Jaguars Mike Mularkey Is Tied To Gene Smith
The Jacksonville Jaguars introduced new head coach Mike Mularkey on Wednesday at a press conference. "Gene (Smith) conducted the search for the Jaguars. I can share with you it was thorough, professional, confidential and no drama," Jaguars owner Shahid Khan told the media at the press conference. It didn't take very long for the Jaguars to find their new head coach and it's a coach the franchise is familiar with. Mularkey was in the running for the Jaguars head coaching position back in 2003, when the Jaguars hired recently fired head coach Jack Del Rio. Mularkey's son is also on the Jaguars scouting staff.
"The goal is to win the Super Bowl," Mularkey said when he was asked what his time line was in Jacksonville. "I think that's everybody, that's the ultimate goal. That's the objective here." Over the past eight years, the Jaguars have had issues not only winning, but being a consistent winner. "It's really important that you guys understand I'm here to put a winner on the field. A consistent winner," said the new Jaguars head coach.
Another reason the Jaguars targeted Mike Mularkey is because he has experience developing a "franchise" quarterback. Mularkey was with Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan his rookie season and has helped mold him into one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL. "You have to careful of how much you overload them," Mularkey said about developing young quarterbacks. "Play to their strengths overall. It's got to be very player friendly." Mularkey again reiterated that overloading a young quarterback just hinders them. "At that position it's critical that you don't overload them early on with terminology and too much information."
One of the big things Mularkey will need to do is develop Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert, who struggled in his rookie season as the Jaguars starting quarterback. "Blaine is a competitor. I like that to start. I see some field command from him. I told this to Shad (Khan) and Gene (Smith), first thing I felt the lockout really put him behind the eight-ball," Mularkey said when asked about his thoughts on Gabbert. "When you miss an off season and don't have a chance to be in that meeting room where it's not a rush, rush.. ...that put him behind."
Given the fact that Mularkey's new contract is only for three years, the same for general manager Gene Smith, it's clear their fates will go hand in hand with the development of Gabbert. "It's tied to the hip with Gene (Smith)," Khan told reporters after the press conference. The clear focus going forward for the Jaguars will be putting pieces in place on the leagues worst ranked offense to help Gabbert succeed.

I will name my next child Mularkey if he does this within 3 years.

I didn’t know Khan said this. He has a way of getting to the point. Translation = If they sink…Gene’s going down with them. We all knew it, but most owners don’t say it.
Khan is great!
I was neutral at first, but his honesty is refreshing. He manages to speak the truth without being insulting or harsh. He’s engaging and doesn’t shy away from tough questions. Seems like the media is taking a liking to him also. I really think things are going to change thanks to Khan.

I'd kinda like to see Alfie or someone give their take of Khan's season ticket holder comment yesterday in relation to the article on yahoo.com

That was a bad move for sure
but that Yahoo story is a joke. Halfway through the story, the author starts writing “Kahn” instead of “Khan” and sees that error through to the end. Either way you slice it, we all know what he was trying to do, but he didn’t do it well. I expect quite a few of these gaffes, since his was a company that didn’t come with a public spotlight. He’ll learn.
I got what Khan was saying, or my interpretation
was “piss on the critics! They’re going to criticize and they’ll always have an excuse as to why they won’t buy a ticket as if they think they’re going to hold my team hostage by doing so.” I doubt he was saying I want no more than 76,000 fans.
He’s no dummy, he may be a bit too trusting of the media, but that will change. I think his candor is extremely refreshing, almost Mark Cuban like. I’m sure he’s been researching long enough to see all the folks in the Draft SEC players, Draft Tebow, sign big name flavor of the month, etc. , but he sees us as one of 31 cities who has NFL and we need to appreciate it and cultivate.
He’s going to push the sales and marketing staff like they have not been pushed in 18 years and we the consumer and fan will be the winners. He’s not going to fail.
I was at a Lightning game Tuesday night. Last time I saw them, the place was lifeless. Team sucked, owner sucked and he thought Barry Melrose could draw a crowd. Well, Melrose is great on tv, but he wasn’t really a good coach til he had an older version of the Edmonton Oilers in LA in 1993. Spotting mistakes and bad plays is one thing, getting guys to correct them is another. So, fast forward to now. Lightning have a new owner and the arena was hopping for a Tuesday night game.

