The Carolina Panthers placed their franchise tag on
runningback DeAngelo Williams center Ryan Kalil before the NFL lockout, leading a lot of people to believe that defensive end Charles Johnson would hit the free agent market. Unfortunately for some teams looking for defensive end help, Johnson stayed in Carolina signing a whopping six-year $72 million contract with the Panthers. It looked like a gaudy deal, but locking up a young pass rusher pays off if they work out.
So far for the Panthers, it seems to be working out. I asked Jaxon from Cat Scratch Reader, our sister franchise's SBN blog about the Johnson contract.
Charles Johnson is playing at a high level and looks to be worth every penny. He's bringing pressure constantly, holding the edge and getting a sack a game so far. His bookend partner Greg Hardy is playing at a high level as well. We really like our Des, just need to coach up the DTs and we'll be good.
Johnson will be someone that both Eugene Monroe and whoever winds up playing right tackle will have to account for.
