Bob Bratkowski Hired As Jaguars Offensive Coordinator, According To Report
The Jacksonville Jaguars will hire former Atlanta Falcons quarterbacks coach and Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Jacksonville plans to hire former Falcons QB coach Bob Bratkowski as its offensive coordinator, reuniting him with HC Mike Mularkey.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) January 13, 2012
Bratkowski spent the 2011 NFL season as the Atlanta Falcons quarterbacks coach. Prior to that Bratkowski served as the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals for 10 seasons from 2001 to 2010. Bratkowski was credited with the development under former Bengals and current Oakland Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer's development. Bratkowski was also on staff with head coach Mike Mularkey from 1999-2000 with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Schefter also confirmed what I reported on Wednesday, defensive coordinator Mel Tucker will remain on the Jaguars staff as the defensive coordinator
Jaguars defensive coordinator Mel Tucker turned down an offer from the Minnesota Vikings to remain in Jacksonville as the DC.

I wouldn't mind him
as a QB coach. Seemed like Gabbert was improving with Koetter as his QB coach. It would be nice to have a semblance of continuity to give the new coaching staff a head start on what Gabbert’s strengths and weaknesses are and to ease the transition of system changes for Gabbert. Not that I think this is a realistic option.
I want absolutely nothing to do with Koetter anymore!!

You can't deny
Gabbert started looking better, and that was in a matter of weeks and with Koetter spreading himself thin with play calling duties too.
yeah
he looked better than when he had a WR coach as his QB coach. Does not say very much about Koetter. He is better than a WR coach at being QB coach. Yippee?!!

You do know...
that Sheppard has been a QB coach and an OC before, right?
wasn't it at the college level?
I thought he was a coach at Missouri for awhile, just wasn’t positive of his duties
"...I'm not trying to act giddy but the guy is a stud.'' - Terry McDonough, Director of Player Personnel, Jacksonville Jaguars
No.
Here’s a comment that I wrote in another article highlighting coach Sheppards NFL experience.
Speaking solely on his credentials, coach Sheppard entered the NFL in 1993 and his roles are as follows since that time:
1993-95 Cleveland Browns as the TE coach in ’93 and the WR coach in ’94 & ’95
1996 Baltimore Ravens as the WR coach
1997-98 San Diego Chargers as the OC
1999-2000 Seattle Seahawks as the QB coach
2001 Buffalo Bills as the OC
2002-04 New Orleans Saints as the QB coach
2005 New Orleans Saints as the OC
2007-10 Cincinatti Bengals as the WR coach
Then he came to join us as the QB coach and as we’re all aware of, he was switched to the WR coach with the firing of our former WR coach Johnny Cox. So of the 17 years he was in the league before joining us, he spent 7 of them as a WR coach, 5 years as a QB coach, 4 of them as an OC and one as a TE coach. Now how successful he was in those campaigns would require more research than is needed in this response to your comment. Point is though, in many ways he was qualified to be the QB coach and also to become the WR coach when he did.
This being said...
I still want a new QB coach. I just didn’t think it was right for coach Sheppard to be improperly labeled.
Koetter doesn’t sound like the worse idea but I don’t see him taking that kind of demotion just to stay here considering he should be able to get an OC position elsewhere in the NFL or maybe a HC job at the collegiate level. He’s also been estranged by most of the fanbase which is another reason I can see him leaving just to get a fresh start.
I do not know anything about hik being a QB caoch in the past 15 years
last checked he was a WR coach for a vast majority of his coaching career, and so I am not so sure expecting him to do much with a rookie QB was realistic expectations.

although in his NFL QB coaching jobs
he worked with Jon Kitna in Seattle who already had 3-4 years in the league, and then went to New Orleans and got to work with Aaron Brooks, another veteran. I think it is very different to be QB caoch to a guy with NFL experience and a rookie in the Gabbert situation.