So true.
I love the enthusiasm Khan seems to have at each presser. Mularkey commented on feeling the “energy” in the room. I think we are in for a treat with Khan as owner. I’m looking forward to seeing him in person on Tuesday.

Saw it last time I was up in NYC. Hoping to go here before it leaves. Maybe I’ll bring my son, we can find a play area for them. Or your older daughter can watch my son while I listen to Khan.

I see it like this
For all the people who say they are Jaguar fans but won’t buy tickets because we didn’t draft or sign a certain player, you aren’t really fans in his opinion. Fans go to games, they don’t make excuses why they don’t go. Of course, if you can’t afford it, that doesn’t mean you aren’t a fan. I like that he called out the fence sitters and excuse makers.

I didn’t have a problem with his comment. In a way, Weaver was too nice. He tried to please everyone and in turn pleased no one. Worrying about the whiney “I’d buy tickets if _” crowd gets you nowhere, and I think Khan sees that. His commitment should be to the actual customers. The rest will come when they win.
People can say he’s alienating potential customers, but in my opinion it doesn’t matter. If people are offended by it and it causes them to not buy tickets, how big of a fan were they to begin with?

Bingo
But, we’re not the ones that First Coast News interviews. The Indy game was kinda bittersweet for me as well. I made the decision to buy season tix for 2012-14 and I also realized that I will likely not be getting a seat in 113 Row D for $30 in the near future.

I think the main critique
was not against the “whiney crowd” interpretation. It was that he may have alienated low income fans by making them feel as if they needed to be able to afford season tickets to be a true fan. Like I said above…we all know what he was saying, but the wording was off. Unfortunately, in the spotlight, you pay for that.
Come on
Common sense should tell you that the comment wasn’t meant that way. If someone is broke, and has no common sense yet is a Jaguar fan, yeah it’s offensive. I don’t think most low income fans feel the need to buy into a club to be a fan when making ends meet is a struggle.

I didn't know what to think.
I know I’m a die hard fan but I can’t afford to buy season tickets. If I could, I would in a heartbeat even if I didn’t stay in Jacksonville. I wasn’t offended neccessarily but it did stick out like a sore thumb for him to say it like that.
Spin it however makes you feel better. We all know what he meant, but people will twist it to their leisure.
New excuse.

Gene Smith as Lightning Rod
Because Smith’s tenure will cover both the Del Rio and Mullarkey regimes, Smith has become the lightning rod for the Jaguars’ success or failure. It is no longer a coaching issue. Smith may be the hardest working and most analytical GM in the NFL and a fine human-being – but bottom-line, if the Jaguars don’t succeed, Smith will take the hit and the others will be collateral fall-out.

Gene's biggest problem with casual fans is that he will never win the PR game and doesn't seem to give a crap about it
But, what I don’t get is he’s not abrasive and the local hacks light him up as if he ran over their dog.
As we’ve discussed quite a bit, while he has not done much to show he’s “In Gene We Trust” draftwise anyway, he has not really done anything fireable. He’s never going to be a guy who commands the attention of a room at a cocktail party. Again, during the Mularkey presser, I was reminded of JDR’s introductory conference. Hell, I’ve seen political rallies with less pomp! Jack looked the part with his wife out there and it was a New Era, remember that?

