Jaguars release Tiquan Underwood, 4 others
The Jacksonville Jaguars have announced the release of five players this morning via twitter.
Jaguars waive 5 players: WR Tiquan Underwood, S Michael Hamlin, LB Slade Norris, kicker Sam Swank, punter Brent Bowden
There is only one of these cuts that surprises me, and that's safety Michael Hamlin. I thought he had had a solid training camp and didn't really see anything glaringly wrong in the two preseason games. I hope however, that this doesn't mean Don Carey will find his way on the roster again... Carey was behind Hamlin in the safety rotation.
Other than that, I think most of these we could see coming. I said last week, I'd have cut Tiquan Underwood immediately following the preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons. He was just stealing reps from the other wide receivers who could actually catch the football. This was the second time Underwood has been released from the roster. He was originally released in 2009 in final cuts and later signed to the practice squad.
The team is now down to 85 players. They will need to reach 80 by 4:00 P.M. EST on Tuesday with the final cut down to 53 due by Saturday, September 3rd.

So Turk really is going to be the Punter
Not a good thing if you ask me. Too old to rely on to be a consiistent punter
He kicked well against ATL....
Hopefully it was just rust in the first game against NE but he did improve and was getting solid hang time on his kicks against the Falcons.

Yeah
I liked what I saw against ATL. Very well positioned punts, planted them within the 10 several times, and I think once within the 5

Since when do you have to be young to punt? lol
by Sylvester.The.Jaguar.fan on Aug 25, 2011 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions
you don't
but you do need to have a reliable leg to consistently get distance. FOr all we know week 4 Turk comes down with severe arthritis and can’t punt anymore
Considering the consecutive games played record is held by a punter,
I wouldn’t worry about that.
I like to watch.

except when they get arthritis or some other muscular ailment that plagues them when they punt

Which is rare
in a kicker. I imagine those troubles happen to them at an older age than at other positions.

I'm a bit surprised by the Hamlin cut
I thought he had solidified his back-up safety spot
Respect My Authoritah
Especially after Whitehead got waived/injured
I didn’t really see another guy on the roster that they would have kept. I guess they really like Don Juan.
I saw that story after I posted this
That’s an interesting dynamic.
I liked Underwood. Unfortunately, he wasn't up to snuff.
So long and thanks for the win in Indy.

Underwood should have been cut last season
He was horrible last year and loves his alligator arms.

Bye Underwood
I agree with Alfie, Hamlin > Carey and if Carey makes the roster I claim conspiracy

Agreed
I think Hamlin deserves a roster spot.

If Issac instantly adjusts to the FS position
and does it well, Carey may still not make the roster.
Underwood deserved that cut, Hamlin I’m surprised as well, but this could mean
Safety:
FS: Landry, Prosinski, Issac
SS: Greene, Estrada
FS: Landry, Prosinski, Issac, Carey
SS: Greene.
Second set is probably better, because a lot of depth, and if Greene goes down, Landry will most definitely slide over, and probably Prosinski starting.
Guys Carey may not be as bad as we think. He may be doing better this year, and there are still 32 players to cut, so that doesn’t mean Carey will make it, but I hope David Jones is cut. We can keep Issac and Carey as two swingbacks, Issac can swingback to play the #4 CB in a dime, and Carey can swingback to play the #5 CB in a quarter.

I heard(or read)
that they(Jags) like how Prosinski was doing before the injury, we’ll see on Saturday.
Hey Joe what do you think about the Jags trying to develop Scotty McGee at Wide Receiver, the guy has speed, 4.37, and is a good punt returner, he can learn how to be a receiver in a day, its not that hard, but he’ll have to develop the route running, and learn how to catch(which he may already know how to), I feel like maybe he can be a Desean Jackson, deep threat, but when het gets the ball shorts, gets a lot of YAC, can do that on the practice squad if he does get cut.

I don't think he can make it as receiver and would not be at all surprised if he gets cut.
Like Alfie said, he’s a one trick pony. We still have too many special teams aces and not enough impact guys.
Honestly, with his skill set, it would not shock me at all to see him returning kicks for the Saskatchewan RoughRiders.
He probably has better hands then Underwood
There were 22 nfl teams at his pro day, so he may still have a job in the NFL.

Thing is there is such a huge difference from college to pro for receivers
I’d like to think if the Jags coaches saw something there with McGee to warrant giving him a shot as a wideout, they’d have done their due diligence in getting him reps. Initially, I believe he was a returner/secondary player.
Nice thought, Rhett, but then again, I was the one wondering if Derrick Harvey could make the switch to OLB.
34 Lb
he could of, didnt he play good in the 34 LB when we switched?

I actually
played with the idea of moving Scotty to WR, but just as a gimmick type on bubbles, end arounds, and maybe a slant or too.
Prosinski hasn't had a chance to prove much yet
But his pro day stats were almost equivalent to Julio Jone’s combine, which blew everyone away.
That’s good enough to say we could see big things from him.

We need depth at every position possible! I love how our coaches are allowing players to learn multiple positions! Having (1) player know how to play (2) positions well is a plus!

I like the idea of trying Scotty McGee at WR, Rhett. Could become a great story and project that would benefit our depth!

I think it would take a very special guy
And a lack of talent on the roster to allow that spot. Tiquan is already that guy, with the difference of maybe carrier vision, and he already plays WR, but we cut him. If we were still the ‘09 Jags I’d go for it…because why not? We don’t have time or roster space for a transition that probably doesn’t have a very high likelihood of success.
good point
but maybe on the p.s.

Alfie, is Underwood still eligible for the practice squad?
It’s just a huge shame to see such awesome speed be so completely unable to catch a ball.

Also, this officially makes Underwood the first Gene Smith pick to be cut.

I guess I mean permanently, since he ended up on the practice squad and was still associated with the team.
This looks final now.

Finally
..glad to see Underwood in an unemployent line somewhere. What a waste of a roster spot. I liked the dude before, but after his case of the dropsies and observing his playful demeanor on the side line, I was ready for him to be axed! So long, farewell!

Glad to see Underwood gone
How balls need to hit you in the hands before you catch one seriously, smh. I hate to see Carey still on the roster, he is pure garbage.

Underwood gone?
PEANUT BUTTER JELLY TIME!
Seriously though, i dont wish him any bad, he just sucked…and was a 7th rounder, so no high expectations anyway.
But he is really bad…i’m glad he was cut, waste of roster spot.