True...
yet, isn’t the lessons you’re trying to teach the same?
well
i would say similar, but still different enough that a QB caoch for veterans would not persay be very good at developing a young rookie QB

I like the OC pick
According to Pete Prisco he loves 1 RB, 3 WR sets. Sounds like the offense will be a lot different next year. Im excited
"I love lamp"
this could spell the end of
Greg Jones. :(
true
But Greg is one of the highest paid FBs in the league. Why keep him on the team when he will not be on the field most downs, and we have Montel Owens, who is also a star special teams player.
Bolen
Would play fullback if the team were to cut G. Jones
If hip hop is dead, then it happened the day that Dilla died.
-Akrobatik
maybe
but I think we can agree that a team that uses mostly a single back set with 3 wide and a TE will not carry 3 FBs on the roster.
Well for one
Gene Smith is the GM and not the new coaches. Second, like I said above, ATL used the FB fairly often. Third Greg has been helping more and more on special teams. Also, no other FB on the roster blocks like Greg. And just because he’s highly paid by Fullback standards, doesn’t mean he’s all that expensive. In other words, I think he’s worth next year at least as much as McCown was last year.
u guys will hate bratkowski
His offense is incredibly predictable, he makes NO in-game adjustments ,especially not half time adjustments. As for fullback, his last few years with the bengals- he used tight ends who’d never played FB before and then just stopped utilizing the position all together….not trying to rain on your parade here fellas, but I’m saying this as a long suffering Bengal fan…. Top 2 most hated men in Cincy were Mike Brown, followed closely by Bratkowski. Oh and he never accepts responsibility, has no personality, won’t relate to players or fans on a personal level and has no idea how to exploit an opponents weaknesses…he’s got his gameplan in week 1 and that’s what your getting for the rest of the season

"the bengals are not a west of the 104 longitude team."
I don't doubt Bengals fans did not like him
but I do think that wokring under Mularkey is going to only make him more appealing to Jaguars fans. The way I see it, he might be running a somewhat different scheme than he did in Cincy and might end up benefiting from having Mularkey as opposed to Lewis as the HC he is working under.

he was there for 10 years yes,
But only bc he and his wife were close family friends to Mike Brown…the worst owner in pro sports who is also loyal to his “yes men” to the bitter end. His offensive rankings were wildly inconsistent and if he was held to any standards of consistency or excellence he wouldn’t have ever made it 10 years with us….again not trolling or trying to rain on your parade, I have no problem with jags or their fans…I’m just trying to give you fair warning.

hope bratt is better than he was in cincy. he kept his job as long as he did in cincy because he’s friends with mike brown. marvin wanted bratt gone years before it happened.
there was no love for bratt from the cincy fans for years. he ran a rather uninspired game plan.

Not bad
He should know a good WR when he see’s one in the draft and in free agency. He could be very helpful there. He coached Palmer and Ryan. That’s gonna be good for Blaine.
I need my meds.
Bratkowski has the single most important trait...
… he is not Brian Schottenhiemer, or even worse Marty.
Bob Bratkowski is a perfect fit for the falcons Offense! Especially whith the type of team they have built… He made improved the bengals during his tenure….
In 2009 his offense set a franchise record of eight 100-yard rushing games by individual backs. The previous mark had been six. Cedric Benson, despite playing only 12 full games and part of another, finished with 1251 rushing yards.Besides Ochocinco, six other Bengals offensive players had been selected for multiple Pro Bowls during Bratkowski’s term as coordinator. The list includes T Willie Anderson, RB Corey Dillon, WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh, RB Rudi Johnson, FB Lorenzo Neal and QB Carson Palmer.
In 2007, Palmer became the fifth-fastest player (59 games) in NFL history to reach the 100 mark in TD passes. Palmer knocked Brett Favre and Daunte Culpepper out of the top five in the category, and joined a group that also includes two Hall of Famers (Dan Marino and Johnny Unitas), a surefire future Hall of Famer (Peyton Manning) and a Super Bowl winner with Hall of Fame potential (Kurt Warner).
Over 2004-06, Rudi Johnson’s 4221 rushing yards were the most by any Bengal in a three-season span. Earlier under Bratkowski’s watch, Dillon posted a pair of 1300-yard seasons, and QB Jon Kitna saw his stock as an NFL starter revived.
At Seattle in 1997, he was coordinator for the NFL’s top passing offense (247.4 yards per game). The team ranked third in the NFL in total offense. Seattle also established club season records in ’97 for most yards passing (4187) and completions (359). The Seahawks were second in the NFL in first downs (331).

