Gene Smith's Risky Game (And why we hate him for it)

In 2009, Gene Smith absolutely gutted our roster. In 2010, he continued to cut players that were with the team until it was a young, developing shell of its former self. Gone were Stroud, Henderson, the whole WR corps, you name it. All I could think was, "Gee, we were bad, but were we really THAT bad?" Was our roster in such dire need of a purge that you couldn't even save guys like Dennis Northcut, who had gotten into a decent rhythm with Garrard towards the end of '08?

Well, this was Gene's plan: it's a young man's game, so we're gonna develop young players as soon as we can. It continued past '09 into '10 and we had one of the youngest teams in the league, ultimately finishing 2nd in our division and with a middling record.

The reason it's so hard to trust Gene is because he's made SO MANY changes to the roster in the past couple years and we have yet to see results from all of them. Sometimes I wonder if he should have changed for gradually, but I really do believe that he thinks he'll get the best results by starting over with guys who have more potential, but are very raw. I'm giving it time. So should you. In Gene we Trust.
