Russ Grimm A Possibility For The Jaguars?

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Mike Mularkey has been adding pieces to his coach staff, bringing back Jaguars defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, linebackers coach Mark Duffner, and defensive line coach Joe Cullen. Mularkey also hired Bob Bratkowski as the team's offensive coordinator, a man he'd worked with in the past with the Pittsburgh Steelers. It's possible Mularkey could make another connection to his Steeler days when the Jaguars go on the hunt for a new offensive line coach.

Arizona Cardinals offensive line coach Russ Grimm's contract is expiring, and NFL Network's Jason La Canfora speculates that it's possible he could reunite with Jaguars Mularkey as the team's offensive line coach.

Grimm was a long-standing member of the Pittsburgh Steelers' staff and has been a top assistant for Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt.

Grimm is close with new Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Mike Mularkey. With Mularkey putting together a new offensive staff, it's worth noting the connection.

Grimm is a Hall Of Fame offensive lineman, a member of the famous Washington Redskins "Hogs" offensive line in the 1980's, and regarded as one of the best offensive line coaches in the NFL.

Though I would assume that maybe Byner comes back to coach the RBs

I would keep Byner

Him and MJD are close and you wouldnt want to get rid of that. Although Byner put Karim in the game in stupid situations. Mularkey should help Lewis big time. And ST cordinator is important with new kickoff room. That unit looked terrible early in the year in kick coverage. Like they wernt set up correctly to block for karim either.

I really like Byner as a person and coach

He is also really good in tecmo super bowl for sega genesis but Del Rio said Byner handles the backs and when they go in the game. And Deji was in during some stupid times last season.

by childintime12 on Jan 14, 2012 5:54 PM EST up reply actions

/I agree there were some times Deji should not have beeen in but...

who else could he have put in? Montell? There’s a reason he didn’t get PT even when Deji was playing bad and was then surpassed by D’Juan on the on the depth chart.

Nothing against Byner. I have heard good things,

but I think with a new Coach and staff you bring in your guys. Kenndey Pola was close to MJD and he did fine when Byner was brought in to replace Pola.

byner has coached 2 NFL rushing title holders in MJD and CJ

in 2 of the last 3 seasons. I’d like Byner back thank you.

Gene and Co

Look like they are assembling some of the final pieces to the puzzle. We’re going to have a very good coaching staff.

Now we just need talent on offense to work with.

It would help things immediately

Not only would it improve the development of talent but good position coaches help attract players.

Malarkey said he had a possible QB coach they were reaching out to...

… who had been a OC? Not sure who that would be but its not Shula. Any Ideas?

when has either one ever been a coach?

They havnt

Mike Mularkey coached them in PITT when they would do WR reverse passes and Kordell would play WR. So Mularkey has some creativeness in him.

by childintime12 on Jan 14, 2012 5:55 PM EST up reply actions

Bc I dont think his contract has expired

he’s not allowed to make a lateral move, the jags would have to “promote” him some how in order to bring him over from Carolina (i.e. when Murlarkey brought his former QB’s coach over from ATL and promoted him to O.C.)

That's what worries me

As far as coaching an OL how to run block, I think Russ is really good. As far pass blocking goes….he’s unproven IMO. With the Steelers, when he was there, didn’t pass the ball very often. And with the Cards…bascially, their OL was worse than ours as a pass blocking line.

by Ewdtrey on Jan 14, 2012 3:39 PM EST up reply actions

That's my deal

I wonder if there is someone who can teach our run blocking guys how to do both well…

I hope Meester

Lasts as long as Mawai and Kreutz did. If he plays at a high level going forward. I like Meester a lot.

No Levi Brown was a bust

They have to play him because he went 5th overall but hes the worst OT in the NFC.

No, Guy Whimper

Is the worst OT in the league

I would be so happy to get this guy on the Jags staff

I was thinking he was an OC possibility prior to the Bratkowski hiring

The obvious is that this move invests in Gabbert as well as our still young tackles. However, this also helps us get some more mileage out MJD before the wheels come off. If we can grab a quality backup RB in free agency or the draft, we can extend the shelf life of MJD for quite some time. The guy simply can’t carry the ball like this forever and still walk.

You do know there is a quality

Possibly starter on other teams in rashad jennings coming back this year right?

I’m aware of Jennings and the fact that he hasn’t proven himself yet.

by Catfanatic1979v1 on Jan 15, 2012 11:36 AM EST reply actions

so draft a rookie who has not proven himsefl either

Jennings showed in 2010 that he is a very solid backup RB option.
84 carries for 459 yards(5.5 YPC) and 4 TDs.
26 catches for 223 yards(8.6 YPC)

Not terrible production from a backup to MJD
