Mel Tucker Will Remain Jaguars Defensive Coordinator, Source Says
The Jacksonville Jaguars hired Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey as their new head coach. I am told by a source close to the team that Mularkey would like to retain Jaguars defensive coordinator Mel Tucker at the same position and he'll likely stay. Both coaches interviewed on the same day. While Mel Tucker has gotten interest from teams such as the Minnesota Vikings for their position, I am told the team plans to keep him on to remain as the defensive coordinator, but he will still interview for other positions.
In 2011, with a freshly stocked defense, Tucker gained defensive play calling after Del Rio was stripped of the duty by Wayne Weaver. The defense ended the season ranked 6th in the NFL, despite suffering injuries to key players that were lost for the season such as cornerbacks Rashean Mathis and Derek Cox. Keeping Tucker on will ensure continuity on the defensive side of the football so the team can focus on the offensive side.

I wonder how much longer before the new offensive coordinator is named? Where’s Pete Carmichael Jr.??

to play puppet OC?
absolutely. He does a lot that you would expect an OC to do, but when it comes to gaemplanning and playcalling, Payton is VERY involved in that.

The only other coach I really hope we keep

well....
it all depends what the plan is. I’m sure we’ll keep him unless the dollars get a bit too ridiculous, similar to when Wilford signed with Miami.

FRIGGIN' AWESOME NEWS!!!
Considering all the defensive injuries we’ve had this year and still remained one of the top defenses , we couldn’t ask for much more…
Ain't this swell news!!
Now get a really good/dynamic offensive coordinator and group of offensive coaches and we are ready to roll!!

Definitely excited to hear that Mel will be staying around!
I’m curious though and don’t take this the wrong way like I do not like Mel tucker because I think he’s done wonders with our defense but I’m curious if all the injuries has anything to do with how hard he may be working the defense. I don’t really know his expected work ethics but the amount of people we sent to IR seemed a bit strange. Can he be over working them to the point where they are susceptible to injury?
My take

Actually ever shot of Gene Smith, he’s wearing similarly drab colors.

just tweeted he has a source saying Tucker still has not decided whether to stay or go

Mel Tucker has his feelings hurt
He wanted a HC now so why should he stay with jags? What else does he have to prove here? If he goes to the Vikings there coach will be fired soon and he will be a Hc again.
I think the Jags are closer to competing then Minnesota
Especially if we get the right pieces via F.A. and Draft. So why wouldn’t Mel stay and be apart of something that could be really great?
by Jags85 on Jan 11, 2012 10:39 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
I think
If I was him I would stay and keep on improving our D and building his resume and he will get a lot of consideration for HC next year

What makes you think their coach will be fired?
by Sylvester.The.Jaguar.fan on Jan 12, 2012 7:53 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
agreed
There seem to always be 5 jobs that open up each year in the NFL. Hell, next year, I see the Chargers, Cards, Bears, Giants, Cowboys, and maybe even Falcons job opening up.
Mell has one more solid year and shows his adaptability, he can write his own ticket.

Mularkey needs to offer him associate HC title along with DC.
Otherwise he heads for Minnesota and probably takes other defensive coaches with him.
No
Mularkey from what he has said thus far seems like he’s going to be a delegator until there is a reason for him to jump in and call plays.
Is Dick LeBeau an associate HC?

If this is true I think it’s great. Like Alfie says above, keeping Tucker means that the defense can remain intact for the most part and keep continuity and Gene and Mularkey can focus on the offense this offseason. I’m pretty happy with the staff so far and I can’t wait for the rest to be announced.
