How damaged is Del Rio's reputation?

I noticed Mike Smith hired Dirk Koetter as the OC for the Falcons. Mike Smith also has an openning for Defensive Coordinator. It made me wonder, where is Jack Del Rio's name in this search? I am assuming Jack wants to continue his career in NFL coaching. Maybe he doesn't. Maybe he wants to enjoy his family and his $5 mil coming in 2012.

Let's assume he does want to continue. So why isn't Mike Smith calling? Head coaches are very serious about their assistants. They know the quality of the staff controls their future. They typically hire people they are comfortable with and trust to do the job. So where does Jack stand with Mike?

I wonder what Gregg Williams would say about Jack if asked. How about Joe DeCamillis? How about Wayne Weaver? I could go on and on but the point is made. Is it possible Jack doesn't have a lot of support around the NFL? I don't know.

I don't see Jack as a college coach. I can't see him sitting in kitchens across America convincing high school students to come to his program. I might be wrong.

For me, it will be interesting to see where and when Jack lands. I'm just curious.

Personally

I think he wants to go to work in the collegiate game. I think he might realize he is better suited to be a coach at the collegiate level.

When has he ever been a college coach?

and as far as his reputation is concerned, he did interview for the KC job so I assume that is just fine.

by pksiv on Jan 16, 2012 6:49 PM EST reply actions

Very Suprised

The Vikings did not give him a call. He was a former player and they interviewed 2 of our Coaches. Maybe he does have a rep nobody wants around??

Oddly enough, I really haven’t heard or read much from JDR since he was canned. I think he is smart enough to not open any cans of worms in regards to his tenure here. (if there are any, of course). Taking a year off and still make a few million dollars ain’t a bad gig. I just pray he doesn’t make it to any broadcast booth. Meh.

I imagine a coaching interview is like any other interview in the private sector

You’re seldom going to trash your former boss because eventually, the place that hires you will fire you as well. I imagine he’d be a hot commodity in 2013 as a DC.

Call me crazy, but I could see him coaching college. Remember, he flirted with LSU a few years ago.

Do we know that

he was ever interested in that job ? Maybe they were just rumors or maybe LSU was just asking around ?

by pksiv on Jan 17, 2012 9:50 AM EST up reply actions

I recall Weaver being pissed that he spoke with LSU while under contract.

Now, in a dabbling of semantics, it could be a matter of JDR’s agent speaking with LSU and it got back to Weaver, but there apparently was interest

His rep must be somewhat tarnished.

Del Rio hasn’t even been mentioned for any positions, anywhere. At least, none I’ve heard yet. So when you think about why that is well, let’s see: the sudden personnel changes at key positions, clock management issues, and apparent swings in his coaching style. That’s what’s coming off the top of my head. Anyone care to add?

NOLA's DC position just opened up.

He’s actually quite highly thought of in the Big Easy and by Tom Benson. Not sure if you recall, but I thought he’d get consideration for the Tulane job.

I hope his reputation is fine.

I wanted him gona after 9 years, but not because he was a bad guy. I could absolutely picture him in college; I always thought he gave off a great “rah-rah” vibe, and was a great speaker. That jazz seves one well in college ranks.
Whatever is past is past. I wish JDR and his family the best in the future. Maybe his son at Episcopal will one day be drafted to QB the Jaguars.

I think about Tom Coughlin

and how he was fired by the lowly Jaguars and got one of the prize coaching jobs in the NFL, but he waited a year. I think about Cam Cameron going 1-15 at Miami and go hired immediately as an OC for a top team.

I just thought it strange that Mike Smith didn’t call. Or as Jagswinbig wrote, the Vikings should have called. I guess wewill see.

TC also sat out a year

Remember the story of him at the Senior Bowl right after Weaver fired him and taking tape home and watching.

How do you know Mike Smith

didn’t call ?

Maybe Del Rio is content to sit out a year unless a HC job presented itself ?

I did preface the article with that exact point, and then ignored it. You can call me out on it if you want and be right to do so.

Didn't mean to call you out or anything

but I can guarantee there’s a lot more communication going on that we never hear about.

And I’m equally as sure that some that we do here about isn’t actually going on… Maybe some team/school calls someone’s agent, the agent says “Hey, these guys called, you interested”, Coach “No, not really”. But if the Media hears about it they have to make it a big story to get people excited to watch their crappy program or read their blog so they’ll of course lead with “So and so coach interested in xyz job”.

that Del Rio is looked at as a great evil, I think his rep will be fine.

As is every coach...

on every team site they were fired from…..I imagine you are right!

by GAJAGFAN on Jan 17, 2012 8:11 AM EST up reply actions

I agree that sitting out a year could be good move.....

but I remind everyone of the Singletary example. I know Mike has been coaching linebackers in Minnesota, and even seems to be a candidate for the DC position there, but I do not ever see him getting a chance at head coach again. Jim Harbaugh has basically taken the same team Mike had, and is positioned to make a run at the Super Bowl. Jim, a QB, even vastly improved a defense that an NFL legend like Singletary could not make work.
If the same thing happens here in Jacksonville, Del Rio’s rep will take a shot, much like Mike’s did. Yes we will have a a QB with one more year under his belt, and hopefully a real receiver or two, but if Mularkey can make it happen, Jack’s multiple years of mediocrity may haunt him!

by GAJAGFAN on Jan 17, 2012 8:28 AM EST reply actions

I see a difference between Singletary and JDR

Singletary is a bit more stubborn. JDR, to me, seems like a guy who will learn from his mistakes and take steps to improve. Plus, you cannot take away the fact that he looks the part and I imagine is a hell of an interviewee. He’s a great face for most any organization.

Jack Del WHO?

by MadKow on Jan 17, 2012 9:15 AM EST reply actions

He will never take a job this year.

He is due 5 Million from the Jags. If he takes another job his salary come off the top of his buy out. So he would be working for free. Remember dumb as Ditka loosing his massive saints payout? He is just keeping his name floating while he collects big Cash. He can coach again when he has every last penny, everyone hiring a staff knows this. His problem is if he doesn’t coach somewhere and the team takes a big step after he leaves he will be wearing that all over his perfectly pressed shirt. He will be left crying and spooning with his twenty-five million Wayne Bucks. Poor bastard.

He won't lose the money

He would be cheap to a new team. If they paid him $2 million, the Jaguars would pay him $3 million so he wouldn’t lose any ground. This is the same situation Gregg Williams was in when he came to us. It was a one year situation at low cost to the Jaguars.

Jack is actually in his most marketable position right now.
