Jaguars NFL Draft Interest: Four prospects talked to by the Jaguars, according to reports

Eric Galko at Optimum Scouting has been reporting from the 2012 East/West Shrine Game and providing notes along the way. Among his notes are reports of which players were talked to by different team scouts.

In his Monday notes from the Shrine Game, he noted that the Jaguars talked to Fresno State WR Devon Wylie. On Tuesday, Galko noted that the Jaguars spoke with UMass FB Emil Igwenagu, Coastal Carolina CB Josh Norman and Southern Methodist G Josh LeRibeus.

These are the first of what will surely be a long list of players the Jaguars talk to in the coming months, but any interest is certainly notable. In 2010 the Jaguars were impressed by Tyson Alualu in the Senior Bowl, so much so that they spoke to him there and avoided having contact with him for the next three months to avoid making their interest in him obvious.

FB Emil Igwenagu Massachusetts 6-1 245 6th-7th
CB Josh Norman Coastal Carolina 6-0 203 4th

Also have to keep in mind, a lot of these guys are being looked at as returners.

Are we really gonna waste a roster spot on a KR/PR?

I hope not. Let’s get a WR who can return punts. Hello, DeSean Jackson.

Great so if the Jags show interest in a guy

By bringing him in for workout, visits, etc. Then we should probably rule him out as a prospect.

we end up having to release them in a couple years.

Reggie Nelson, Matt Jones, Reggie Heyward, Derrick Harvey to name a few.

The SEC has also produced a few other gems:

My post was sarcasm

Somehow I managed to lose the remainder of my comment, .

I’m comfortable with the idea that you find players wherever you find players – SEC, ACC, Continental, Mid-American – wherever. I’d be happy for another Fred Taylor from the SEC, Jerry Rice and Deacon Jones from the SWAC, or Lawrence Taylor from the ACC.

Geln Dorsey

has turned out to be a good and underrated player.

I read good things about Norman

He is a small school guy as well. I think the Jags could get him 4th round but in the 3rd they may jump on him like they did derek cox. The guy has talent and may well be worth the pick.

His brother plays for the Jacksonville Giants

Josh Norman’s brother Renaldo Norman, plasy right here in Jacksonville for the Jacksonville Giants ABA basketball team. If Josh is any kind of athlete like his brother, then we want him here in Jacksonville. Trust me, they are a athletically gifted family.

if Renaldo

was that gifted, he would be playing the in NBA instead of the ABA

If athleticism has all that mattered

Vince Carter would be the greatest player ever, This guy is like 35 and still has a ridiculous play or two a week.

No, quite a few guys from bigger schools like Miami, UGA, and Notre Dame

Owens is technically a rb, now.

Could be that theyd like to find a guy who can block like jones and catch/run/spt like bolen so they dont need 2. I could understand that, though it would be hard to deal with the loss until we have an extra offensive roster spot.

You should write kassim osgood and tell him your idea about him switching to TE, then convince him to take less money. Bet he could take some snaps at fb while a rookie gets acclimated. Then he may no longer be a one trick pony. Be a great way to revitalize his career.

by Mr.Awesome on Jan 18, 2012 6:01 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, why even acknowledge he exists

Our big board should not include positions we don’t need. It should just have every WR in the draft. Then next year’s big board should only include players from positions of need we have for that offseason.

Okay, sarcasm aside, all NFL GMs think A LOT differently from fans. A common example of that is a lot of picks from rounds 5-7 have absolutely nothing to do with positional need but are solely special teams picks.

As far as this game goes, most of these participants will be UDFA’s. There’s nothing wrong with signing a guy to see if maybe he has the ST ability to get a roster spot.

2/3

of our FBs are great on special teams, the other 1/3 is a great offensive player.

As a Fresno State fan

Wylie is like a white Jacoby Ford. Good slot receiver and PR. Supposedly he’s stealing the show at the Shrine game practices. According to Eric:

Monday:

Of all the receivers (and the entire squad), Fresno State’s Devon Wylie was the star of the afternoon, and I’ll admit, I vastly under rated him in our rankings (will change). He’s got a powerful, developed lower half, he’s explosive with the ball in his hands, but maybe most impressive that I didn’t always see on film was how well he tracked the ball and saw it to his hands. Granted the secondary was not good for the West roster, but Wylie had loads of NFL scouts after him today.

