Keenan McCardell To Interview For Jaguars Coaching Position, Source Says
The Jacksonville Jaguars are attempting to fill out their offensive coaching staff after filling in some pieces on the defensive side of the staff. Bob Bratkowski was hired as the team's offensive coordinator, but they still need some other positions. A source close to the team tells me that the Jaguars will interview former Jaguars wide receiver and Washington Redskins wide receivers coach Keenan McCardell on Monday.
McCardell got his first shot at coaching wide receivers in the 2010 East West Shrine Game, McCardell was hired by the Washington Redskins as their wide receivers coach. McCardell spent two seasons as the Redskins wide receivers coach before being released at the end of the 2011 NFL season. As a player, McCardell spent six seasons with the Jaguars forming one of the premier wide receiver tandems in the NFL, pairing with Jimmy Smith to be "Thunder and Lightning". McCardell was know for his route running and the ability find soft spots in zone coverage.

Great Receiver but...
What has he done as a coach. Why is everyone so excited by him other than the fact he was a former Jaguar..
He is a WR coach in Washington...tell me the last time they had a mediocre WR or QB
Last year when they had McNabb they had a 1,000 yard WR and to WR over 800 yards

He played WR for the Jags
We know he knows how to play.. Im sure he can coach. Its better than having some guy who never played WR being the coach.

I dont know if being a player - especially a good player means anything.
Larry Bird was a terrible, terrible coach. My personal opinion is: the better the player, the worse the coach. Mostly because when you are that gifted, its hard to teach others who dont have your natural gifts.
Of course, there are exceptions. Ditka was a great player.
Fidelis Ad Mortem
But was he truly a gifted receiver
or did he work at perfecting his craft enough that he had a very good career ?
I mean, he did nothing with the Redskins his rookie year, didn’t do much in Cleveland for 4 more seasons, it wasn’t until he landed in Jacksonville as a veteran that he put up good numbers.
Hmmm...that is a great point.
I hadn’t thought of that. I honestly don’t know anything about McCardell, as I became a Jags fan in 04. Your point is well taken.
Fidelis Ad Mortem
Not a very good response
You mean your going to give him credit for helping Veteran WRs for doing what they have already done for years?
Again why are people so excited, he hasn’t done much and he was just fired.
I believe
we should bring in as many former players as well as players that are from the Jacksonville area as possible. I think we should also look for players that played at Florida, Georgia, and Florida State. Obviously the number 1 factor would be performance. I think that by doing this it would create an atmosphere of the players “belonging” to the Jags. This will help people on the fence to “go all in” with the Jags. I don’t live in Jax but travel to several games a year. I’m dumbfounded by the people I meet in Jax that could care less about the team.
only if all else is even
Building a winner is first priority. Then, the rest will fall into place.

What????
Are you serious?!?!?! Didn’t the Jaguars start the drafting the and only three of the had some type of success.
Not bad though.
Fred Taylor – Beast.
Greg Jones – Beast.
Jeremy Mincey – Beast
Mike Peterson – Beast
Mike Mularkey – Beastmaster
Sure, he was great as a WR for this team
I am just a little skeptical about his ability as a coach. He might be good, but based on an E-W Shrine game and all of like two seasons with a WR group not seen as being one of the better groups in the league, and even more so being released from his role as WR coach, and this has me seriously doubting him as a hire for the WR coach spot. I would prefer to see a more veteran coach come in and coach up the unit that presents the greatest weakness on this team.

I a not saying I know that answer
I am saying that I am not sure McCardell is a good option to be the WR coach.
The thing is that there is really nothing to make me think McCardell would be a very good option for the WR position, and so I am not a fan of hiring him despite what he may or may not havee done as a WR in Jacksonville.
You know what, let’s just go get Jimmy Smith. After all, he was the #1 guy while McCardell was the #2 guy, He must be a better WR coach!! Two years of experience as WR coach of a mediore unit, and getting relieved of your duties is less inspiring IMO than having no experience whatsoever

well, they were 14th in NFL is passing game, but that's probably a fluke
Gaffney nearly had 1,000 yds receiving

I look at the numbers
Their TE and RB were pretty large contributors to that passing offense. Sure Gaffney has ~950 yards, but after that the next best WR was Santana Moss with 584 yards. To be very honest, Moss should be putting up better numbers. Am I saying McCardell is totally at fault for that? Nope, but I do think that McCardell is not totally deserving of credit for Gaffney(10th year in the league) and Moss(11th season) having decent seasons

could be
It still does not change the fact that I am not so sure McCardell is the reason for the solid statistical numbers. Gaff and Moss are seasoned veterans who have put up good numbers year in and year out. I would look more to see what he did with the young guys like Leonard Hankerson, Niles Paul, etc.

he is a better fit than Cox
but there are a lot of better options than Cox. I feel like there is someone better to be found for the position.

great. Name someone.
Of course there are probably better options. But throw some names. I assume the Jaguars are doing their trademark due diligence to try to find the best guy for the position. One thing though. It will be AMAZING how good any coach is when they have legitimate Pro Bowl quality talent.
Look at RB. Is it Byner? Was it Pola? Or could it be the players they coach.

valid point
but the new WR coach will not have pro bowl talent just yet. I think you need to look for a guy who has shown the ability to successfully work with young inexperienced guys and help develop them nicely.
I definitely think that when MJD was a rookie, it would have mattered who his RB coach was.

fine
so what top veterans will be helping the wide receviers brought in?!