Every time I see Gene I think:
How did this guy get a job as an NFL GM? His hair is always uncombed, his clothes look Ill fitting, and he always looks like he’s constipated. He looks out of place in front of cameras. I always think of Albert Brooks character in “The Scout” with Brendan Fraser. Gene looks like the stereotypical scout.
Fidelis Ad Mortem
thing is, when he did the evening with the scouts thing, I thought the dude could not have been more engaging and refreshingly candid about their process
I’m actually kind of surprised that Terry McDonough hasn’t gotten some run for a front office position elsewhere.

He will always be remembered negatively by this statement from Jacksonville's faithful residence
“I’m trying to win a superbowl not a popularity contest.” Said Gene Smith when he was asked by reporters on why he passed on the hometown hero TimTebow. As long as he’s not fielding a winning porduct some talk show host, residences and reporters will have bad blood with them.

Tebow Issue Will Linger
Gene Smith may be a great GM but he committed a PR gaffe regarding the Jaguars’ disinterest in Tim Tebow. He underestimated the groundswell of Tebow support, whether justified or not, and then subscribed to the belief that, because Tebow was not the stereotypical NFL QB, he would be a failure. Smith would probably handle the issue differently today but the issue will haunt him as long as he works for the Jaguars.

Get out of here with the Tebow bullshit. Get over it.

i agree with you because we're better off as a fanbase without him
but it saddens me how they treat him like some kind of cult hero instead of appreciating our own players. I will forever love my team regardless of the player because in my mind no one person is bigger than the damn team.

Gene does not make bombastic statements like that in public
the only bombastic thing I’ve heard him say is “we’re happy with the receivers we have.”

pr gaffe?
Looking at Gene Smith and listening to him at the Evening with the Scouts event last year during the offseason and right after the draft, he doesn’t give a damn about PR. I’m not sure what his grade was on Tebow, but McDaniels thought higher of him than most every other GM did.
Let’s see how things play out. I’m of the belief that Tebow is like a knuckleball pitcher who has mystified the opponents the first time around but they won’t get fooled again. Look at how Kansas City played Denver the first and second time.
I don’t think Gene Smith subscribed to the theory that he’d be a failure, just the theory that his style is not one that you can build a foundation around for 5 plus years. There was so much about the Pittsburgh game that reminded me of the Jags v. Denver playoff game in 1996, it wasn’t even funny. Difference was Brunell had been doing a lot of that stuff most of the season, just not on the big stage. Bear in mind, Tim still went 10 for 21 in the game and did some unheard of things. I mean a receiver catches 4 passes for 50 ypc? Those are AFL numbers. Let’s not let a pretty remarkable win overshadow 3 weeks of garbage and a whole lot of dare I say, divine intervention.

And when the Jags start winning all those local hacks will be looking for Gene's jock to sniff
Face it, most of those people have little more knowledge and much less objectivity than the average BCC contributor. Their only advantage is that their emplover secures access for them to players and coaches.
And anyone who interprets negatively that the guy is more focused on a Super Bowl than a popularity contest is absolutely the “fan” to whom Shad is referring.

Until we get some weapons better than Jarrett Dillard, Mike Thomas, Chastin West, and Osgood
This team ain’t going anywhere regardless of who is headcoach.
Can you at least wait until after the draft and FA to start the bad vibes?

honest question
Aside from Osgood with his special teams skills, can you see any of the above being top two receivers for any ther team. Maybe Mike Thomas as a 3rd option once he is held accountable for giving up on routes. It’s ashame how much he dropped off after the extension.

Dillard/West
Could be a reliable 3rd/slot reciever in a bunch of other systems that aren’t overloaded with WRs
Time to go get some players!

Is Mularkey...
tied to Gene Smith or is Gene Smith tied to Mularkey. I see it as a triangle between Gene, Mike and Blaine, with Gabbert being the key. Should Blaine be successful, that means the team is doing good, therefore Mularkey will benefit from that. If that happens to be the case, Gene’s mistakes will lessen in importance because his most two most important ones, the drafting of Blaine and support of the hiring of Mularkey, will have been the right ones.
