John Oesher's Jaguars Final 53 per CBS Rapid Reports

Photo

As we all know, John Oesher is the lead writer for Jaguars.com, but he also handles the CBS Rapid Reports for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Recently, he updated with who he thought was in and out on the Jaguars final 53. Let's take a look at his guess.

Star-divide

QB-3- David Garrard, Blaine Gabbert, Luke McCown

No real surprise here, I think this is what most people expected.

RB-6- Maurice Jones-Drew, Rashad Jennings, Deji Karim, Greg Jones, Montell Owens, Brock Bolen

Agin, so real surprises. DuJuan Harris will be a tough cut, but it's possible he could wind up on the practice squad.

WR-5- Mike Thomas, Jason Hill, Cecil Shorts, Jarett Dillard, Kassim Osgood

I actually think the team may keep six receivers, but if it's just five guys, I think this will be the five.

TE-3- Marcedes Lewis, Zach Miller, Zach Potter

I think Joey Haynos has a legit chance to make the roster. He got significant time against the Buffalo Bills.

OL-8- Eugene Monroe, Will Rackley, Brad Meester, Uche Nwaneri, Eben Britton, Guy Whimper, Jason Spitz, John Estes

I tend to think the team might go heavy on the offensive line, so I'd at Tony Moll as a possibility but hard to argue with this list.

DE-5- Aaron Kampman, Matt Roth, Jeremy Mincey, Austen Lane, Larry Hart

I would place Aaron Morgan over Larry Hart. Hart finally showed some pressure against the Bills... in the fourth quarter. He's been woefully unimpressive thus far and it seems like keeping him to save face on a guy you picked a year ago.

DT-5- Terrance Knighton, Tyson Alualu, D'Anthony Smith, Leger Douzable, C.J. Mosley

If the team keeps five defensive tackle, I'd pick Nate Collins as the fifth. I actually think he's played much better than Smith, who hasn't shown a ton coming back from his Achilles injury.

LB-6- Clint Session, Paul Posluszny, Daryl Smith, Russell Allen, Kyle Bosworth, Jacob Cutrera

I agree wholeheartedly with this list of linebackers, hard to argue anyone else.

CB-5- Rashean Mathis, Derek CoxDrew Coleman, William Middleton, Scottie McGee

I'll be shocked if McGee makes the roster over someone like Kevin Rutland or even David Jones. McGee offers one thing and one thing only, but he was also a draft pick in 2010...

S-5- Dawn Landry, Courney Greene, Chris Prosinski, Don Carey, Rod Issac

Depending on if the move to safety is permanent for Issac, this is likely what I would pick for the safety group as well minus Don Carey. I don't know why this team would still hold on to Carey. I'd drop Carey and keep an extra offensive lineman.

ST-3- Josh Scobee, Matt Turk, Jeremy Cain.

No argument here.

I'd drop Bolen and keep a 6th WR

I agree with Oesher on keeping Hart over Moran. Granted Hart hasn’t shown much I still think he has a better chance to develop than Morgan. Morgan just doesn’t seem strong enough to consistently get off blocks.

If it were me

I’d go with just 4 DE’s. Mincey, Kampman, Roth, Lane. Save the roster space for a different position.

I'd drop McGee

and keep a 6th receiver…or Harris at RB

by acedarney on Aug 29, 2011 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

do the Jaguars consider Montell Owens to be

their 4th string TB or their 2nd string FB… or both? If it’s just the former, then that is why Bolen would be kept.

by whaley on Aug 29, 2011 1:25 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Even if it's the former

Can we really afford to keep a 2nd string FB. I’d much rather have a extra WR or OL.

by duuuvaaalll on Aug 29, 2011 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

You keep a 2nd string FB

because he’s a good football player. He can block, catch, run, and play good special teams. Also, you want to keep him around for when Greg Jones gets hurt or goes over the hill.

by Ewdtrey on Aug 29, 2011 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes but you have to be active on gameday

to all of those things. And we have enough special teams aces that he would be hard pressed to ever be active on gameday unless there was a run on injuries.

Respect My Authoritah

by duuuvaaalll on Aug 29, 2011 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Not all of the special

teams aces will make the team. Maybe Middleton won’t make the team. Personally I’d rather take another young CB instead of Middleton.

by Ewdtrey on Aug 29, 2011 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I think I'd rather take a young WR

over Osgood.

by pksiv on Aug 29, 2011 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions

No way

Osgood is a game changer. That’s more than you can say about most any 6th WR.

by Ewdtrey on Aug 29, 2011 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Yup

and Special Teams matters a lot.

