I went into the game Sunday against the Panthers excited to watch Blaine Gabbert get his first start, and fully believing that we could beat the Carolina team. Obviously the outcome did not match my expectations in terms of a victory, but something bigger happened to me during that game.
I have waited until this morning to read or post anything, kind of how Vic Ketchman always talked of his 24 hour rule. I have to say I was a bit amazed at the comments that I found. The hatred and damnation of the coaching staff and the disgust with key players, even though conditions were horrendous through most of the game all came as a big shock to me. It made me wonder if I had watched the same game as the rest of my fellow fans.
In contrast, I saw a team that was able to do things that I had never seen them do. I saw a team that now has a weapon that they have never had in the six years I have followed them / became a season ticket holder. They have an NFL QB. They have a guy that can put the ball where it needs to be time after time. Yes, he and Mr. Meester should be about sick of one another by the game against the Saints, but I would much rather have to correct a center to QB exchange problem (because it can be corrected) than try to teach someone how to throw the ball with great accuracy (which I believe you either have it or you don't). I would much rather teach a rookie QB how to see the field better, than be stuck being one dimensional, only able to run. By no means am I saying the Jags should not run, but it’s nice to have the ability to do something else too.
When the game started Sunday, I felt we had to have the win. We had to have it because I gave us little chance to win next week. As the game went on, I felt that we were going to win, and still feel we should have, but the big change came in the fact that I now believe that we can win next week. The receivers are going to have to make some very easy catches that they did not. Blaine cannot put the ball on the ground as much as he did. The o-line cannot allow another safety....ever. We now have a team that can come back if down. A team that can move the ball down the field in a very short amount of time. The Jags have new life. Don't let this loss cloud your vision of that fact!
