The loss can be attributed to the fact that the Jaguars bottom 33% weren’t as good and/or as well prepared as the Patriots third stringers. David Garrard threw a pick on a deep ball for Mike Thomas in the Jaguars' preseason win over Atlanta. It was a disappointing play that burned a possession, and in discussing it with Jacksonville reporters Tuesday Garrard said he and Thomas got crossed up. Thomas broke off the route flat rather than at the deeper angle Garrard was expecting.

Jack Del Rio said today "David's our starter," which is something he's said throughout the spring, summer and training camp, even as a legitimate competition brewed in camp. Four days after Gabbert looked fairly rookie-like against the Falcons, Del Rio also answered affirmatively when asked if Garrard would start the season opener. But that doesn't mean he was pleased by everything he saw from Garrard and the Jaguars offense on Friday against the Falcons. Asked if Garrard needs to step up his game, Del Rio said yes.
