Source: Blaine Gabbert will start on Sunday

Photo

According to my sources, I have learned that rookie Blaine Gabbert will start on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. It will be Gabbert's starting debut on the road, his official debut was in mop up time on Sunday against the Jets.

While Jack Del Rio played coy on his radio show about the Jacksonville Jaguars starting quarterback position, after Luke McCown threw his fourth interception on Sunday against the New York Jets and was pulled in favor of Gabbert, it was done. The Panthers are a good team for Gabbert to make his debut against, as the team should be able to give a heavy dose of Maurice Jones-Drew and allow the rookie to ease into it. It will also give a nice Blaine Gabbert vs. Cam Newton look, especially since there was so much debate about how the top quarterback was entering the draft.

Exactly

I can handle losing games watching a rookie QB improve. I can’t be excited about watching a backup QB play terrible football.

I said something similar to my friend (And fellow season ticket holder) the other day and he agreed.

If Luke is starting, I expect to compete for the playoffs. He’s got experience, he “out-performed” the other QBs in camp, and JDR and Gene both said he represents their best chance to win.

If Blaine starts, I’m ok with a losing season as long as he shows improvement through the year.

by KyleMack13 on Sep 20, 2011 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I personally think JDR knew Luke was going to get exposed in game 2 and he would have to start the Rook.

Thus having an excuse to stay.. Not a conspiricy theory..Just a guy with a CYA attitude..

Except that it was Gene’s call to cut Garrard. Del Rio has control over who plays, but Gene makes the roster decisions. I think Del Rio gets the axe if the team flops at the end of the season again.

I'm sure JDR has a big hand in those decisions.. After all he is the HEAD COACH.

David Garrard was a Del Rio decision. He went to Gene Smith and said he wasn’t going to start. They determined if he wasn’t going to start, they couldn’t keep him on the roster at $8 million.

It would bring some legitimacy/respect to the underrated defense, as well as throw a wrench into the Cam-Newton-is-the-greatest-rookie-QB-of-all-time bandwagon. Plus that whole thing where the Jaguars, like, win and stuff.

The Media wont give us Credit....

Even if our Defense continue its dominate play of holding opposing teams to under 300 total yards, the nation media will just say that “Cam’s a rookie, and the offense had an off day”,

No respect for our Defense. Lets keep it that way but, if people listen to my boy Mike Mayock yesterday he said something i think alot of people didnt hear him say….

Mayock knows Jacksonville and this team. Interesting thought.

by bmacmn on Sep 21, 2011 2:01 AM EDT up reply actions

He had like 12 targets last week against the Jets, who have an undoubtedly nice secondary. He kept getting separation against Cromartie and Revis, McCown just couldn’t get him the ball.

Look for him to be Gabbert’s go-to guy for somewhere between 7-12 catches for 80+ yards.

by SexonvilleShaguars on Sep 21, 2011 2:08 AM EDT up reply actions

with potential to break away for a deep ball if Gabbert is allowed to take shots like Cam Newton has been taking

by SexonvilleShaguars on Sep 21, 2011 2:11 AM EDT up reply actions

I hope so, but not so fast....

You know Koetter, he will ease Gabbert in slowly. Expect Jones-Drew and Karim to have around 45 carries.

But the first play of the game is a roll out playaction, that sucks the defense in hard, Gabbert goes up top to Hill for 6.

Jaguars fans just had a eruption of Joy and Excitment…..

He’s forreal folks.

Oh great!

We have an elite QB in McCown. Now, we will probably trade him for 2 first round picks, but I ask you…is it worth it? It’s like the Drew Brees trade all over again. McCown is going to be a superstar with his next team. Super Bowl baby!

THANK YOU

I tried… I tried so hard not to be a prisoner of the moment. 1 game against an elite defense with one of our top threats ( Lewis) out should not be a fair evaluation of anyone.McCown may yet be a serviceable QB in this league. I just feel like going with him means aiming for mediocrity.I’ve had enough of that over the past decade. Gabbert may or may not live up to the hype, but at least we’re taking a shot.

I was mostly joking, but

McCown has generally been a solid backup. I think that is where “serviceable” QBs deserve to be. There are surely 32 QBs on this earth that are more than serviceable. Everyone else can be a backup. Let’s get elite Gabbo.

10 randon thoughts...in no particular order

1. Shouldn’t this be Gabbert’s third start? Think about it. JDR looks real bad.
2. Play your players, JDR. If it takes 35 carries to win, give MJD 35 carries. Don’t save him for the later in the season. He wants the ball, and the season is now. Later might not matter.
3. Back to playing defense! Awesome.
4. Say what you will about Mathis, but the guy can play. He can play real good, and he did this past Sunday. Don’t think so? Watch the game again.
5. Alualu = badass!
6. 32-3 is completely misleading. You and I both know that.
7. Pats look good, but can they beat the Jets? Make no doubt about it, the Jets are built to beat the Pats. Look at their secondary. However, the Pats seemed to have “countered” with two really good TEs, which are NY’s weakness. The Belichick, Ryan chess match continues……….
8. What happened to MJD catching the ball? He has good hands, and it worked last year! Jack…give MJD the ball often. He is your best player…period!
9. OU had a bye week before they played FSU? Who has a bye week in week two of the season? Seriously!
10. I can’t wait for ‘Bama v. LSU. Talk about a slug-fest! I can’t wait for that game, even though it is a ways off.

bonus – The Texans feel pretty good right now. It won’t last. They are not nearly as good as people seem to think they are.

OU took a bye week in week two? What is that all about?
4.

SHEER GENIUS

Blaine doesn’t do well causing articles to break out questioning all GENE’S draft decisions so we sign FARVE and JACK GETS FIRED . Blaine does well starting an epidemic of why not sooner JACK, JACK GETS FIRED we sign Randy Moss and the Broncos start TEBOW. ANY QUESTIONS

Don't get your feelings hurt if that doesn't happen.

It’s highly unlikely.. First off I believe we will be run heavy.

2cnd…While I believe our recs are not garbage, they are not Jennings , Nelson, and Driver either.

Peyton had a horrible first year also so I am not expecting him to go out and put up numbers like Cam.

Then again what do I know.. Dirk could be thinking that’s what CAMolinas DC is thinking we will do and he comes out blazing! LOL but I doubt it.

I think this is good to start Gabbert.

The Jags right now have a top ten defense and a top ten run game…they just need Gabbert to make a few plays here and there…with Gabbert, the jags can tailor a game plan around him…

Think about it this way, when the Jags played the Jets on 3rd and long inside their 9 yard line, the Jags called a play that allowed Luke to survey the field and “make a play”…result: Safety (after a Jets TD) and Jags were down two possessions…changed the game…

With Blaine in on that play we would have saw a draw or screen play (prolly wouldn’t got the first down, but wouldn’t go the safety either)…

As Blaine grows (week to week), the O will get better…GO JAGS!!!!!!

One life to live, live it to the fullest...