I was really scared
Which is sad to say, I would like to think I don’t formulate opinions on a guy based off of the opinions of other fans. Anyways, I am glad to see that Bratkowski’s record seems to say differently than some fans opinions from the Bengals.

the years of our offensive explosion
When we had those pro-bowlers was bc we had arguably one of the best o-links in football. Hard to believe, especially since the media loves to sh*t on the bengals, after 05 that line got blown up and has been average at best….the offensive #s were all due to Carson b4 his knee injury, then Elbow injury….hell brat failed to recognize Carson’s limitations after those injuries and kept on game planning like Carson still had pocket presence/ mobility and a laser- rocket arm. The most frustrating thing about Brat is that he does not exploit offensive players strengths, does NOT EVER attack opponents weaknesses, and can not/ does not make in game adjustments to his playcalling or gameplan.
Hope he is a good fit and I will gladly come back and eat crow if it works out, but just don’t get your expectations up too high

WTF does that even mean?!!
Gabbert had a poor rookie showing but he had no one to throw to at the WR position. Give him a very good wide recevier and a half competent offensive coordinator and we shall see jut how bad he is. I will guarantee that if the Jagaurs successfully sign a top tier WR, Gabbert will put comporable numbers to Dalton, all the while running a run first offense with a top tier running back.
Then you go ahead and start bashing a guy who was able to remain for 10 years as the OC of your team and managed to accomplish pretty impressive things with the offensive talent that he was given on that roster.
Not really sure what there is not to love about getting this guy to work alongside Mularkey in developing Gabbert to be the franchise QB the front office envisioned him to be.

Cincy has no runnig game so they will pass more, so by virture of that Dalton will have similar numbers to Gabbert IMO. If they had a running gaame t use, then Gabbert would obviously put up the better numbers.

Greshem our tight end, never seemed to be used right. Bernard Scott, the speed running back, always seemed to go between the center and the guard. And he never seemed to be able to get the young talent to play. For the sake of your team hopefully you get the 05 brat, not the 06 and beyond brat.

do you honestly think the QB coach made Luck the player he is today?11
There is only so much a QB coach can do, and with Luck he basically was at that point by his first year starting. Any improvement was almost guaranteed to not come from the QB coach. Great QBs like that do not really need a spectacular QB coach, and I would venture to say the QB coach at Stanford is not all that great.

they should bring
paul dunn over from atlanta, he’s currently the assistant O-line coach. And this would be a promotion to o-line coach.
Anyone interested in making money easy and quick on the interne, let me know through twitter or facebook(preferably facebook).

They do have some good coaching
on the OL over there. They got a sort of nastiness in their play over there. On that note…The Giants DL dominated them physically especially inside.
I love these new hirings.
I do not know much about Brat but the Cinci offense if I remember correctly has always been decent.

Not in the few years prior to his departure.
Other than our 2009 rushing offense but that was partially from Benson actually having a good year for once in his career as well a good FB.
"It’s time people started realizing just how good a player Carlos Dunlap already is, and that starts with the Bengals. They gave him a season-high 58 snaps and what was the result? Carnage on the right side of the Seattle line." -Pro Football Focus
From a Cincy fan perspective trying to be fair
I believe that Brat will help Gabbert to improve. He will simplify the game plan and slow the game down for him, which should be crucial. Truthfully Brat does work ok with young QB’s. His only downside and what frustrated fans to no extent was that on 3rd downs he always had the QB drop back 7 steps, then throw at the line of scrimmage or behind the line. We had one of the best WR corps for several yrs, and on nearly all of the 3rd down plays were passes 4 yds behind the line of srimmage. We’d have OchoCinco wide open down field and TJ open in the middle, and Brat had Carson throw for a -3 yd play to the fullback. Use to drive me freaking crazy.
Anything will be better than Koetters draw or bubble screen on 3rd and long
Take stock in your lives, but leave your livestock alone
Do you seriously think Carson HAD to throw to the fullback in that situation?

Often he became skittish and threw to checkdown instead of getting hit,
However there was quite a bit of designed screens on 3rd down. We Jeremi Johnson, who was a dang good FB, or he would Have TJ come back to the line of scrimmage for the ball, which was a disaster. But hopefully Gabbert will show promise next yr. Like I said Brat isnt bad, just predictable…
Very excited
Now to get at least 1 reciever that requires double coverage and an off season to build the game plan around Blaine and MoJo and the arrows are pointing up.
If Bengals fans don't like him
He must be a good hire
