Jaguars Hire Tony Oden As Defensive Backs Coach, Report Says

The Jacksonville Jaguars have finally filled out their defensive staff today, according to a report by Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times-Union. The Jaguars will hire former New Orleans Saints defensive backs coach Tony Oden.

Oden was promoted as the Saints defensive backs coach prior to the 2011 NFL season. Prior to that, Oden had worked as the Saints assistant defensive backs coach for five seasons. Prior to that he worked as the assistant defensive backs for the Houston Texans and had stints at the college level with Eastern Michigan, East Carolina, and Boston College working with defensive backs.

While Oden was with the Saints, they allowed the least amount passing touchdowns in the NFL since 2009. The Saints also have the most interception return yardage and the most interceptions returned for a touchdown since 2009.

I wish...

the new QB coach would be announced soon. My anticipaction for it is through the roof.

you know who I want in there

Kerwin Bell with Jim Zorn a close second

But, my guess is Sam Wyche.

Also heard the name Sylvester Croom for a position with the team. I think that’d be a hell of a hire.

Croom interviewed on tuesday

I love how Alfie didn’t post anything. I found out through the rams site.

I think that’d be a hell of a hire.

Why?

there's a lot of misinformation out there, I wouldn't just post everything under the sun unless I could first verify it

A good way to lose credibility.

I like Croom a lot. He’s a coaching lifer, coached at Green Bay played at Bama, HC at Mississippi State after Jackie Sherrill pretty much killed the program and his teams though short on talen, brought it week in week out.

Would Croom be the running backs coach since that where he has the most experience coaching, or offensive line since he was an All-American center

Now I need..

some background info on Greg Olson. Anyone?

by kjones407 on Jan 19, 2012 5:06 PM EST up reply actions

Per Jaguars Insider...

Olson has worked with Josh Freeman in Tampa Bay, Marc Bulger in St. Louis, Jeff Garcia in San Francisco and Drew Brees at Purdue.

It said...

the same thing GRSJags said above. While I’m not entirely impressed with his track record, it did bring a question to mind. What was the reason behind’s Josh Freeman’s regression last year and what role did Olsen play in it? As there is no way to really know the answer to that question, I’ll just take the hire in good faith for now.

Fantastic hire

He got a raw deal after they decided to get rid of Morris’ entire staff. Very impressed by this hire. More so than the Bratkowski hire.

given his limited track record, what about this hire is so great in your mind? Maybe you know more than me on this guy and would share your insight?

Joe we all know you want Bell lol

he would be a good hire, according to my sources he’s interviewing to be Auburn’s offensive coordinator.

I'm only familiar...

with Jim Zorn of the people you named. I’d be ecstatic with that hire. I always he heard he’s touted as a QB guru and that’s exactly what Blaine needs.

by kjones407 on Jan 19, 2012 4:40 PM EST up reply actions

Another good hire

If I recall, I always thought the Saints DB’s were aggressive play makers. Jumping routes, creating a lot of turnovers. Tracy Porter, Darren Sharper, etc. This sounds like a coach that could help force some turnovers in the secondary.

Yes… also worth mentioning, Jabari Greer. They’ve had a nice secondary for a while.

by jagzman04 on Jan 19, 2012 4:15 PM EST up reply actions

Just what the doctor ordered.

I was impressed with the improved coverage displayed last season by the secondary but we’ve been missing that big play element from them for a while now.

by kjones407 on Jan 19, 2012 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

I wonder...

With the delay in hiring some offensive positions… if they are coaches on any of the remaining playoff teams?

by GRSJags on Jan 19, 2012 3:45 PM EST reply actions

Good question.

After thinking about it, there’s only three that stand out in my mind based off of the players on the teams that are left. The QB coach from the Giants because of what Eli has been doing, the TE coaches from the 49ers and the Patriots because of V. Davis of the Niners and Gronkowski and Hernandez and the offensive line coach of the Patriots because they always seem to have one of the best offensive lines in the league at pass protection (our o-line’s weakness). Oh, and maybe the WR coach of the Giants with the success of Hakeem Nicks and breaking out party that Victor Cruz has had. I’m not sure if that’s how they go about their coaching search but it’s not totally illogical to think that, that could be part of the process.

by kjones407 on Jan 19, 2012 4:37 PM EST up reply actions

A well thought out decision

Seems like he’ll improve an already solid secondary, I like this hire.

ha!

I told a bunch of people he wasn’t gonna be around. Most of them defended him, for some reason, with the “well, gee, there wasn’t an off-season to work out.” Which is a horrible, horrible excuse. Or i got “Injuries happen. it’s football.” ok, so no crap, sherlock, but when you lose nearly half a team to IR, the axe will fall (and this time it ain’t in the locker room to “keep chopping wood”!!)