Our Special teams gave us some great field position and turnovers last season.

Some may argue that Special Teams alone kept the Chargers out of the Superbowl, seeing as they were rated 1st on Offense and Defense, and near dead last in Special Teams last season.

by SexonvilleShaguars on Aug 29, 2011 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I would agree

that Special Teams where big for us last season and also that they cost the Chargers a spot in the playoffs. But with Kickoffs being far less important this season, and the fact that we have quite a few worthy ST Specialists…

Come on Jaguars. Make this your year!

by pksiv on Aug 29, 2011 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Still

have to think about all the blocking he does on both punt and kick returns, which he does really well. And there is also the punt coverage teams. He’s also a leader and a good run blocker on offense as a WR.

by Ewdtrey on Aug 29, 2011 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

All I'm trying to say is Bolen doesn't see action on gameday unless it's through special teams

I’d rather not spend a precious gameday spot on someone who isn’t on the level of Owns or Osgood. Frankly I’d rather see someone like Hart who not only could contribute on special teams but also see the field on defense.

by duuuvaaalll on Aug 29, 2011 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions

You got the idea right

But even though the rules intent was to allow a third QB to play. What really happened is they got rid of the 3rd QB designation and added a 46th roster spot. What you do with those 46 spots is up to the teams as long as they have 3 players listed as QB’s.

by Ewdtrey on Aug 30, 2011 2:07 AM EDT up reply actions

But...

we have 3 fullbacks on the list.

I think “hang time” Turk just got Owens or Osgood cut or traded.

There is no way they should let players like Moll, Nate Collins, Harris, or Joey Haynos go, while keeping a McGee, Carey, and both Osgood and Owens.

I think I'd probably cut Carey for an OL or WR

Nine in the secondary seems like it would be enough considering we have a few guys cross trained.
I think if you put me on the spot I’d add an OL for the first few weeks then pick up one of our undrafted WRs when Britton comes back.

Thats right

Thats sounds better to me, potter cant catch a darn ball-gone
I think we need another rook receiver to make the roster
Lockley has made some big hits, and darnit we need that(screw goodell and his wussy rules)
And Rutland seems to be in the right place at the right time, on special teams, and thomas can field punts.
I still am hoping we can pick up another WR or DE that has been waived by another team- Mo Stovall-Lions, Brett Swain-Packers, Joe West-Packers, or maybe the lions will get rid of corey williams(big if) and we can get him.
WE STILL NEED SOME FASTER DE’S

I think they need to find a spot for DuJuan Harris.

He will not last on the practice squad and this preseason shows you can not have too many RB’s, especially when you are a run first team. The guy also looked great receiving out of the back field.

by cathousecrazy on Aug 29, 2011 1:42 PM EDT reply actions

what they will have to do I think to get him on

Is the Woodhead Way. RB to WR, but he occasionaly comes back and runs the ball from the backfield. My question does he got the hands? And he is quite short, so that probably won’t work, but I just looked at Danny Woodhead’s height, and hes’ also 5’7". So like I said it may work. Be the #6 receiver, and do end arounds, screens, and quick routes. 4.44 40, that’s good speed, typically not a burner, but he will burn LBs, and may be able to breakaway from some dimebacks. Woodhead’s 40 was a 4.38, so slight speed difference. Woodhead is quicker, and out of his cuts a little faster, but Harris has Woodhead in the vertical by 1/2 an inch(38.5), and Harris has more upperbody strength then Woodhead, and can beat off the press(that sounded inappropriate). 28 bench reps. He can probably make the transition, but the transition would have to happen now, before the season starts, and he would have to be playing by week 2 or 3.

Woodhead plays more back than receiver

Also, measurables don’t indicate a player’s ability to learn a new position. Receiver is one of the most difficult positions to predict because it is not easy to learn and execute your route trees, catch the ball consistently, or feel your way through a zone.

Athletically, he might have the assets you need, but he is built like a back and has probably played there most of his career, given his diminutive stature (not many receivers under 5-9 have much success).

If he makes the roster it will be as a running back

Agree

DuJuan looks promising.

Montell Owens is 5’11" 225, not really big enough to be a FB, and he’s one of the few players that has been with the jags for more than 2 years, but he hasn’t done anything in that time.

If Owens is considered a FB, do we need 3 FBs? If he’s considered a RB, is he better than DuJuan Harris for our offense?

Starting line up on D

DE Kampman
DT Knighton
DT Alualu
DE Roth
OLB Smith
MLB Poz
OLB Sessions
CB Mathis
CB Cox
FS Landry
SS Greene

That’s a pretty good unit. On paper, it looks like a top ten defense.

