Joe Cullen To Remain Jaguars Defensive Line Coach, According To Report

The Jacksonville Jaguars were able to hang on to defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, but they'll also be able to keep on an important member of the defensive staff. Defensive line coach Joe Cullen also interviewed with the Minnesota Vikings, but he will remain with the Jaguars in the same position according to a report by Tania Ganguli.

According to some more tweets by Gene Frenette of the Florida Times-Union, a big part of the reason for Cullen to stay was the fact that the Jaguars took a chance on Cullen after his mishap with the Detroit Lions. Cullen has been on the Jaguars staff since the 2010 season and has been working on improving the Jaguars pass rush.

Was Rhett actually serious?

I thought it was a joke! Now I’m a bit disappointed. Where are we going to get our weekly mock drafts now?

This was a nice retention

during some major turnover. I like what he’s been able to do with a bunch of rotational players this year at DE, hopefully he’ll get a new toy in FA or the draft.

If you can't beat 'em, fire everybody and sell the team.

by viralencore on Jan 13, 2012 12:52 AM EST reply actions

I would be trying

to take some of our D coaches too. How they stayed top 6 in defense with all of the injuries is remarkable.

by CheapSeat on Jan 13, 2012 8:05 AM EST up reply actions

I'm sure part of it was

many teams chose not to take any big chances since they knew we couldn’t score.

Not to take anything away from the job they did this year, but there’s a reason why teams like GB, NO, NE etc… have statistically bad defenses. Teams know that they can’t stop those teams so they often take a lot of chances to try and keep up. Or have success late when passing against a prevent defense. GB had a statistically bad defense yet were close to the top in takeaways.

Teams were usually running out the clock on the Jags.

Awesome

I was hoping they’d keep Joe Cullen, The D-Line is one piece away from a consistent pass-rush to be feared.

now all they need to do is keep Earnest Byner as our RB coach.

by Kamarr on Jan 13, 2012 4:09 AM EST via mobile reply actions

I agree but won't make a difference if BG doesn't have anyone to throw to and the O sucks again.

I hate how we wasted a Top 5 Defense this year. After the last 3 years, you told me before the season we would be Top 5 Defense, sweep the Colts, MJD wins the rushing title and we go 2-2 to close out December, I woudl have said we woudl be recieving a 1st Round Bye.

I have a feeling Blaine is going to get the tools to do his job this year

The o-line had some issues.....

but don’t forget that Blaine had a tendency to hold the ball to long on more than one occasion, and they did provide enough blocking to get MJD the rushing tittle. That line is not as bad as you make them out to be!

I shouldn't listen yet

but Bungles fans have me thinking Brat is a problem. They said he is run, run, pass type dude. Do you think that is him or his HC’s game plan? I can’t imagine that going over well with the fanbase (unless it produces a massive amount of victories).

by CheapSeat on Jan 13, 2012 8:15 AM EST reply actions

I found it amazing how Bratkowski became an awful coordinator pretty much right after Carson Palmer shredded his knee.

Did I see that they named Tucker the assistant HC as well as DC?

We shall see....

Don’t get me wrong, I like the moves so far. I think that continuity is a really good thing that’s overlooked a lot of the time. I also believe that the toughest job for a talent evaluator is knowing when to cut ties – obviously we’ve had that issue in the past.

Keeping JDR about 4 seasons too long and letting him dismiss some really good coordinators and assistants.

I hope that is a problem that we won’t have moving forward. I guess that’s why I’m a big fan of both the GM & HC having a 3 year contract: Yr 1 – so me something to believe in. Yr. 2 – Playoffs or really close, Yr. 3 – We better be where I want us or you can hit the road – and if I were a betting man, if you don’t get a 3 yr extension in your second year, then you’re not doing your job.

Either way, I’m pretty excited, and Yes! Mr. Khan, I am a true fan x2. Go Jags.

with a couple of playmakers at WR and a solid DE to complement Mincey/Roth (ahem Avril or Mario Williams) I believe that we're really not that far away

The division is up for grabs next year. Houston has a nice D but I’m just not sold on Schaub or Yates. Who knows what Indy will do, and Tennessee, no idea.

I like the idea of signing Mario Williams

But hasn’t he had injury issues? And he also seems to be one of the players that doesn’t play hard All the time, he picks and chooses his spots. I’m not calling him Haynesworth I’m just pointing out possible concerns

by Jags85 on Jan 13, 2012 10:28 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Julius Peppers and Dwight Freeney

don’t play hard all the time, but teams still have to gameplan for them. That would take pressure off of guys like Mincey and Alualu who do play hard all the time.

by Mahlalie on Jan 13, 2012 12:13 PM EST up reply actions

What about his injury concerns?

Because you know the Jag’s have had such good success with signing DE’s and them not getting injured…

by Jags85 on Jan 13, 2012 1:17 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I also like Robert Mathis

A guy like Mario Williams seems to be one who’d play with a chip on his shoulder.

Mathis

is a good option, especially since Gene seems to like that body type for a pass rusher.

by mab0270 on Jan 13, 2012 3:42 PM EST up reply actions

The only thing I don't like about Mathis

other than his age and cost, is that he’s only played on the left side. And in our system we like our pass rushers on our right side. Switching him at this age might either make him regress or get injured.

by Ewdtrey on Jan 13, 2012 6:01 PM EST up reply actions

Not sold on Shaub?

And why is that. In that system he’s easily gonna get them victories.

by Ewdtrey on Jan 13, 2012 5:59 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah...

he has had two season of throwing over 4,000 yards. Granted he had Andre Johnson but he does deserve some credit for his own success.

Like the staff being assembled

All are very experienced and have been solid. I really like that we were able to keep Tucker & Cullen. Really wanted to keep all the defensive coaches. Duffner at LB and Undlin in secondary. We most definitly need new O-Line/QB/TE coaches and would not mind keeping Byner as RB.

by jagswinbig on Jan 13, 2012 10:26 AM EST reply actions

It would be hard to argue against keeping Duffner. I’m excited to see how all the absurd defensive depth we uncovered shakes out.

by JWWALLS on Jan 13, 2012 10:36 AM EST up reply actions

This Jaguar defense must be real special

getting all the coaches to turn down bigger and better things to stay on and coach this unit.

well

for Cullen would it not have been a DC spot, or was it the same D-Line coach position?!
As for Tucker, I feel like Minn could have presented a better oppurtunity for him as a stepping stone to a HC job, but that is just my opinion

How so?

In regards to Minnesota being a better stepping stone for him to get a HC position. I think it would make more sense for him to stay here and do his best to maintain the defenses Top 10 ranking. If he could do that for another two years, then he’d become one of the hot commodities in the yearly coaching carousel.

by kjones407 on Jan 13, 2012 2:51 PM EST up reply actions

well- in my opinion

I think if he managed to take their medicore defense and make it good that is more impressive than keeping this defense good
