Derek Cox could miss Sunday's game
Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Derek Cox was knocked out of yesterdays game after taking a shot to the chest/rib cage area trying to intercept a pass. After the game, Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio told the media he didn't think the injury was serious and again told the media today that Cox wouldn't be out "long term". My sources tell me however, that starting cornerback Derek Cox could potentially miss up to 3 weeks with a rib/chest injury, worst case scenario. The official injury report doesn't begin until Wednesday, but according to my sources I wouldn't expect Cox to practice much, if at all, this week. I also don't expect him to play on Sunday.
If Derek Cox is unable to start Sunday, I'm actually not sure who would start on the outside in his place. I don't think it will be William Middleton or Drew Coleman, both are nickelbacks and not really suited to play on the outside. My guess would be former New York Jets utility defensive back Dwight Lowery, who played significant snaps yesterday at the safety position, when the Jaguars would employ some three safety sets. If I recall, he's started some games at corner for the Jets previously.

Jack says he won't be out "long term"
Alfie says 3 weeks, worst case scenario. I’m not seeing how he’s being “less than totally forthcoming.”

I thought that Middleton played very well
in place for Cox, he made no major mistakes, and played very good man to man.
Can't stand the truth?
Well then we lost...
…we need Cox to play across Mathis; they are both good corners and will help us. If the Jaguars decide Lowery will start at FS, and Landry at SS. Our best bet is doing a rotation between Coleman and Middleton. Coleman played on the outside for the jets a couple games last year, and didn’t do to bad. If Lowery still isn’t starting, I still say Coleman or Middleton, because Landry sucks at corner. To win against the jets, we need Mathis to play on Burress. And Middleton/Coleman on Holmes. We can most likely stop the run.

I would put Mathis on Holmes...with help from safety.
Holmes is much better and more dangerous than Plax, and Shean is our best corner.

I wouldn't give a whole lot of help over the top
Holmes does most of his damage on slants. Mathis is certainly faster than Holmes. Derek has the prefect makeup for a CB to cover Burress. He’s tall and he doesn’t give up a whole lot of jump balls, Plax’s specialty.
but if Cox isn't here
I’d rather put Mathis on him, and our quick guys in Middleton/Coleman to cover Holmes so those slants/screens will be covered. With our strong safety up(not in box), but close to it, so he can eliminate the slant, but still has room to recover on a deep pass…ball is snapped, he starts back pedaling slowly, and if a receiver doesn’t go in on a slant route, to recover and grab the deep zone.

I disagree, Rhett...
I think Holmes is our prime concern at WR, and should be covered by our best CB. Plax becomes a bigger threat in redzone because, as Ewdtrey says he has great leaping ability and height.
I am also worried about who will cover Keller. He is a good receiver and TEs are always our Achilles heel.
Fidelis Ad Mortem
daryl smith can get keller
and i still would rather our best guy on Plaxico, and then put coleman and middleton(in nickel formation) on him.

why our best guy on Burress?
He’s in his mid 30s. Holmes is more dangerous.

I think
that any guy who is quick enough can cover Holmes, Burress is a big receiver, a big play, get up and make the play kind of receiver, and he poses more of a threat.

I was a bit confused on the play Cox got hurt....
and was hoping someone could clarify. I admit to not knowing all the rules. In fact, I probably know just enough to be dangerous. I also have to admit this play occurred on the opposite side of the field from our seats. To me, it appeared that Derick was pulled out of bounds, and not allowed to land in bounds. If that was the case, I thought it still counted as a reception (or in this case an interception). I thought some of you in the know might clear this up for me. Thanks!
Rules Change
You would’ve been correct a few years ago. They changed the force-out rule. Now, no matter what, you have to get down in bounds.
so now i got a question because i do remember something about this rule..
… could Mathis have pushed Britt out of bounds on the TD play?
Yes, but...
it would have to be AFTER Britt touched the ball, otherwise PI… but yes, he could have simply pushed him hard enough to not let him get 2 feet in bounds and that’s completely legal. What he can’t do, like someone said above, is ‘catch’ the receiver and carry him out of bounds.
Rib Injuries
Man, I hurt my ribs about six weeks ago, not a break or even hairline fracture, just bruising. I was questionable for breathing for a week or two, much less playing professional football.
A buddy of mine cracked my rib once.
I was blacked out and only know about it because another friend was taping us being idiots. I thought I was gonna die the next morning, and it was terrible for weeks. I couldn’t imagine playing football like that.
And in an upset, I am still friends with that guy, haha.
I like to watch.

Does open heart surgery count?
Never broke my ribs but did have them sawed through and wired back together. lol Coughing almost brought me to tears. And a sneez made me think my ribs were coming out of my chest. I’m sure bruised or cracked is just as bad.
Indeed
Rib injuries can be seriously debilitating… and it’s pretty much impossible to “tough it out” seeing as any movement you make does involve the rib cage.

The good thing is
it’s mostly just pain management you have to deal with. Breaking my leg is another situation I really can’t just tough out. But I’ve toughed out a rib injury.
YIKES!!!
against Plax and Santonio, you need the best possible pairing of CBs. anyone see the later portion of last night’s game when the cowboys top 3 CBs were out?!!
Well Del Rio did say
We would be good against the run.

Losing Cox really hurts
He is our best corner right now. Mathis is still a solid player, but Cox is coming into his own and is athletically superior at this stage. I don’t know that Mathis has the lateral quicks to stay with Holmes, though I agree he is their best receiver. We are going to have to pressure Sanchez or we are in trouble.
And we will need more than 16 points
Run defense should shine against the Jets
We are built to play against a team with this mentality. I will be worried about the Texans zone-blocking scheme and teams that like to run a lot of draws and screens.
Then again, our nickel package did a good job against the Titans running game on several occasions.
Marcedes Lewis....
How is he doing ?

There is...
One silver lining in that play in which Cox got hurt. He made a great play on the ball. Thats good to see him really competing beginning his third year.

I pondered it
for like a second, but I doubt the coaches would trust him considering the little time he’s had in the system and at the CB position in general on our team.
I thought Mathis looked awful! Reading above comments am I the only who thinks that? The drive where Titans score they used and abused him (2nd titans score). Mathis saw the ball coming and turned and ran at the reciever and didn’t even try to defend or deflect the ball.