It appears...
as if McCardell will be the veteran that’s brought in, just in a coaching capacity, saving a roster spot. The opposite of the role Kampman has been filling since he’s been injured.
that would be great as a coaching assistant, not as THE WR coach

Back...
to what Alfie’s point. Before you can say that he shouldn’t be THE WR coach and that he should only be an assistant, there has to be a better option. Since none of us don’t have any options, there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be the guy for the job.
I am not all that knowledgable of the coaches out there
but I think that there is probably a significantly better option out there. Maybe a guy who has been an offensive assistant on a team with some of the better young wide receivers in the league?
Once again, I am not saying I know of a better option, but why should I at this point be willing to settle for a guy who I do not perceive as being all that good of an option?!!

And yet you know he isn’t a good WR coach

"...I'm not trying to act giddy but the guy is a stud.'' - Terry McDonough, Director of Player Personnel, Jacksonville Jaguars
you are taking two different thing
I am not knowledgeable of who is available, but I can formulate an opinion about the one guy we are discussing. simple reading comprehension and you would have figured that one out.

Personal attack warning: you're stupid.
why should I at this point be willing to settle for a guy who I do not perceive as being all that good of an option?!!
Because you are a fan, and don’t own the team, or cut the checks that pay for the coaches.
You can formulate any opinion you want about any coach, but it doesn’t mean you’re right, or have any sort of, you know, “evidence” to support your claim he will be bad, but you are right that doesn’t stop you from forming a decision about a person who you probably didn’t know was coaching in the NFL until this article came out.
And simple reading comprehension would dictate you capitalize words and the beginning of sentences.
"...I'm not trying to act giddy but the guy is a stud.'' - Terry McDonough, Director of Player Personnel, Jacksonville Jaguars
I can turn this back at you.
So I can make opinions, particularly ones substantiated by evidence(I thought about it, looked at the production of Redskins WRs under McCardell’s tutelage, and logically concluded that he was likely not doing all that great of a job) but to voice them is unacceptable because I am only a fan?!! So I should blindly follow and approve the moves this franchise makes and not be critical of them when I think they did something bad?!! I never realized being a fan of a sports team was similar to life under Stalin.why should I at this point be willing to settle for a guy who I do not perceive as being all that good of an option?!!Because you are a fan, and don’t own the team, or cut the checks that pay for the coaches.
but you are right that doesn’t stop you from forming a decision about a person who you probably didn’t know was coaching in the NFL until this article came out.
Nice assumption, except it is 100% incorrect.
And simple reading comprehension would dictate you capitalize words and the beginning of sentences
This is also 100% incorrect. The rules of grammar indicate that you capitalize at the beginning of sentences. Reading comprehension deals more with the ability to read something and understand what the writer is trying to say.

I didn't say you couldn't form opinions or voice them,
You can formulate any opinion you want about any coach
goes counter to that. Use your advanced reading comprehension and show me where I said you can’t voice your opinion, only that to bitch about something you have no control over, does noone any good.
See rhett’s post below showing production before and after the hiring of McCardell, where production improved under a declining McNabb, production stayed close to the same under Rex Grossman, and their leading reciever the year prior was injured for 4 games. But evidence shows he is garbage, right?
I am very interested to know how much you followed McCardell’s relatively short career prior to the Jags search, but I suppose I’ll take your word for it.
Sorry, I associate the ability to read and write to include proper grammar usage, you are correct that I didn’t correctly separate the two. My apologies. This is my final response because I don’t want to bore other people with it anymore.

Aye what you think bout Ocho Cinco coming here next year with him and Bartowski working with him in Cincinnati….its almost for certain the Partriots wont keep Ocho another season….I can see us bringing atleas 3 new WRs.
after the season he’s had in New England I’ma guarantee he’d come running to Jacksonville next season….
he's done
he’s not even a sideshow anymore.

I’ll take him over T.O or Mike Thomas plus he just didn’t fit that SYSTEM in New England…Bartkowski will hopefully(certainly) bring him in for cheap plus we could use his sideshow…
You cant put a Band Aid on on something broken. If Tiquan Underwood can get a higher snap count in New England’s offense it doesn’t speak volumes for Ochocinco.
Tiquan Underwood is a young hungry WR wiling to do whatever to fit in….Ocho jus seems so out of place…you don’t think he has no more fuel in his tank, he just turned 34……..LOL he should be well rested from this season.
34? look @ all da young guys we used at WR this season….Chad probably still faster than Mike Thomas…LMAO……M80 got ran down from behind this year….LOL…..
we're looking to get better. Ocho is well past his prime

I have come across a guy who is unemployed and has 15 years of WR coach experience between NFL and college
and that would be Ray Sherman. Quite the impressive resume overall. He is probably a much better option than McCardell

Lets see
2009: McCardell wasn’t the coach
Santana Moss 70 902 12.9 59 3
Antwaan Randle El 50 530 10.6 44 0
2010: McCardell joins the team
Santana Moss 93 1115 12.0 56 6
Anthony Armstrong 44 871 19.8 76 3
2011: McCardell is still on the team.
Jabar Gaffney 68 947 13.9 45 5
Santana Moss 46 584 12.7 49 4
It looks like 2009 they had a decent QB in Campbell, and in 2010 under a crappy McNabb the production went up. But this past year under an even worse Grossman, production went down again.

After what we witness at WR this season, they can bring in Ocho, T.O, call Jerry Rice out of retirement, have Keenan McCardell put down his whistle and suit up. Just get some players who can separate and catch the damn ball.

All this talk...
of McCardell is making my name seem almost cool.
But seriously though. I don’t think he could any worse than what we’ve had before. With him having at least a little coaching experience and being a player before, I think he’d come in and be a wonderful asset for our younger group of wideouts.
Ever wonder where the Jags might be if former assistants where still here but in higher positions. Todd Monken, Mike Shula, Mike Smith, Kennedy Pola. Like all the other staff this year on the offensive side you have to give them a chance and if they turn out well find a way to keep them like Tucker.
