People who the Jaguars should take with the 7th overall pick...
There are 3 people that stand out to me in which the Jaguars should take. They're all different positions, and they should all come in and start/contribute immeditately.
With Blackmon probably not going to be available with the Rams, Vikings, and Browns picking ahead of us, there are a couple of great WRs we can take where we're picking. So here we go, the 3 people the Jaguars should consider about getting.
1. Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina ---- seems to be the second best receiver in the draft. Has exellent size at 6''4 and 230 pounds, a comparable size to Brandon Marshall or Larry Fitzgerald. Not incredibly fast, as he runs about a 4.5. But I think he has the best hands of any receiver this year in college football period. I would love this pick, as Gabbert would have an outside weapon that can strech the field and can make amazing catches: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DV0VbLqNLrU
2. Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford ---- the key piece of the OL at Stanford, helping to protect Andrew Luck. He could step up immediately at RT and start if Britton dissapoints.
3. Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama ---- the best Corner in the country, in my opinion, as he is better than or just as good as LSU's Morris Claiborne. Assuming we release Mathis, Kirk would come in and make a pretty exciting secondary: Kirk, Landry, Lowery, Cox. Seems pretty good, barring injury. A big hitter and sure tackler with great zone or man-on-man coverage skills.

As I've stated before, I dont know enough about the players in this draft
But Jeffries could be the pick from all that I’ve heard about him so far.

He is...
If Gene Smith has a brian he would pick him…lol…but some people even question that…lol

I don't want Alshon
for the simple fact that I’ll have to listen to people call him Jeffries instead of Jeffery
See! This is what I mean! Lol
This is why I say i “know very little about this years draft”

Alshon!!!!! All Day!!!!!!!
I dont understand why everyone has us picking up Dre Kirkpatrick….I understand that we will need a corner, with that said i also understand he is really good but our #1 issue is WR if we were to pick up Jeffery in the 1st and maybe stephen Gilmore in the 2nd or even chase minnifield at corner that would address our needs…I know that Rashean is getting old but we can survive another year with out a CB but not a WR…Alshon is a NICE BIG target for Gabbert so i feel there really should be any debate about it lol, but everyone has there opinion
IDK
Jeffery seems like a sexy pick, but I am realy not sure that with Kirkpatrick available, he fits BAP.

if jeffery loses some weight and gets faster
hes a no brainer but if he stays the weight and speed he is at now you cant take him because he cant get seperation.
Cold Blooded
I agree...
but he didnt have alot to do with all the QB situation in South Carolina this year but im pretty sure that if the jags picked him up he’d get a lot faster and he would lose weight cause Gabbert would have him running up and down the field lol

well for gabberts skill set
i think jeffery would be a perfect receiver if he only got a step quicker. gabbert cant hit the broad side of a barn outside of a 20 yard throw and is pretty inaccurate so a big target that can shield defenders would probably work pretty well with gabbert

Really?
Because when he steps into his throws, he is pretty effing accurate
by Sylvester.The.Jaguar.fan on Jan 10, 2012 7:04 PM EST up reply actions
which is only like 4 throws a game
accuracy is consistency and he isnt right now. and his deep throws are terrible right now they sail 5 yards in front of every receiver even if they were occasionally open

and that wasnt even trying to bash gabbert
it was just stating the facts up to this point that jeffery would probably be a better receiever for gabbert right now than say someone like blackmon or kendall wright

when i was at the colts-jags game
i think gabbert overthrew a throw on purpose because the WR had 2-3 people on him so he overthrew it to avoid the pick

I'm on...
the Alshon Jeffery bandwagon. I usually withhold judgement in regards to things until the draft actually takes place, but as TrueJagsFans87 said above, we desperately need a number one receiver. With that kind of size, I don’t see many CB jamming him at the line and we need a wideout who can beat press coverage. Even if it’s not Jeffery, if we can get a receiver who can do that on a consistent basis, the offense would open a lot and that’s what we need the most in my opinion. A legitimate deep threat would be nice but I place a much higher premium on a player like Jeffery.
With that said, I still hope Gene sticks to his board and pick who he deems is the BAP. I’m just hoping that player happens to be Jeffery.
Jeffery got absolute abused by Casey Heyward in the Vandy game because of press coverage.
Alshon’s a case of “Buyer Beware” and I absolutely wouldn’t take him before the early-to-mid 20’s in the first(also, I really don’t think any receiver in this draft is worth a top 10 pick, either, but that’s just me).
Not loving jeffrey
I think kirkpatrick,is a safe pick. Plus there are a ton of wr’ s on the market in fa.

there are no true safe picks, heck not even luck despite his credentials

Kirkpatric has NFL speed and size
I dont think you can wrong with a Kilpatric. He has a cool name for the Jags defense and he has great instincts. Not to mention he is 6’3 with top end speed.

I see your point...
but our line is fine with Britton being heathly despite what everyone says about rackley…but I feel WR is a greater need then o-line and i would hate for us to pick a linemen and not get Jeffery or Floyd cause i believe Blackmon is gone in the first four picks
by TrueJagsFan87 on Jan 10, 2012 9:10 PM EST up reply actions
Rackley is very good player
He only needs work on pass protection but has size and athleticism to be really good. Britton I would prefer as backup T/G
by childintime12 on Jan 10, 2012 11:29 PM EST up reply actions
He definitely has the athleticism
and he has the frame and intelligence. But he could use an NFL season to get stronger and bigger.
I like picking
CB’s and LT’s in the top 10, but I worry any OT available at 7 might not be as good as Monroe, which I don’t like.
Just want Gabbert to have decent pocket protection....
picking either Reiff or Martin would help solve that issue.
BAP!!!!
If Jeffrey is not at 7 then pick who is. Bottomline. We have reach for the to fill holes for too long. Its time to take that BAP.
Take stock in your lives, but leave your livestock alone
I think Jeffery is a better prospect than Blackmon.
Blackmon last year was untouchable. He had size, speed and hands. Since then, he’s slowed down significantly. For a receiver to be worth a top 7 pick IMO, he has to be an exceptional WR.
How do I measure an exceptional WR? I use what I call the “Dez Bryant” test and it’s got two steps: 1) Is he big enough to win jump balls and be a red zone target? 2) Is he fast enough to be a punt returner?
If a guy can do both, he stands a chance of being exceptional. Otherwise, I’d put my pick elsewhere.

Why is Dez Bryant the gold standard?
I would argue he has underperformed considering his hype