One life to live, live it to the fullest...

by SDubxl456 on Aug 29, 2011 3:42 PM EDT reply actions

Based on what?

The secondary is largely the same as last year and it is fair to say they were in the running for worst in the league last year. Landry is a good strong safety but he will be playing free safety. Even if Greene is improved, I don’t think you can assert that it is a top 10 defense with Mathis and Cox coming off the crap years they just had.

by cobrakainole on Aug 29, 2011 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Largely the same ?

New FS, 2 new LB’s. New DE in Roth and other DE back from injury.

So if by the same you mean 6 guys who were starters at the end of last season, then yeah, just about the same.

Come on Jaguars. Make this your year!

by pksiv on Aug 29, 2011 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he meant just the back 4

Landry is the only new addition to that cast.

However, the “worst in the league” rating against the pass is not dependant entirely on those 4 guys. Pressure on the QB matters a lot to that rating. We should see those players improve this season, assuming a healthy first team DL can make some commotion.

by SexonvilleShaguars on Aug 29, 2011 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I was referring to the secondary, thanks

But I don’t see how we can assume that the QB pressure is coming. We haven’t seen any evidence of it in the preseason and we seem to be relying greatly on a guy coming off two ACL surgeries and a guy with less than 5 sacks last year.

by cobrakainole on Aug 29, 2011 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions

We won't be depending solely on Kampman

I won’t deny he will be a big part of it, but Alualu will be more of a force of a force this year. Along with some young guys continuing to get better. Plus Landry and Greene don’t have to be All-Stars for the secondary to improve. Just not making as many mistakes will make Mathis and Cox look better.

I agree we will be better

But really it would be hard to be worse. I just don’t think there is any evidence that we will be a top 10 defense other than Jack saying so.

by cobrakainole on Aug 29, 2011 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Should also remember

Greene is an upgrade from what we had at the start of the year too. Think back to when we had Anthony Smith and Gerald Alexander starting for us, with a little Considine sprinkled in here and there.(They did help us win games at times. But they also gave up a lot of yards and TD’s)

by Ewdtrey on Aug 29, 2011 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions

The secondary doesn't play by itself

and one really BAD safety can make a huge difference in the perception of the CBs.

Last year's defense...

would have been completely raped by Roddy and Julio. We did a decent job. Although…“it’s only preseason.”

by CheapSeat on Aug 29, 2011 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Cox played well in the second half of the season

He looks solid right now and I wouldn’t be too concerned about it.

Mathis is a liability man-to-man against some of the faster guys in the league, but he is still a good player.

I think top-15 is possible. Mincey is going to be LDE 1B.

by smy on Aug 29, 2011 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Last Year....

We couldn’t stop the run, and if we blitz a LB their TE/slot would gain 40 yards on us.

Lane and Micey would have been better (Alualu also) if that had any rotation.

you always hear about Freeny/Mathis and Osi etc….when you come in on 3rd down, you have more speed and burst, than if you were just blocked (sometimes double teamed) on 1st and 2nd then need a spped rush on 3rd.

Carey was starting last year, and now is fighting for 3rd string. If Sessions stays healthy you’ll see some scared recievers over the middle, that weren’t scared with Durant or Ingram

Once again depth….. You never know, I still think 1 person will make the final 53 who isn’t even on our team today… Count on it. (on that note, just saw patriots cut a 3 year starter at safety, time to look at film)

by Randycking2 on Aug 30, 2011 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

base on the fact that all the Jags gel on D...

like I said on paper they look good…Roth will bring some good pressure and Poz will make OLB Smith “Buck” a probowler. Better line play by Alualu who will win all the one on one match up with Roth and Kampman (throw Mincey in the rotation) there will be less time for QB to throw the ball…let’s see…against the Falcons there was constant pressure on Ryan and Mathis looked like a stud…week late, Fitzpatrick had ALL day to throw and Mathis looked regular…I think the Jags will have enough to get to the QB with its front four thus making it hard for teams to throw…I fully expect a top 15 defense this year.

One life to live, live it to the fullest...

by SDubxl456 on Aug 29, 2011 7:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not sure about a top 15 defense

mostly because the serious lack of depth on this roster. Injuries are inevitable, they are going to happen to key players. All we can hope for is that they are not season ending injuries.

yeah, this is based on the health of the team...

on paper they look solid. So if they stay healthy, the should be right around top 15…not bad…last year, there were about 6-7 easy 2-3 yard runs (KC Chiefs and Titans) ended up being 50 yard runs…I think Poz is a player that will eat up those tackles in run game and keep those yards to a min….

We’ll see!!!
