -so what does he do -pick a wideout from mount union -come on man -isnt tiquan underwood ,jarrett dillard, enough
by the way as far as casey matthews having name of smith and not getting drafted he was two-time All-Pac 10 conference selection following his junior and senior seasons.
Look at our foes in the division...
Excited about the new additions to the linebacker corp, but worried about the fact that the LBs we picked up are all strong against the RUN only. Yes, we face Chris Johnson and Arian Foster 4 times a year or so, but I gotta admit I worry about our LBs getting slaughtered in the midrange passing game. Can Poz keep up with CJ or Arian Foster running a “wheel” route out the backfield, and BURNING us like that rookie RB #22 did for the Pats? (I don’t even want to say his name)..everytime I saw the name on back of his jersey, he was trotting in the endzone…preseason or not, I hate seeing us not compete.
Keep in mind that Indy had dominated our division for over a decade WITH NO RUNNING GAME AT ALL…pretty sure they were at the bottom in ranks in the rushing dept. So, to dethrone Indy..should we have picked up LBs and Landry (all strong against the run) when maybe we should have went after players stronger against the pass? Tired of Andre Johnson, Britt, Wayne, Collie, and all the other WRs lighting us up at will with the air attack. Not saying I know it all, just a casual observation as a concerned Jag fan.

thats why I say
we need Daryl Smith to play those RBs or TEs.

Maybe...
tight ends, but Daryl isn’t fast enough to cover CJ2K or Arian Foster either.
thats when coleman
comes in for session.

Yes
Coleman is gonna be a key piece (X-factor, maybe) in our rejuvenated defense this year. Putting a bunch of good players in the defensive backfield won’t get it done. These guys have to mesh and perform as one cohesive unit. Houston and Indy are gonna be huge tests for the defense this season.
