Ron Zook Interviews For Jaguars Special Teams Coach Position, Source Says
As the Jacksonville Jaguars conduct interviews for various coaching positions, quite a few of the coaches have a connection to new head coach Mike Mularkey. That's no different with former Illinois head coach Ron Zook, who will interview with the Jaguars today for the special teams coach position. Zook most recently was the head coach of the Illinois Fighting Illini after serving as the Florida Gators head coach from 2002 to 2004.
Zook has experience in the NFL as a coach however, as he was the Pittsburgh Steelers special teams coordinator from 1996 to 1998. Zook was on the same coaching staff as Mularkey for those seasons when Mularkey was the Steelers tight ends coach, so the two should be familiar with each other. Zook also has NFL experience as a defensive backs coach for the Kansas City Chiefs and experience as a defensive coordinator with the New Orleans Saints before jumping back to college football.

no, he was demoted to ST from DC
But at the same time given assist HC title. He left UF the first time on his own to coach in the NFL
Take stock in your lives, but leave your livestock alone
I do not know enough about this guy to have a real solid opinion
but from what I see, I would prefer to see a guy with more ST coach experience get the job

Good Possible Hire
I like the possible hire. Think the new coaching staff is going to be a good one.
Rough career path
Back to square one as a special teams coach after 13 years

Hasn't he always be known as
a pretty good scouter/ recruiter so this could be possibly really good with helping us in the draft room. or atleast I would think that he would have a pretty good feel for most of the players in the Big 10.

No thanks
I’d prefer coaches focus on coaching and let the scouts scout.
I do, however, like the recruiting part when it comes to FA.
in the offseason
coaches become scouts. They may not have as big of a voice, but they still watch film and give analysis on players.

Could be something could be nothing
Where did Shad Khan graduate college? What program is he a huge donor for? Zook is qualified, but this could be a gesture to Khan as well. Not as if he left Illinois on bad terms, the guy just could not produce.
But…..
Dude can recruit like a mother. He could be a very valuable asset for free agency.

I did not know mothers were highly regarded as recruiters

College recruiting does not equal free agency recruiting
In college there are tons of factors
In the pros the main factor is how much money are you going to pay a man
maybe we'll let Dwayne Bowe pick his jersey # or show Stevie Johnson his name on the Jumbotron
I just envision a bunch of slime ass “Bull Jaguars” in teal sportcoats giving Pot Roast a $50 handshake. That being said, money is a key factor, so are lack of state income tax, locale, even playing on a grass field.

I'm not really sure
how many prized free agents are going to come to Jacksonville because our special teams coach wants them lol

you need a schmoozer to deal with the player and agent
Or do they just go into Gene Smith’s office and he says “Play for us. This is how much I’m offering. Care for a cappucino? Pancake and a smoke? Blintz and a bong?”

is that what was wrong with the previous coaching staff? They had Del Rio doing all the schmoozing and too many people mistook him for Al Gore

Zooker!
One of the best recruiters in the biz. Just never was a good head coach. I would like the hire.
SCALP'EM

That man can recruit!
Idk how he would be as a ST coach but I know he can recruit.

I like the idea of hiring him but i would like to know who the other candidates are. Even if he was never a head coach at the NFL level, he can still relate his situation to Mularkey’s in certain ways. It never hurts to have a former HC at any level on your staff.
Does anyone know where I can find Zook’s stats from his stint as special teams coach in Pittsburgh?

I imagine profootballreference.com can give you such things as special teams rankings

i quickly found these
http://footballoutsiders.com/stats/teamst1996 (has them at 21st best ST in the league in 1996)
http://footballoutsiders.com/stats/teamst1997 (has them at 15th in the league in 1997)
http://footballoutsiders.com/stats/teamst1998 (has them 16th in the league in 1998)
Not going to say I fully understand the different statistics shown on the pages but it looks like a very reputable set of statistics utilized and should be trusted

And like someone said before, if he is a good evaluator of talent at the pro level then that is a big bonus. I just wonder how true that is and who he fought to bring in while in the NFL.

Zook would be a great hire for our team i believe he is great with young players and the guy can flat out bring in talent! So why not give him a shot? who did we have before as ST coach? not very good ones lol. Lets bring him in and let Kennan coach the wide outs

Not a fan of Zooker as a head coach anywhere
He always seemed to be a great cheerleader/motivator with little substance, but maybe that’s a special teams coordinator’s primary trait?
Jags ticket holder since 1995.
After thinking about it, I really hope we hire someone who has had alot more experience and success with special teams. I’m not saying he is a bad hire, I’m just saying I hope there are better options.