Tuesday:

Speaking of Fresno State’s Devon Wylie, he once again looked like the best receiver here. He, Shoemaker, and Jarius Wright of Arkansas seem to be the most polished and having the best chance to be NFL starting receivers (assuming the slot is a starting position) of this group. Wylie once again had scouts all over him after practice, and he could be a big mover leading up to the draft.

Doubt he goes any earlier than 3rd, but other teams are looking at him too.

Caps lock is not cruise control for cool.

I was a big Ford fan

even when Mayock was bashing him. I didn’t understand the problem. Turned out to be a good player. Would be better if he had more chances and if he were healthy.

by Ewdtrey on Jan 18, 2012 4:53 PM EST up reply actions

Same with Wylie. 2011 was his first full season.

He supposedly clocked in the 4.2s before he got injured in 2010.

Actually, there’s a lot of short speedsters at Fresno State. Sophomore Jalen Saunders probably vultured some catches from Wylie this year. He averaged a crazy 23.1 yards per catch.

Its understandable

Ford looked more like a track athlete than a football player early on

I couldn't care less about his brother

if he is a good player, let’s look to bring him in. From what i quickly looked up about him he might be starter material and could be had in 4th round or so. not bad at all.

I know the Jags 1st round pick already

His name is Luke Kuechly LB from Boston College. he is regarded as the best LB in the draft, fits the 4-3 scheme as a will or Mike. Jags have 4 good LB but BAP is in effect and he may be outstanding in the pros. I wouldnt mind that depending on how free agency goes. He is a Gene Smith type of guy. Good Ol Boy from Ohio.

by childintime12 on Jan 18, 2012 9:00 PM EST reply actions

When session was healthy

He played very little. Coleman was the 11th starter on our team, not session. I dont see us drafting a guy, on defense, at a non premium position, that would force smith or poz to lose time. Nothing wrong with getting a backer later or a depth guy in FA, but bap or not i dont think gene even wasted his time scouting this guy, given the situation.

by Mr.Awesome on Jan 18, 2012 9:11 PM EST up reply actions

I agree 100%

Im just saying this guy fits the title of leader, character and talent. If he is another POZ then why not grab him? Session has proved a injury concern. D. SMith may be able to play forever but he is 30. Were an injury away from being very thin at LB. Not to mention any LB we had other then the 4 were worthless. He impacts special teams and becomes a starter with an injury or a couple years down the road. I see the Jags getting stuck in a root with that 7th pick. Coples is scary and Kirkpatric has baggage. Mcshay and Kiper have Kuechly ranked 10th best prospect.

by childintime12 on Jan 18, 2012 9:30 PM EST up reply actions

I just trust BAP and he may be that

We all questioned Alualu a little and our friends made fun of us on draft day but he is a solid player and probably the best DT from that draft.

by childintime12 on Jan 18, 2012 9:37 PM EST up reply actions

I am a BC SUPERFAN - I dont miss a snap, and Kuechly is a machine. Best LB by far.

I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE for him to be a Jaguar.
That said, I want the Jaguars to fill a lot of holes this offseason…and I am not sure LB is the most pressing.

Here are the needs

Starters at WR, RT, DE, CB. Thats it. Those can be fixed in free agency. That said the depth is needed at S, LB, WR, TE, and QB. Thats it.

by childintime12 on Jan 18, 2012 9:53 PM EST up reply actions

I understand what youre point is

But you dont draft a linebacker at 7th overall to start in a few years and play some special teams. You can do the same thing with a guy in the second or third rounds. Poz has 5 more years. The only way i see it happening is if we dont resign or plan to resign smith.

Fortunately, we operate on a two backer system a lot, so thin as we maybe it could be easy to hide in the event of an injury.

Ive been beating the reiff drum since the season ended, and with kirkpatrick getting arrested, i think its more likely now than ever if we stay at 7. Reiff is a top 10 talent as well, and could be probowl quality as a RT, a position we do happen to need. In the event of injury to monroe, reiff should be able to slide over without issues, and continue to provide quality protection. add carl nicks to that, and we may have the best o line in football.

Melvin Ingram is a guy that may grow on me

His spin move looked like Dwight Freeney. He is 6’2 250lbs. He sometimes lined up over the guard and used a spin move to throw the guy around. He consistently used the spin move when i watched his highlights. It was quick yet disruptive as he moved forward while doing it. A good spin move reminds me of how an alligator does the twist of death or whatever.
