Jaguars Might Move To Spread.

With the hiring of Bob Bratkowski, the Jaguars may move to a spread offense.

Star-divide

Adam Schefter Jacksonville plans to hire former Falcons QB coach Bob Bratkowski as its offensive coordinator, reuniting him with HC Mike Mularkey.

Pete Prisco Now that I hear who Mularkey has hired as coordinators, it's a better hire. He can just run the show.

Pete Prisco Bob Bratkowski has a background in one back, three-receiver sets. Jacksonville's love of the fullback might finally go away.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO, this means Greg Jones may be cut or traded. I do think the spread offense is much better suited to Gabbert's strengths, and he played it in college. But without Greg Jones, Maurice Jones-Drew's production will probably go down. But in the spread, the production of Gabbert, the receivers, and Marcedes Lewis will surely go up.

This is a passing league now...

…so it makes sense to move to the spread, but poor Maurice, but Zach Miller’s production(if healthy can go up too), in the spread, he’ll get a lot of snaps from receiver.

lets see:

positives:
- blaine has experience in spread
- his arm strength
- no fumbled snaps, unless blaine cant catch, or the center launches one
- better look of the field, field vision is less important, because it’s much easier

Blaine was a college QB in a mostly spread offense.
Arm strength translates just as well into any other type of passing offense.
Fumbled snaps happen under center and in shotgun. Did it not happen this past year?
Vision of the field is just as important. If he’s not good seeing open receivers, it doesn’t matter if he has one or five.
Since when is a spread offense easier?
Hopefully Blaine will continue to develop a better pocket presence.
I understand a spread offense would open it up, but I don’t think the main man (QB) is ready. I believe he needs to learn one system well before he moves on to another.

Where do you infer the possible implication of the spread offense?!

I do think that while Brat works a lot with 3 WR 1 RB sets, he has to look at this roster and see the enormous strength that this team has at FB. If he is as good an offensive mind as I am hoping, Bratkowski should be able to effectively implement an offense that utilizes the FB properly.

Anything with more than 2-WR is referred to as the spread now, apparently.

most likely it will be....

…3 receiver and single back, is more likely a lot of shotgun, instead of singleback formations.

they will cut brock bolen

not greg jones. idc how much he gets payed. montell is a special teamer not a full back. and when he isnt playing special teams he carried the ball from the running back position. we should have 1 full back.

by crash904 on Jan 12, 2012 10:49 PM EST reply actions

i think montell

is more of a running back than a fullback, but greg jones was a RB turned FB…soo

If we moved to spread...

…we would keep Bolen and Owens, and get rid of Greg Jones, because if we rarely use the fullback, special team aces Bolen and Owens are much more valuable to a good player who is never used. Honestly, if he’s never going to be used, I’d much rather see him succesful on another team, than riding our bench, i we can trade him for a 4th or 5th, and pick up a deep threat receiver, I think win. I love Greg Jones, but it’s a business.

I think I've read

that Greg Jones has really good hands. If this is true, then why not continue to use him. You can occasionally spread him out after getting the defense to commit to a more power personnel grouping.

by pksiv on Jan 13, 2012 1:34 PM EST up reply actions

He does not

have a really good hands. Acceptable hands…yes. But it’s not something you want to feature.

by Ewdtrey on Jan 13, 2012 7:24 PM EST up reply actions

Why does this mean we'd get rid of Jones?

Bratkowski used Jeremi Johnson as a classic FB in Cincinnati. Mularkey did the same with Mughelli.

by unbiased5 on Jan 12, 2012 11:20 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

I would think

that they would choose to keep Bolen instead, just because of age and less wear and tear. it seems like they have been grooming Bolen to take over the past couple of years anyways. Just my opinion, but I don’t think that they new coach is gonna wanna keep three fullbacks on the roster

We could probably get good value from Greg Jones

I always thought Greg Jones was so underrated here in Jacksonville, hopefully if he goes somewhere else he’ll get the recognition he deserves.

New England might need a guy like him. Green-Ellis and Woodhead would definitely see a spike in production behind Greg Jones’ blocking.

No one is trading for a 30-year old fullback with a big salary.

Who trades for a fullback period?

We're not moving to the spread unless we have the personell.

Our roster is weak at receiver, has a QB who struggled immensely last year. A good team plays to it’s roster and our roster isn’t “air it out” friendly right now.

Weak at WR, struggling QB. I’m trying hard to see the correlation.

it doesn't mean we'd get rid of jones

because we’d probably line him up at WR and throw him a screen!

3 WR 1 RB 1 TE

tight end can line up on the line or as a receiver, with the back behind the qb, whos under center…or with the qb in shotgun, and the rb to the left or right. With a lot of 3 receiver sets and 1 rb, im assuming it’ll be a shotgun formation, and 3 wide plus a tight end is “spreading” the field.

They can be creative

Maybe you will see Brock Bolen cut but never Greg Jones. Line Marceds in the slot and put Greg Jones at TE and let him move around the line to become an extra blocker. IDK but keep Greg. He is as good as it gets blocking and I wish they gave him the ball more. He can catch. I think Harry Douglas will be coming over for that vertical/ slot player. Let M80 play number 2 with SHorts in a backup role and sign or draft that #1 WR we need.

by childintime12 on Jan 13, 2012 3:37 PM EST reply actions

How about a combination offense. We keep Jones to keep MJD as the #1 RB. Use Montell as a Punt Returner. Get receivers (who can catch, run routes, and get separation). Keep Shorts, Miller, Dillard, Potter, and Lewis. Draft a tackle that can give Gabbert a couple more seconds. Get a solid Backup QB (Rookie or Veteran). This may help us to make the Playoffs next year, and will probably give Gabbert the best conditions to showoff his talent (Mobility and Arm).

It's All good!
